Excessive Sneezing! That's a new one.

The signs you have the Delta variant are different than original COVID-19

The Delta variant may look and act very similar to the original strain of COVID-19, but doctors have noticed some differences.

Fever and cough are present in both types, but headaches, sinus congestion, sore throats and runny noses all appear to be more common with the Delta strain. Excessive sneezing is also a symptom.

Loss of taste and smell, considered a hallmark symptom of the original virus, may happen less frequently.
Yes! We have several friends that were vaccinated who were convinced it was a cold or “just allergies” and found out it was Covid. I’m glad we insisted on them staying home and not visiting!

The Delta variant was first identified in the United States in April and by May it was well onto its exponential growth curve, doubling every 10-12 days, as the basis for Covid infections, now reaching over 96% prevalence. Ironically, on 1 May, the CDC announced it would stop monitoring post-vaccination breakthrough infections unless they led to hospitalizations or deaths. This decision can be seen as exceptionally ill-advised and has led to a country flying blind in its attempt to confront its fourth wave of infections – one that has rapidly led to well over 100,000 new cases per day and more than 60,000 hospitalizations, both higher than the US first and second pandemic waves. It is unfathomable that we do not know how many of these are occurring in people who were vaccinated.

Most people who get Covid infections after being fully vaccinated have mild to moderate symptoms, and generally have been thought to avoid hospitalizations. But that sense of confidence about vaccine protection was built upon the pre-Delta data when the CDC was monitoring breakthroughs. Still being reported by CDC, from their latest website data, and a constant refrain from public health officials, is that “99.99% of people fully vaccinated against Covid-19 have not had a breakthrough case resulting in hospitalization or death.” That could not be further from the truth. In the July Provincetown Delta outbreaks that the CDC reported on the risk of fully vaccinated requiring hospitalization was 1%, not .01%, and that may not be a reliable estimate for the incidence of such infections occurring throughout the country.

Without tracking, we have no idea of the proportion of people fully vaccinated who are getting ill, hospitalized, or dying. There is no question the frequency of requiring hospitalization is increasing, as reflected by data from some counties that are tracking breakthroughs on their own and reporting that 10 to 20% of admissions are in vaccinated individuals. But we have no denominator.

The Delta variant of the coronavirus is fueling an ongoing COVID wave, but Florida’s health experts now are keeping a wary eye on another variant that has surfaced in the state: Delta Plus.

The Florida Department of Health has detected 18 cases of a Delta Plus mutation, according to their latest statistics. It is not the dominant strain in the state but has been found in at least three people who have been hospitalized.

American researchers say it’s too soon to know if this new mutation is worse than Delta yet in terms of spreading faster and making people sicker. Delta Plus has a spike protein mutation called K417N, and appears in two lineages reported in Florida. Five of the Delta Plus cases are in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.

“Delta Plus is worth following but still remains a small fraction of overall cases,” said Dr. David Andrews, associate professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, who is leading the University’s effort to sequence COVID-19 positive samples. “It does not yet appear to be more contagious than Delta, but we have to keep an eye on it.”

As new cases soar in the state, It’s not clear how many positive specimens are being sampled to determine the prevalence of the variants. Florida has reported results for only 30,708 samples dating back to March.

As Florida hospitals fill, doctors have expressed concern that more COVID mutations will continue to arise until vaccination rates increase.

In South Florida, researchers are keeping a close eye on another variant widespread in Colombia, a lineage currently known as b.1.621. “We are seeing a low level of cases in each sequencing run,” Andrews said. “ We are uniquely positioned to be a place that if it is going to expand, we will see it here first.”

Alarming 94K surge in COVID-19 cases among kids, hospitals overwhelmed

Some experts are urging the FDA to authorize vaccines for 5-11 year-olds

In a newly released weekly report, which compiles state-by-state data on COVID-19 cases among children, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Children's Hospital Association (CHA) found that nearly 94,000 new child COVID-19 cases were reported last week, a continued "substantial" increase.

Some of the worst numbers are in Louisiana and Florida but could get worse elsewhere fast as public health officials express concerns with the highly contagious delta variant amid continued vaccine hesitancy.

"This is not your grandfather's COVID," Dr. Mark Kline, the physician in chief of Children's Hospital New Orleans told ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday. Louisiana is facing the nation's highest rate of new COVID-19 cases with the Children's Hospital in New Orleans describing what they're seeing as "an epidemic of very young children."

"We are hospitalizing record numbers of children," Kline continued. "Half of the children in our hospital today are under two years of age. Most of the others are between five and ten years of age -- too young to be vaccinated just yet."

Their body, their choice-then why show up in the hospital once they get covid? They are overwhelming the hospital systems. They should stay home once they catch it.

I have been carefully watching the Covid stats in my city. We were at almost zero, mid July. Then, there was a large community event, outdoor concert and fireworks.

The Covid rate has been literally quantified daily since the end of July. It was definitely a "super spreader" event. All outside. No masks.

It's terrible that children are suffering from Covid and long Covid. I'd like to think unvaxxed parents of these children would finally have their eyes opened to the concept of prevention through vaccination. But maybe that's too much to hope for. :(
ETA: I do hope children under 12 will be able to be vaccinated soon, of course. But will antivax parents refuse to let them be vaccinated?

Sky News Australia deletes dozens of videos promoting unproven Covid treatments

Sky News Australia has quietly deleted at least 31 videos that question the public health response to Covid-19 or promote unproven treatments as the broadcaster prepares for its chief executive, Paul Whittaker, to appear at a Senate inquiry on Friday, Guardian Australia can reveal.

Sky News will face the media diversity inquiry after the broadcaster was suspended from Youtube for seven days for posting 21 videos that violated the platform’s Covid medical misinformation policies.

Judges order people with mental health issues to take medications that are prescribed to prevent these individuals from harming themselves or others. Covid vaccine protects individual and others.

Don't they also order chemical castration meds for child sex offenders in some cases? If they ever want to be let out of prison.

So why not be able to order a reckless, irresponsible person to have covid vaccinations?
Some things are just smart judicial responses. imo

Seriously? I just really don't understand the drama. It is a shot. Get it, move on. It is really is selfish, at this point.
'My body, my choice, no vaccine, no mask'

That's perfectly fine with me under one condition: As long as they can guarantee and duly promise me that they will not spew out a bucketful of Delta virus to their patients, their children, and to any of us. I never knew until the pandemic that this much selfish people existed among us. Very sad about that.

Moderna’s vaccine may be best against Delta

The mRNA vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech may be less effective than Moderna’s against the delta variant of the coronavirus, according to two reports posted on medRxiv on Sunday ahead of peer review.

In a study of more than 50,000 patients in the Mayo Clinic Health System, researchers found the effectiveness of Moderna’s vaccine against infection had dropped to 76% in July - when the delta variant was predominant - from 86% in early 2021.

Over the same period, the effectiveness of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine had fallen to 42% from 76%, researchers said.

While both vaccines remain effective at preventing Covid hospitalization, a Moderna booster shot may be necessary soon for anyone who got the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines earlier this year, said Dr. Venky Soundararajan of Massachusetts data analytics company nference, who led the Mayo study.

Knowing that children are being infected at much higher rates with the Delta variant, how can we possibly advocate sending them--unvaccinated--back to schools?
