WASHINGTON - A small aircraft has crashed in the Potomac River near the vicinity of Reagan National Airport, according to officials.

Fireboats are currently on the scene as the response team works to manage the situation, D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services reported.

The details of the crash, including the cause and whether anyone was aboard, have not yet been confirmed. Emergency teams are actively engaged in rescue and recovery operations.

CNN Live:

CRJ700. Large regional jet that seats about 60 or so people. No word on how many passengers were actually on board.

Plane crashed on approach.

Yeah. When we first heard “small plane,” I was originally thinking a private aircraft. This sure as hell ain’t that.

Is it just me or did the helicopter seem to make a straight beeline towards the plane?

So sad. It seemed like the plane was just about to land too. My thoughts go out to the families on board both aircraft.

Oh, no—that looks horrific. I can’t imagine that’s survivable, especially if the river’s anywhere near as icy/frozen over as I think it is in January. Thinking of their poor families.

I'm wondering if the plane's collision avoidance system 'looks' backward (behind plane) in addition to forward? Wondering if helicopter had collision avoidance system? I would think so. MOO

ETA attachment which pictures AN EXAMPLE of the TCAS (traffic collision avoidance system) view that seems likely used by this plane (per CNN) but MOO. It's appearing to be facing forward.

Plane which crashed near D.C. airport was carrying 64 people, including 4 crew members, according to emergency services.

It's still unknown how many people were on board the Black Hawk helicopter.
