CT - Kevin Jiang, 26, Yale grad student, fatally shot off campus, New Haven, 6 Feb 2021 *ARREST*

Note (BBM): suspects first name spelled both Quinxuan and Qinxuan in the news. MIT released a statement spelling it Qinxuan so I take it that is the correct spelling:

As a side note, it is probably just a previously used spelling.

Chinese words, including names, are phonetically translated into English. Pronunciation of the same Chinese name can vary from Mandarin to Cantonese and other languages. Pronunciations can then vary further with regional dialects and accents.

As a result, while some spellings of Chinese names in English maybe more common, there can be many correct spellings of the same name.

Going deeper into Chinese spellings....

The Chinese government did start to standardize English spellings of Chinese names probably using Beijing Mandarin as the base. But my understanding is that only a few big place names received official English spellings (Beijing, not Peking) after concerns that the policy was just reinforcing English as the global language norm.

What is going on? This is insane.

New Haven Police named Quinxuan Pan as a person of interest in the death of Kevin Jiang.

Pin is a graduate of MIT as is Kevin's fiance.

They are exploring all angles including a possibile romantic angle (considering the number of times Kevin was shot.)

I think this is what is going on and it is horrifically sad.

Ita, although it often seems that in those situations the female is the target, assuming she is receiving protection, imo, speculation.rbbm.

Police Identify MIT Graduate Student As Person Of Interest In Newly Engaged Yale Student's Death

''Jiang was killed around 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 after spending a long day ice skating and ice fishing at a nearby lake with his fiancée Zion Perry, according to the New Haven Independent.

Police said Jiang was shot to death “multiple times” on Lawrence Street not far from Perry’s apartment in what authorities believe had been a “targeted” attack, according to New Haven Police Chief Otoniel Reyes.''

''Reyes declined to comment on whether authorities believe Pan and Perry had known one another but said investigators are “exploring absolutely every angle” and are “not ruling out” the possibility of a personal motive for the crime.''

''Anyone with information about Pan’s current whereabouts is urged to contact New Haven homicide detectives at (203) 946-6304 or police department’s anonymous tip line at 1-866-888-8477.''

New Haven Police named Quinxuan Pan as a person of interest in the death of Kevin Jiang.

The Chinese first name suggests direct Chinese origins. This could raise the possibility of flight back to China.

Hopefully, he is not only being placed on the "No Fly" list, but also on the "Arrest if Tries to Fly" list.

New Haven Police Search in North Haven After Naming Person of Interest in Homicide

''New Haven police were searching behind an Arby's on Washington Avenue in North Haven Thursday.

The restaurant is next to a Best Western hotel where police said 29-year-old Qinxuan Pan was last seen.''

''Several plain clothes officers were using a dog and a metal detector to search in the snow and a wooded area behind the Arby's.

The general manager of the Best Western said Pan checked in around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday with and ID and credit card. He never checked out and the room appeared to be untouched. The general manager said it didn't look like Pan stayed in the room Saturday night.''

''Qinxuan Pan was calm and chatty, not edgy or nervous, when the MIT graduate student showed up at a Mansfield car dealership around 11 a.m. last Saturday to pick up the 2015 GMC Terrain SLE he claimed he was so interested in buying he wanted his mechanic to look it over, a salesman said.

James P. Roane, who was confident after 21 years in the business that he had made a sale and that Pan was someone who could be trusted, said he attached dealer plates to the $15,000 SUV and watched the 29-year-old drive out of the lot.''

omg, so much new info in that article. the lying down in the car, changing cell number, etc

Roane then showed him the much larger Terrain.

“He literally laid down in the back and said ‘this will be fine. This will work,’ " Roane said in a telephone interview Thursday, adding that Pan told him he often slept in his vehicle during road trips as an explanation for laying down in the back of the SUV.

Roane said Pan’s decision to buy the Terrain after lying down was a “weird” one because when the seats are lowered, the resulting surface is bumpy and not conducive to sleeping. Other SUVs offer better sleeping options, he said.

New from this article:

Mansfield police asked Malden police to check at Pan’s residence for the SUV, where they spoke with his mother. “She told them that Qinxuan changed his cell phone number and wouldn’t tell them where he was,” Mansfield police wrote. Officers in Malden “said they have responded to her residence many times for mental illness issues,” the report stated.

Mansfield police posted a BOLO for the SUV as a stolen car around 10:40 p.m. and five minutes later, North Haven, Connecticut, police reported finding the Terrain stuck and disabled on railroad tracks. Pan, the Connecticut department said, had been driving it in a junkyard when it got stuck.

Pan, authorities alleged, had removed the Massachusetts dealer plate and was driving the SUV with Connecticut plates when they found him. The SUV was inoperable and police directed Pan toward a nearby motel, but he could not be found when police later went looking for him, according to records.

No offense to Mr. Roane, but a car salesman trusted someone?

This Pan must be real convincing. What was he doing in a junkyard?

Interesting. Especially this part:

Pan was last seen in the early morning hours of Thursday, driving with family members in metro Atlanta -- either in Brookhaven or Duluth. The Marshals said that family members said that Pan was carrying a black backpack and acting strange.

Do they not know he is wanted for car theft and potentially murder?

Reward offered in search for Qinxuan Pan; U.S. Marshals say he might be in Georgia
''NEW HAVEN — The U.S. Marshals Thursday announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the location and arrest of Qinxuan Pan, the Massachusetts man wanted for questioning in connection with the killing of the 26-year-old Yale graduate student last Saturday.''

''The U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force was asked by local authorities to assist in locating Pan, the U.S. Marshals Service said in a release Thursday.''

''MIT Wednesday confirmed Pan has been enrolled as a graduate student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science since 2014. He is listed as a graduate student with MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, which researches artificial intelligence, robotics, human-computer interaction and other areas.''

Person of Interest in Yale Student's Murder Believed to Have Visited Conn. and Mass. Car Dealerships: Police
''The man wanted for questioning in connection to the death of a Yale graduate student visited car dealerships in Connecticut and Massachusetts prior to the killing, according to New Haven police.

Qinxuan Pan, 29, visited car dealerships looking to purchase a small model SUV and even asked to test drive vehicles, according to police. Police said Pan also asked to bring the vehicles to his mechanic for inspection.

Police are asking any car dealerships who might have had contact with Pan in recent months to call New Haven police at 203-945-6304 or the anonymous tip line at 866-888-8477.''

My guess is trying to ditch the murder weapon

Good thinking. No other reason to be in a junkyard.

If the mom lied to the police she should get her tail hauled in.

Pan is an Artificial Intelligence Investigator? I had to look that up. Can this help him stay on the lam easier? All that knowledge and he gets stuck on train tracks in a junkyard in a stolen car.

Thinking of Kevin Jiang, and loved ones. Just not fair.
