Sigh, another family annihilator. The only surprises here are the choice of weapon and the age of the perpetrator—the daughter was just 35 and the wife was 70, so he must’ve been a pretty fit 81-year old to attack and kill them both with apparently little resistance.

Having read more, I’m even more horrified that he subsequently dismembered the bodies of his wife and daughter with a saw, placed the body parts in NEW trashcans (purchased for this specific reason, along with the axe and saw) AND then he called the cops to try to make it seem like they’d been victims of an unknown assailant.

He seems to have had little concern for himself about the “miserable” life that he’d face when evicted from their home, but thought the prospect of his wife and daughter being homeless was awful enough to warrant brutally murdering and dismembering them?! I, for one, am not buying his story. I think he wanted them out of his life for selfish reasons, not to spare them the “indignity“ of being homeless.

Also, was he the only working person in the home? No Social Security or disability income? Just seems a pretty drastic thing to go from being fired from his job to “better kill my wife and daughter” (unless the women assumed the family had savings which RM had squandered, or perhaps they had been told that RM earned more income than he actually did?).

*Return Filing of Charges Hearing (@ 10:30am MT) - CO - Bethany Maclaren (70) wife & Ruth Jennifer Maclaren (35) daughter found after 911 call by Maclaren in living room with substantial injuries & no signs of life, Mar. 25, 2023 Englewood. *Reginald Livingstone Maclaren (81) arrested (3/25/23) with 2 counts of 1st degree murder willful/family/weapon. Held without bond. Confessed to detectives.
Maclaren called police just after 6 p.m. Saturday (3/24/23) to report his wife & adult daughter had been murdered, according to a police press release. He said he believed he knew the suspect & that they had used a hammer. Officers responded to Maclaren’s apartment, where they found two victims in large trash cans in the living room & kitchen area. Both victims had substantial injuries & showed no signs of life. The victims were identified in an arrest affidavit as 70-year-old Bethany Maclaren & 35-year-old Ruth Jennifer Maclaren. Police say investigators determined both victims were killed with an ax & one of them was dismembered with a saw. Detectives established probable cause to arrest Maclaren on first-degree murder charges. Div. Chief of Investigations for Englewood PD Tracy Jones said the 81-year-old eventually confessed after speaking with detectives. Maclaren told detectives he killed his family because he lost his job, had no money left for rent & did not want them to be homeless, according to the arrest affidavit. Maclaren will have an advisement court hearing this week in the Arapahoe County District Court.
3/20/23 Update: Return filing of charges hearing on 4/3/23.

On the link to Charges & Bonds - it is not coming up for me. So he is being held without bond - did he plead not guilty at his hearing yesterday? I am just coming up with articles from 6 days ago.

I do see he has a preliminary hearing set - so he must have plead not guilty -?

TIA! :)

When Reginald Maclaren allegedly confessed to the March 25 ax murders of his wife and daughter in their Englewood apartment, police body camera footage shows him saying he killed the two women because the family was facing financial issues and he didn’t want them to “end up on the streets begging for food.”

But documents presented by the defense in his preliminary hearing Wednesday undermine that assertion for a motive, showing that the family had paid their rent for March; they had placed a deposit on a new apartment; Maclaren had recently purchased a car; and his wife had between $80,000 and $90,000 in savings.

The body camera footage also shows Maclaren saying his daughter had cerebral palsy, and an autopsy report stated his daughter died from 23 "chop wounds."
[.....]
At Wednesday's hearing, his bond was set at $2 million cash or surety, and his arraignment was set for Sept. 5.

During the hearing, the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office presented evidence to convince Arapahoe County Chief Judge Michelle Amico to go forward with the charges against Maclaren.

Attorneys from the DA’s office played the 911 call Maclaren made to law enforcement where he initially claimed he found his wife and daughter murdered in their apartment on March 25 and, when asked by the 911 operator, alleged that nephews in his family potentially harmed the two women.

The prosecution also took testimony from Englewood Police Detectives Brian Taylor and Brant Vogle, who both recounted the steps they took to aqquire certain pieces of evidence in their investigation.
