The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.

There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.

New Chinese virus 'will have infected hundreds'

Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.

Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.

But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Experts say the fact three Chinese tourists have tested positive for the virus outside Wuhan indicates the disease toll may be higher than reported.

Headlines in Australia this morning, Monday 2nd March.

Virus spreads to 33 nations in nine days
Coronavirus cases surged in Italy, and France closed the Louvre Museum on Sunday as the deadly outbreak that began in China sent fear rising across Western Europe.

The number of countries hit by the virus climbed past 60, and the death toll worldwide reached at least 3000.

Thirty-three nations have reported cases in the past nine days.

New fronts in the crisis opened rapidly over the weekend, deepening the sense of crisis that has already sent financial markets plummeting, emptied the streets in many cities of tourists and workers and rewritten the daily routines of millions of people.

I'm afraid that people might become overly anxious and stressed if they're going about their lives and start to see many people wearing masks. I get a very uncomfortable feeling when I see media reports from China with practically everyone wearing a mask, and this was long before we were even aware of the COVID-19 outbreak. Here in the United States, we're not accustomed to seeing people out and about wearing protective masks, and I'm afraid that it could cause undue panic. Until we're instructed by government and/or medical personnel to wear protective masks when out in public, it's probably best to follow current directives.

Surgeon General Urges the Public to Stop Buying Face Masks

At this point I don’t care how it makes people feel, frankly. I have asthma. But I have to go out in public. I’m wearing a mask. I’m hedging my bets.

Found this article. Surgeon general says to general public to stop buying masks. Masks are not effective for general public, but they are needed for health workers. Well, if they don't work, why do health workers even need them? It doesn't add up, does it? Either they work or they don't. How about making more masks?
"Seriously people - STOP BUYING MASKS!" Surgeon General Jerome Adams tweeted. "They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!"
Coronavirus: Face masks won't stop outbreak, surgeon general says
The protection of the masks are shortlived, at hospitals they are single-use, for short periods of time (perhaps 5 - 10 minutes) and are changed between each patient. How many ordinary people walking around with masks all day will change their masks every 10 minutes, or as soon as they get moist by the breath? I would guess very few, and virus likes moisture and warmth, like under a moist mask.

A Dublin school with 400 pupils is to close for two weeks after one of its students was confirmed as having the coronavirus.

The teenager, who is the first person in the Republic to test positive for the virus, became ill in recent days after returning from Italy and is in isolation in (a) Dublin hospital.

...

The team announced the first confirmed case of the virus in the Republic of Ireland on Saturday night. Another case was confirmed in a patient in Northern Ireland earlier this week. That woman had also travelled from Italy and passed through Dublin airport. The Dublin-Belfast train was later sanitised as a precautionary measure as it was believed the woman travelled home on it.

CORONAVIRUS: THREE MORE TEST POSITIVE; DUTCH HOSPITAL CLOSED AFTER TREATING INTENSIVE CARE PATIENT

Three more people in the Netherlands were diagnosed with the Covid-19 strain of coronavirus on Sunday, the health agency RIVM announced at a press conference. The statement was made amid reports that the Beatrixziekenhuis, a hospital in Gorinchem, was closed to new patients on Friday, and those people who were already inside the facility were ordered to stay inside.

"Of these three patients, it is not yet known how they became infected," the RIVM said in a statement it issued to the public.

"On the basis of this information, we will also adjust the public advisory. If there are minor airway complaints, we advise people to stay at home, to determine if the symptoms become more serious and to contact the general physician if necessary," said Healthcare Minister Bruno Bruins. The advise is mainly for people who have either traveled to an area where coronavirus is more common, or those who have been in contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus, including roommates.

It brings the total number of known cases in the Netherlands to 10. The patients revealed to the public at the Sunday press event concerns a woman from Gorinchem, Zuid-Holland, a man from Coevorden, Drenthe and a woman from Tilburg, Noord-Brabant.

The patient at the Gorinchem hospital had been in intensive care there from February 21 through Friday. The patient was taken to the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam on Saturday, where they were tested for coronavirus, a test which came back positive.

All patients at the Gorinchem hospital will remain there under a temporary quarantine. The Beatrixziekenhuis is not accepting new patients or visitors. Staff members are allowed to leave the hospitals at the end of their shifts and return home, confirmed the RIVM.

Good morning to all. Prostitutes, candy sheds, and now tater tots......I like this thread......:)....Where is the hot coffee ?................moo
For me, it's trail-mix. Bought several bags during my early stocking-up. Thought they might come in handy in a few weeks when I start running out of other rations. I've gone through nearly the entire trail-mix supply and am afraid I'll go through withdrawal. Still have a pantry, fridge and freezer of healthy rations though. This virus is going to create another 12-step group!!!!!

Just an observation....this virus started in a country where it's common for people in the public to wear masks. Might not be the best thing to assume the masks are effective in prevention, ykwim? There are thousands of cases in places where masks are common. Just saying.

FWIW, I have relatives who travel to China - and they wore masks when there because the pollution is horrible. The air is thick with pollution. Some of the masks we've been seeing over the years might be because of that.

It's also considered polite in Asian cultures (I've been told) to wear a mask when you yourself are sick.

Americans look at pictures of Chinese wearing masks and take that as an example to follow, but ignore experts in our own country advising our own people not to buy masks if healthy.

I guess you pick who you trust....some random photo of people you don't know or established medical experts in your own nation (who I assume care about our country's welfare).

justmyopinion

Yeah I’m not trusting a random photo. The WHO has made clear that healthy people taking care of someone with the virus SHOULD wear a mask and that masks must be combined with hand washing to be effective. That indicates to me that the masks prevent transmission from aerosol.

I’m tired of people coughing without covering their mouths. But I have no choice but to be in public for my work. So a mask can help me.

P.S. the virus started in a country where people eat exotic animals from unhygienic animal markets.

Please don’t react like you are. You are a responsible poster. NO, we are not on our own.

MOO

:) What I mean is that we can’t just sit back and rely on others (those in charge) to tell us what to do to take care of ourselves in a timely way. That’s why I’m here...so I can be proactive and not have to scramble at the last minute. :)

I forgot to mention that the only reason I can think of for those workers to be unprotected from the patient they were wheeling out is that they had already been exposed so at that point it didn’t matter. I can understand that, but it wasn’t a good visual, especially after seeing photos of a British family escorted to ambulances by emergency workers in hazmat suits!
