ok. something is VERY wrong here. i surely do hope the american government is looking in to these dying americans, but i won't hold my breath. i also won't be travelling there, and will advise my friends and family not to, as well.

ETA: so this was BEFORE orlando and portia were there, or was it 5 days before the most recent couple that died there under mysterious circumstances? either way, this is sounds like the wild west over there.

Could it be mold at the resort?
I was thinking pesticides. I used to go on vacation to the DR a lot. I would sometimes get a note under my door warning that they were fumigating for pests and to keep out of the room during a certain time period. I wonder if it was some type of pesticide that they breathed in or even just absorbed through their skin.

ETA— they could have ingested it too somehow. There is a bunch of articles about pesticide poisoning and pulmonary edema is one of the results. Glyphosate Poisoning with Acute Pulmonary Edema

When I searched for poisons that could cause pulmonary edema, Barbiturate poisoning came up a lot. Maybe someone spiked their drinks to sedate them for whatever reason but ended up killing them. I’m sure that would show up on toxicology though because that would be a common drug to look for.

Scuba diving is associated with pulmonary edema, too.

There is also this Connecticut man accused of manslaughter last month after claims that he was attacked in front of his daughter by a hotel worker in his hotel room. This is just a hop skip and a jump away over on Anguilla. (I didn't believe his story at first, but after reading the info in this thread and elsewhere, I'm beginning to think there is more truth to the American man's story.)

A tourist accused of killing a hotel worker was fending off an attack, his family says - CNN

There was also this English couple found dead at an Egyptian resort in 2018 from...who knows what, as you can read in the article they list several options for means of death. (carbon monoxide, food poisoning, legionnaires disease, the list goes on).

"The Red Sea governorate initially described the Coopers’ deaths in a press release as “normal death of an English old man and his wife in Hurghada city." (Oh yeah, they just died of old age together in their room. They were 69 and 63.)

Egypt hotel deaths: UK couple's room had unusual smell - official

So, go to a beautiful resort for the vacation of a lifetime, with your partner, and you might get to die with them. I'm pretty sure the odds of that happening are a billion to none, but here we are. I'll never be convinced that nothing nefarious is happening to these couples, nor that we will ever hear the truth from these governments that depend on tourism.

Has pulmonary edema been confirmed as the cause of death for this Maryland couple or just a theory? Again, (not being snarky) what are the chances they would BOTH get that at the exact same time and die within hours of each other?

And would pesticides kill you (2 people!) on the spot like that? I would think that would be something that would make you sick for days, even weeks, before it would kill you. (I could be very wrong about that). And why was it just those 2 that got sick/died? Wouldn't the other people who came into contact with the pesticides be dropping dead, too?

This is nuts. And I think it's all 100 percent intentional. I think it's something to do with the people working at these resorts, too.

MOO.

One TripAdvisor review of this hotel says that something very serious happened with a member of the bar staff and the TripAdvisor member had to get the lawyers and embassy involved. You can see it under safety reviews...

There was also the rape and murder of that American girl by her hotel security guard, just a couple of months ago in Costa Rica.

Not saying I think there is a group of hotel worker serial killers, but it’s so frightening when I think of how much trust I put into hotel workers, generally, and security guards, anywhere I travel to! You let your guard down when you go on vacation, and especially in a resort or hotel!

Which hotel @smoghat? I’m curious to read that.

Pesticides could in fact kill or cause severe health damage quickly.
There was a family poisoned by pesticides when they went on vacation. They didn't die but became gravely ill. Only mother eventually recovered, the rest of them suffered severe damage.
"The teens and their parents fell gravely ill and suffered seizures during a March vacation to St. John. The family was exposed to methyl bromide, a restricted-use pesticide."

Bad/counterfeit alcohol can also kill. If methanol is consumed instead of ethanol that can be deadly. Woman from PA who died at the same resort reportedly just had a drink at the mini bar before she collapsed.

I actually thought of that too. I’m definitely thinking a poisoning of some sort. It’s just really weird for both of them to die at the same time from the same thing without it being a poison or toxin.

That is what I was thinking of when I read about the death of these two. I couldn’t remember where it was that the family was vacationing, thank you for posting the article.

Investigators need to pull all the mini bar bottles of liquor and water to check to see if any were spiked.

It seems like it is either that or maybe like others suggested it could be bad fake alcohol poured back into regular more expensive looking bottles that look new. That actually does happen unfortunately where places are trying to save money illegally like that. Even regular bars have been known to do that or dilute their liquor to save money.

The one lady collapsed shortly after drinking from her mini bar. And because certain people in certain rooms were affected it could be something liquid in the mini bars.

And the possibility of pesticides or carbon monoxide is also a good thing to look at.

Hopefully investigators will get to the bottom of this because it is frightening and it has happened way too frequently.

The only thing I am 100 percent sure of is that the recent two people from NY did not just die of natural old age on the same exact day while on their vacation.
