I wonder if he wasn't from the US to have not received medical care for the broken thigh bone. He had to have been immobile and in enormous pain for a long period of time.

The person who dragged him into the woods would have left behind DNA. It's not like that person would be expected to have gloves to conceal his identity.
 
Not sure what the state of the US healthcare system was at the time, but it's possible he couldn't pay for his leg to get fixed.
