This outbreak did not start 'many years' ago. It started last December and was not finally identified as an Ebola outbreak until 24th March 2014. I think Yoda's information will have been the same as what I am going to post.

Reliable information can be found using google and reputable sources of information like the World Health Organisation website.

As Harmony said people should be backing up statements of fact with links.

•February 2014 - Outbreak of a haemorrhagic illness in south-east Guinea
•March 2014 - Outbreak of Ebola confirmed in south-east Guinea
•Later that month, tests confirm Ebola has spread into Liberia
•May 2014 - Sierra Leone confirms Ebola has spread to the Kailahun district, in the east of the country
•June 2014 - MSF declares the Ebola outbreak is out of control
•July 3 2014 - Death toll: Guinea, 303. Liberia, 65. Sierra Leone, 99. Total number of deaths in West Africa, 467

I am sorry if this sounds really prissy, but people are basing their fear (and in some cases criticism) on incorrect information which is not good.

Effective management of this needs everyone understanding the facts about this outbreak and how to deal with it.

If people want to get a great understanding of the outbreak the I cannot recommend the WHO website highly enough. There you will find FAQ, fact sheets, updates on the progression, reports on actions taken - everything!

According to an official briefed on the situation, preliminary information was that the passenger was vomiting on flight but did not display most of the other symptoms.

"He's now being treated with protocols as if he has it, but no clear indication at this point that he does," the official said.

Agreed. A lot just isn't adding up. If it was bad, I could understand why they would lie. I'm sure no one wants panic. I think these next few days will reveal a lot. I really wish I wouldn't have watched contagion last weekend :doh:

JMO The CDC is interested in epidemiology. They feel comfortable saying that they know how to identify and treat a disease and that they know the protocol to control it so that it doesn't become epidemic................but they are talking about huge numbers of people, not scattered cases. This is no comfort to anyone who may have been exposed on a plane or a vacation, or in their doctors office. I guess we just have to trust that this won't become epidemic in the USA......but there will be a lot more cases here, until it is wiped out in W Africa. JMO

Great chart. Thank you . If anyone has time or inclination or desire, I recommend a book called ' the Hot Zone'. It is not a fiction and all about ebola . I read it forever ago and have forgotten much of the info . But it left me with a very healthy fear of this virus. It was so long ago and no mention of it in so long, I really never thought it would be an issue in the US or abroad. But I've had my ears on it all summer and thinking " holy spit'' .

Hmm...I'm not sure talking about ebola on a forum is proof that people do or do not care. I think there's a lot of people that probably cared before it came to the US, but maybe didn't feel the need to discuss it. Then again, I'm sure there's a lot of people who could care less about ebola or any disease for that matter unless it's effecting them. I don't think some people took it very seriously because they've never been effected by such diseases and think it's just a commonality in rural countries. The fact of the matter is that it's deadly and spreading fast and if people do not care, then we will all pay the price for their apathy.

I was aware of Ebola back in 1987, when Robin Cook wrote a fictional novel called Outbreak about Ebola. It was made into a TV movie called Virus. I was also posting on the earlier threads, but then when things seemed to get contained in Nigeria, the thread quieted down and I found other threads of interest. Ebola scares me because as we now know it's reached the US, any of us can be affected by being in the wrong place at the wrong time!! It's far more deadly in a short period of time than TB, the flu, colds, sars, AIDS, malaria, diptheria, or any of the other diseases mentioned in this thread.

She just received a brand new secluded home, transport, and food being delivered everyday. Sure, the treatment before CDC and local government was a little slow (and incompetent, if not still so), but she has zero room to be complaining about his condition.

What she should be asking is if a miracle is going to spare her life, her children's lives, and the lives of her nephews.

Exactly! This is the point I was trying to make earlier. I just don't think ebola and the diseases you mentioned are comparable for this exact reason. I totally agree with your post!
