Man police say led biker gang, allowed 2015 killing of Pierce woman, will go to trial

An autumn trial date is set for a Nunn man police and prosecutors say led an improvised biker gang and allowed the 2013 killing of a Pierce woman.

Thomas Vassil, 57, appeared in court by video from the Weld County Jail on Friday afternoon. He is charged with first-degree murder after deliberation because police and prosecutors say he allowed a small, ad hoc biker gang to kill Tera Lewandowski, 34, after she got in a fight with someone close to the gang. He pleaded not guilty to that charge Friday.

A sixth person involved in a biker gang that killed a Colorado woman and dumped her body in Wyoming was sentenced Monday to 60 years in prison for his involvement in the woman’s death.

Michael Vassil pleaded guilty in early May to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder charges in the September 2015 murder of Tera Lewandowski.

Prosecutors always contended Vassil was one of the plot's key architects, along with Meyer. But Jerrica Phillips, one of the case's prosecutors, said Monday morning that until witness testimony in Daniel Meyer's six-day trial in May, prosecutors didn't know how involved Vassil was in pushing his fellow conspirators to see the killing through.

"This isn't fair," Phillips said of the 60-year plea agreement. "I think the only fair resolution is a life sentence for what he did."

Still, she said, this was the plea agreement attorneys reached, and she asked Weld District Court Judge Timothy Kerns to approve it.

Final person sentenced in connection with 2015 killing by improvised Pierce biker gang

The final scene in the story of Tera Lewandowski's 2015 murder played itself out Monday afternoon in a brief sentencing hearing for the man who led the improvised Nunn-based motorcycle gang responsible for her death.

Thomas Vassil, 58, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. He did so, his attorney Stephanie Bowen said, not because he believed all the evidence against him, but to take advantage of the plea agreement offered by the Weld District Attorney's Office.

Last of biker gang members sentenced in murder of Weld County woman

“It brings to an end one of the most senseless crimes I’ve dealt with as a prosecutor in Weld County,” assistant district attorney Robb Miller said in a news release. “Ms. Lewandowski was murdered for no apparent reason. Her body was hidden in the snowy hills of Wyoming for several months and left in an open, cold grave. We believe justice would be served by this sentence.”

“The murder of Tera Lewandowski will remain with us forever. The sheer hate and disregard these defendants had for human life is shocking and appalling,” said District Attorney Michael Rourke. “We hope these large sentences give some sort of closure to the victim’s family and law enforcement who tirelessly investigated and prosecuted this case.”
