Details of Disappearance

Crawford's mother's then-boyfriend, Ronald Garrett, was watching Crawford in her family's residence in the P. T. Barnum Housing Project in Bridgeport, Connecticut on June 5, 1981. Garrett told investigators that an unidentified boy arrived at the home at 10:20 a.m. and told Garrett that Crawford's grandparents had sent him to retrieve the child. Garrett described the boy as 10 or 11 years old, African-American, with little braids in his hair. He stated he thought he recognized the boy as a neighborhood. Garrett said he permitted the boy to take Crawford. She has never been seen again.

Garrett was convicted of risk of injury to a minor and sentenced to one year in prison for giving Crawford to the boy. Crawford's grandparents and great-grandparents occasionally baby-sat her in 1981, but they never sent any person to pick her up that day in 1981. Garrett has refused to change his story and maintains he had nothing to do with the young girl's disappearance.

Bridgeport police ask help from public in solving missing child case

The Bridgeport Police Department is seeking information concerning the disappearance of Jovonna Stacey Crawford, who was born Aug. 29, 1979.

Jovonna was reported missing on June 5, 1981 from P.T. Barnum Housing Complex, 85 Taylor Drive, Building 8, Apartment 208, by her mother, Mary Crawford. Jovonna was 21 months old at the time of her disappearance. This is the 30th anniversary of her disappearance, and Jovonna would be 32 years old this year. She was wearing a blue and white jumpsuit when she was last seen.

There is no evidence the “boy” actually exists and Jovonna was actually handed over to him by Garrett. Garrett maintains his story and disavows any responsibility in the disappearance of Jovonna. Garrett was arrested by warrant on June 9, 1981 by Bridgeport Police Detectives and charged with risk of injury to a minor, a felony. Garrett received a one year sentence.

Wow! I definitely see the resemblance. I wonder how they’d do a comparison in this case? Jovanna shows to have DNA available but none for the UID. And they weren’t able to locate her grave in 2018.

On one hand, it is suspect that the boyfriend made up the story to cover up something bad. On the other hand, it reminds me of Christopher Dansby and Shane Walker cases in NYC in the late 80s. Two different days, toddlers on the playground being watched by mother. An older boy and girl show up and play with the toddler. Toddler vanishes.
