Family of Ruth Haut revives cold murder case

On Feb. 27, 1992, Haut’s body was found lying in an orange grove in St. Cloud, on Hickory Tree Road and US-192.

“It’s frustrating,” Wagner noted.

Haut’s family has kept VHS copies of Crimeline shows asking for tips.

One tape recording said, “On the night of Feb. 26, 1992, 41-year-old Dr. Ruth Haut disappeared from her office.”

Wagner said someone scheduled a late appointment with Haut that night, on 20 N. Bermuda Avenue.

When Haut didn’t come home, Wagner went looking for her and noticed the office door was open and the phone lines cut off.

Wagner said the person who did this used Haut's bank card at an ATM in Vero Beach, prior to dumping her body in St. Cloud.

Deputies said a child discovered Haut's body in an orange grove on Hickory Tree Road, 10 miles southeast of St. Cloud.

"She was (lying) facedown approximately about here," Wagner said, pointing at the spot.
Haut had been stabbed almost a dozen times and her throat had been slit, investigators said.

"It's very hard to comprehend of actually what she went through. It's pretty scary," Wagner said. "This person is living their life out free."

imo. speculation.
Police Seek Profile Of Chiropractor's Killer
"Police Seek Profile Of Chiropractor's Killer
April 4, 1992|By Henry Pierson Curtis Of The Sentinel Staff
An earlier attempt to produce new leads failed. Sheriff Jon Lane had released a photograph of a suspect using Haut's automatic teller machine card at a SunBank branch on Route AIA in Vero Beach. The slightly built, 5-foot-2-inch to 5-foot-5-inch suspect wore a hooded sweatshirt as a disguise.

Investigators believe Haut, 41, had been abducted just hours before, at about 7:30 p.m., from her Bermuda Avenue office. The time of her death has not been released.

Information released Friday included the sighting of a white 1979 Monte Carlo sedan parked in front of Haut's office the night of her death. A passer-by noticed the car about the time of Haut's disappearance, King said."

"About the same time, another witness reported seeing a white sedan driving erratically northward on Bermuda Avenue near Haut's office. The car then sped east on Vine Street, King said, and there may have been two people in it."

"Authorities believe Haut's killer or killers drove to Vero Beach and back - a minimum 3-hour trip - and then dumped the doctor's body. However, they declined to say why they believe that.

Investigators hope to identify a small, late-model red pickup seen parked near the grove the previous night, King said. The truck, which had a crescent-shaped logo on the driver's door, was either a Chevrolet S-10 or Ford Ranger with a black side-to-side tool box in the bed, he said."

We are doing a podcast on this case. You may be someone we've already spoken with, but please reach out to us. Thanks!

In the black and white top pic. it appears as though the suspect has hairy arms and possibly long hair spilling out under the hood. Also looks as if the top button on his left pocket is missing. Wondering if a button was found anywhere and if so, does it retain any of the suspect's DNA?
imo, speculation.
Detectives try to generate leads in 20-year-old murder
"They also released an investigative profile that suggests the suspect used his charm to manipulate Haut and could still live in the area."

This is the coward seen using doctor Ruth’s debit card on the night of February 26, 1992 in Vero Beach. He is 5’4-5’6, a red truck was seen leaving Hickory Tree Road in St Cloud. Ruth was found by a kid on a school bus in an orange grove. Ruth was abducted from the Sandra Roberts Chiropractors clinic on 22N Bermuda Ave, Kissimmee FL.

Murderer of Ruth Haut still sought 26 years later
"By 1995, investigators named Curtis J. Huff Jr. as the primary suspect. He was already serving time at the state prison in Hardee County for a 1993 attempted murder that occurred during a botched robbery at a Kissimmee motel.

The judge who convicted Huff in that case told him, “My picture of you is someone who is afflicted with deep psychological disturbance and there’s no doubt in my mind that you intended the death of your victim.”

Detectives told the News-Gazette in 1995 that Huff had been a suspect all along and that they had “some things on Ruth’s case that are leading us places.”

The affidavit used to execute a search warrant at Huff’s father’s house in St. Cloud where he lived and to obtain Huff’s DNA, detailed why he was the primary suspect.

It reveals some of the most damning evidence linking Huff to Haut’s murder including:

Huff’s red pick-up truck was seized in the 1993 attempted murder case, and matched the description of a vehicle seen near the area where Haut’s body was discovered the night she disappeared. Tire tracks at the scene matched the tires on Huff’s truck.

A “Children of the Sun” cassette tape without a box was found in Huff’s truck. A box for a “Children of the Sun” cassette tape, minus the tape, was found near Haut’s body.

Huff, 5 feet 4 inches tall, fit the height of the suspect in the ATM footage.

Huff grew up in Vero Beach and had lived a short distance from the bank where Haut’s ATM card was used. Huff’s girlfriend told police he often traveled to Vero Beach although he lived in St. Cloud.

Footprints made by Reebok tennis shoes at the scene matched a pair of Reeboks seized by investigators at Huff’s father’s home.

But despite all the evidence that seemed to link Huff to Haut’s murder, he was never charged or prosecuted.

“Why didn’t they do anything when they found out when (Huff) was connected to Ruth’s murder in 1995?” Wagner told the News-Gazette. “I’m upset. I need answers.”

Who killed Ruth Haut? Mourners, law enforcement still seek justice 27 years later
Exactly 27 years ago on Tuesday, chiropractor Ruth Haut was abducted from her Kissimmee office and murdered.

Her friends and family gathered in the rain on that sad anniversary to remember Haut and to help bring her killer to justice.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office reopened the cold case in 2012, but who killed Ruth Haut and why remains a mystery.

“This case is very much active,” Sheriff Russ Gibson told those who gathered alongside Haut’s mourners and law enforcement Tuesday night.

"In 1995, investigators named Curtis J. Huff Jr. as the primary suspect in Haut’s murder. Huff grew up in Vero Beach and lived in St. Cloud at the time of the murder, according to police reports. By then, Huff was already incarcerated at the state prison in Hardee County for a 1993 attempted murder that occurred during a botched robbery at a Kissimmee motel.

Whether Huff is still a suspect is unknown.

Gibson and his detectives are keeping certain details close to the vest to preserve the investigation, he said. But they are encouraging anyone with any information they think could be relevant to the case to call the police."

The Florida Sheriffs Association graciously pledged an additional $5,000.00 towards a reward; thereby, increasing the total amount of the Crimeline reward from $5,000.00 to $10,000.00.
