I am seeking more information about a case affiliated with a family friend I was just made aware of. My grandmother's housekeeper, Vater (pronounced "Vay-da") Mae Thomas Wheeler was born in 1940 and died in 2009. Her mother allegedly disappeared from Washington DC along with another woman/friend when Vater was very little, maybe 3 or 4.

A family member or possibly a neighbor checking on Vater and her little brother found the young boy frozen to death, and Vater close to death herself. The heat had been shut off and the mother had been missing for awhile. Vater remembered being picked up by her grandfather and the feel of his warm coat that he gave her to stop her from freezing.

When Vater cleaned my grandmother's house, she found my mother's old book that was a collection of true crime cases, and asked to borrow it because it contained information about a case where two DC women who had disappeared had been murdered. The name of one of the women was Vater's mother's name, which she recognized immediately. Vater had never known what happened to her mother, but thought that this nonfiction book might have contained the real story about her. My grandmother was not sure, but she thought the deceased mother's name was Mary Stackhouse.

Because the death of this little boy and near-death of Vater happened in the mid 1940s, there is no information that I can find. The only information on Mary Stackhouse that I can find involves a Texas murder case. My mother does not remember anything about this book, or the story of Vater's mother and brother. Since Vater passed away and her husband retired after having taken over for Vater, we no longer have any contact with the family.

I hope someone might have heard something about this case, whether it be Vater's deceased brother, or the mother/two women who went missing from DC. Potential other locations could be Maryland, especially Clinton, MD or Prince George's County. Other family members are from or have now moved to North Carolina and South Carolina. TIA for any help or details!

I wish you luck in finding out more. You provided a pretty good summary and you probably found some of the same links I found when googling Vaters full name you listed at the top. Im not sure if these links below are connected but one thing to check if these are related is there may be a way to view the old obituary comments from others that could help to read all the comments in addition to the articles. Not sure if they are obtainable but worth a try.

Im not good at researching stuff like this so hoping others may be able to give more suggestions. Good Luck

You might try here:

Washington DC Genealogy: DCGenWeb Project of the USGenWeb

Genealogists are typically tenacious, and know where to find information. They know how to read names sounding out, so misspellings can be matched up. They know what questions to ask, and they know who to ask.

Nothing jumps out at me on FamilySearch. There are Stackhouse families in Pennsylvania & in West Virginia. Lots of middle initial V's, lots. Stagoski is a sound-alike surname, Vater's grandparents may have Americanized to Stackhouse. Bethel Thomas is not listed on FindAGrave, which is interesting.

The 4 daughters do have information, but someone has to ask the right questions &/or just get them talking & catch the relevant bits. If you can even find out where the daughters were born, we'd have more to go on clearly identifying Vater & so her brother & parents.

Vater's birthdate would be a great start. The daughters may know where Vater & Bethel were married. Request a copy of their marriage license. That document should include both of her parent's names among other information.

The obituary does not name a church or denomination. If Vater was part of a congregation at any point in her life, records are there as well.

What was Vater's address at any point? Often city directories are a great source of information.

Let me know if you gather any more scraps of information. Yes, I am tenacious & know where to look, but I'm quite far from DC!

Thanks, although I would rather pass on useful facts....

Sometimes mylife is worthless, but here is a possible birthdate, suggesting Vater was married at 15:

Vater Wheeler (M), 66 - Clinton, MD Background Report at MyLife.com™

May 23, 1942?

May 23, 1942 confirmed:

Vater Wheeler Obituary - Clinton, Maryland - Tributes.com

A lone surviving family member -- marriage would perhaps be an attractive option.

Prince George's County, Maryland GenWeb for those nosy locals:

Prince George's County, Maryland USGenWeb

Was Bethel Thomas in the military? The daughters should know which service.

Was Vater's father in the service? Many were in 1942.

Sorry, still learning how this site works, and must have posted in two different boards.

Your info and leads seem great, much further than I could go.

Vater's birthday was May 23, 1942, sorry I left that out in the initial post! Found it later on FindaGrave. I couldn't find any record of her through Family Search before 1990, one census thing maybe and a SS index as well as her obituary.

I couldn't find anything on Bethel Thomas either and Lacie Wheeler, her surviving husband, is still alive so much of his info is inaccessible.

The Fla. lead could be something although if she was born 1942 and this happened when she was very young, I don't think it could've been after 1950 at the very latest.

Thank you very much for your input.

I think Vater's father might have been named Peter or gone by Pete. Married at 15 doesn't sound outrageous, and I don't think Bethel was in the picture for his daughters' lives, so I don't know that they would want to share info or even discuss him.

Your suggestions and ideas got me going! Here is some additional information.

Bethel Thomas was born either 4/4/1940 or 4/1/1941 in South Carolina (possible Mullins, SC). He died May 1980, and was last listed in Cabin John, Montgomery, MD, but I cannot find any record of his marriage to Vater or any connection there at all. His father was Junior Thomas and mother was Lorraina Watts.

Additionally, Vater was born in Mullins, South Carolina, and I have confirmed that her maiden name was indeed Stackhouse.

There were a lot of hits on Stackhouse/Stockhouse/Steckhouse in that area in SC, although many of them were listed as being white, but Vater was black.

I did find a Mary Stackhouse from Harleesville, Dillon, SC who was born around 1922, which would put her at the right age to be Vater's mother. Mary's father was Pierce Stackhouse (b. ~1892), not quite Peter/Pete, but still a P name. He was widowed and lived/boarded with an Anettie Bethea, whom I believe might still have family connections with the Thomas family (Vater's daughters) today. If this is the right Mary Stackhouse and her father is this Pierce guy, he enlisted in the Army in 1942, the year Vater was born.

Worth noting again is that I do not believe Bethel Thomas was in any of Vater's daughters' lives, and that he did not have a good relationship with Vater.

Finally, some former addresses for Vater. Might be helpful, but I just don't know.
20735 Clinton, Prince Georges, Maryland, District of Columbia
6322 Clinton Way, Clinton, MD

These could all be false leads, or maybe they will spark something.

Thanks for clarifying her ethnicity.

Andrews AFB/Joint Base Andrews is right there -- still wonder about Bethel Thomas' military service.

The youngest daughter's name, Vernica, was on FamilySearch in part of my poking around for Stackhouse &/or Thomas, could indicate a family connection.

IDK but would like to figure out a lot more!

Military could definitely be a good route to go.

Today I did some more research. Of Vater's four daughters, one, Gale, has passed away in 2016.

There was also a reference from one of the daughters to a "Grandma Addie." My guess is that this would have been great-grandma, if Vater's mother (Maybe Mary?) was dead before they were born.

There was an Addie Stackhouse born June 3, 1909 in SC. Her husband was Boyd Stackhouse (Addie's maiden name was Pittman). They had several children that I can account for, the only girl being an Arleene. If there was no Mary, maybe this is Vater's mother? I tried repeating many of my search queries using Arleene/Arlene Stackhouse, but had no luck. A pre-1950 murder puts a lot of limits on what is available through public record.

Keep at it, keeping writing on the stickie notes, keep moving the stickie notes around -- you'll find the patterns.

Arleen Stackhouse is indeed promising.

In the sequence of Vater's story, was her mother's death shortly after leaving the children, months after leaving the children, unknown?

I am not sure of this. She would have been 3 or 4, and only remembered being very very cold and her grandfather finding her. I am unclear on how many days it could've been that she was alone, but it was suggested that the power had been shut off which would imply that it was a longer period of time.

I double-checked this again with my grandmother, who said the reason the father was also gone was that he was out of town "for the week," so I don't think it was THAT long of a time, but likely in the winter so that the freezing situation was possible.

Such a curious story!

There is a Laci Wheeler linked somehow in MD. Would be 89 years old at the current time. Don't know of direct link but they shared an address..the 6322 Clinton Way.
