I just want to let you know that I live in St Charles County, MO. People are so careless here about wearing masks it's disgusting! I will only homeschool my son because of this. We both have immune disorders and my spouse works at Amazon, where people are constantly being diagnosed with COVID19. I don't know what it will take for anyone to take this serious?! Almost 250,000 people in our country die in 8-9 months and people still think it's no big deal?!!!

I think people who don't care now won't understand the true weight of their carelessness until decades later when we all see the cumulative effect in history books. Thank you for being a voice of reason.

The problem here is that people are getting "Covid Fatigue". Cleaning, mask wearing, washing, on and on...and the ongoing "Social Distancing". It just wears on every one.

Which is why we got over 500 cases today. And the people at a county health department quit en masse last week.

Four-Member Staff of Montana County Health Agency Resigns

I have Covid fatigue and I'm staying inside because when I do go out, I find myself being tempted to ignore safety measures. Especially with family - I automatically go in for that hug.

Sheesh. The feedback I got from a poll of 10 surrounding neighborhoods on NextDoor regarding reasons for not wearing a mask?

Number one reason? It’s a hoax.
It’s not real. I’m not tripping over dead bodies in the street. No one I know has had it or died.

Runner up reason? No one can tell me what to do and take away my freedom.

I gave up posting after a verbal online onslaught from my neighborhood about how I was stupid to wear a mask, you’re old, stay home since you’re afraid, and the local mask b*~ch.

Fun times in the neighborhood.

I'm kinda experiencing the same on my local neighbourhood FB page.

Please, everyone here get a pulse oximeter. Perhaps buy one for a friend. Pretty please as it would make some of us feel better that you have one. This "stay at home" until you are sick enough to be in the hospital....we know it just doesn't cut it as a large percentage who were 90% or less had no idea. Reports come in of people that were in low 80's and high 70's saying they didn't realize they were low nor having that much problems breathing.

This is exactly what happened to a family member of a friend of mine. Woman in her 50s, had pneumonia previously - tested positive last week - they had been very, very careful but husband got it via work...she had a sudden and rapid drop in oxygen to 80s. She is currently in the hospital and doing better, however now their son who lives with them and has some underlying conditions has a fever so they’re watching it carefully.

As my dear mum would say "You (they) can bury their heads in the sand, it is not going to make the problem go away".

Happy to see you both are really earning your reputations. :D

Knowing myself, if it was me, I would probably keep on putting up a post a day about wearing a mask and ignore the bullying behaviour that came back at me. They can always block me, if they don't like it.

Covid-19 Live Updates: U.S. Surpasses 10 Million Cases as Biden Assembles Task Force

“The United States reported its 10 millionth coronavirus case on Sunday, with the latest million added in just 10 days, as most of the country struggled to contain outbreaks in the third and most widespread wave of infection since the pandemic began.

Case reports have soared in the last week, shattering records. The seven-day average of new cases now exceeds 100,000 per day, far more than any other country. The United States accounts for about one-fifth of all reported coronavirus cases in the world, a total that is nearing 50 million. In Europe, which accounts for as much or more of the global number, many countries have imposed national or regional restrictions far more encompassing than the limits in force in patches of the United States.“

Hard to get your head around, isn't it? A million cases in 10 days! And, what, about 10,000 people dying in those same 10 days? How far can this escalate? I can see why Dr Fauci and the presidential-elect team are so concerned.

Right, and this is really a global phenomenon. Fortunately, we are still doing well with masking and distancing in my neck of the woods (based on what I see, anyway), though the numbers are going up sharply...

Are you sure about this, with Covid?

Repurposing the mucolytic cough suppressant and TMPRSS2 protease inhibitor bromhexine for the prevention and management of SARS-CoV-2 infection

The decision to put a person on a cough suppressant is a doctor's decision, IMO. There is no blanket advice.

At any rate, no one should trust internet strangers on this - that's why choosing and consulting with a concerned and educated primary care physician is so important.

The OP commented that her daughter was diagnosed with covid and wasn’t offered cough syrup. I made a couple of assumptions, hopefully correct ones: one, that she was diagnosed by a doctor, that the doctor indeed did not prescribe cough syrup after reviewing her medical history and examining her, and that said physician is competent. If any of my assumptions are incorrect, and they may well be, then my response would be different. It seemed to me that a physician, hopefully a competent one (or the OP has much larger issues at hand than cough syrup), had already determined that cough syrup wasn’t warranted in her particular situation.

There was also some evidence early on that the most common cough suppressant ingredient actually caused covid to replicate faster. It’s been many months wine I’ve read those articles, so perhaps that has changed with further research.

Thankfully, I have a team of world renowned physicians that I trust implicitly with my health care and that of my children. We used an inhaler, antibiotic, and steroid for my 19 year old daughter when she was covid positive. This would almost assuredly be the approach we would take with any of my other 3 children, as well as myself. But this is based on our own medical histories and our physician preferences based on their experiences and knowledge.

With Murthy, Nunez-Smith, and Kessler, Biden leans on experience to steer Covid-19 task force

“A top Biden aide on Sunday announced the two co-chairs of the incoming administration’s task force: Vivek Murthy, the former U.S. surgeon general, and David Kessler, the former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. Though the Biden campaign did not formally announce her inclusion on Sunday, Marcella Nunez-Smith, a Yale physician and professor whose research focuses on health disparities, is widely expected to serve as the task force’s third co-chair.”

This is very reassuring.

The decision to put a person on a cough suppressant is a doctor's decision, IMO. There is no blanket advice. There is no way to cough coronavirus out of your lungs once it's there, and there are doctors who believe the irritation to the lungs from coughing is beneficial to the spread of the virus within the body - and so they order cough suppressants. This is especially true early on in the illness. University of Maryland Medical has a recommendation to use cough suppressant for Covid up on its website. Personally, I would use it and while I have heard this advice about coughs being good for the process of disease, I am a strong doubter.

Medicines that fight COVID-19: What to know

Same thing with the fever (which can use up precious somatic energy, especially if the person is experiencing chills, which can happen with fever as it approaches 100°. Again, my doctor has said for us (DH and I) to use tylenol if we have even a mild fever. She's UCLA-based. She's not alone in this advice. (See the link just above - where the medical news aggregator reviewed the literature and says Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is a front line medication for Covid-19, especially when there are chills and fever.

The idea that we are supposed to let fever rage out of control as it "helps kill" viruses is not true in Covid-19 and it may be the opposite. At any rate, no one should trust internet strangers on this - that's why choosing and consulting with a concerned and educated primary care physician is so important. My colleagues and I all have different doctors, and we compare notes on what they've been telling us daily.

But tylenol and cough suppressant are in my coronavirus toolkit, hopefully won't have to use either. I too used to believe in this "no suppressant for coughs" business and when I told my doctor that on my first visit, she just stared at me. She said it wasn't the front line thing to do for my cough (allergies) and prescribed a new allergy med for my nose (worked, no more cough) but she was very concerned that my respiratory tract was constantly irritated and I think I can see why.

Here's a website that offers methods for cough treatment aside from suppressants:

How to Treat a Cough from Coronavirus at Home

(Humidity not only treats the cough but also helps bring virions to the ground, thereby reducing viral load in the area; zinc lozenges at the first hint of a sore throat/cough are also beneficial). My colleague's physician said humidifier would be a reasonable first line of defense in their household (with an immune-compromised person and 2 kids).

And here's a good, balanced summary regarding the "suppress" vs "let it ride" fever debate:

Fever: suppress or let it ride?

The article cites a study in which tylenol had no effect on eventual mortality in hospital-based virus treatment (2015, so not the current coronavirus) but did keep people out of the ICU for a longer period of time. The jury is still out on whether fever is adaptive or maladaptive and probably depends on the specific pathogen to some degree.

At my age, with pre-existing inflammatory conditions, my doctor says to go ahead and take it if fever is approaching 100°. Your doctor may say differently, depending on age and other variables.

Add Pedialyte and Immodium to your kit. Folks say they have diarrhea as a nice little side effect. Right after losing sense of taste/smell, sore throat, headache, fever, fatigue, and coughing.

Vaccine Transporters Feel Unprepared For The Distributive Effort Ahead

They need to keep this vaccine at sub zero temperatures. -15-70 Celsius. Good luck with that.

The article you linked makes important cautionary points about widespread distribution. This episode of 6o Minutes tonight about the gargantuan task of distributing the vaccine overseen by an army general is well worth watching. There are so many moving parts, so we shall see how it works out. But they seem to have the bases covered for the initial distribution at least, so I was somewhat encouraged.

I thought that it was interesting that the military seems to be way in front of the logistics on the process regarding how to manage the distribution of the vaccine.

We have not heard from the pentagon regarding Covid and military readiness. Probably a security issue. But it seems like they have a plan to ensure this vaccine will get where it needs to go, with the correct temperature. And the follow up dose as well.

Looks like a good team from the "60 Minutes" segment. And I am glad that the military is in charge of this. Nothing made people feel more assured than when General Honore took charge in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He was remarkable. Everyone up to that point seemed to be dithering in a cluster. Then, he landed, and dang, action started.
