There will always be those who can't help themselves and will get out and drive around in the flood and walk outside in sewage filled water and wildlife.

We had that with the recent floods in Nova Scotia. A few young guys decided to take a boat out despite orders to stay off the streets and then they had to be rescued once they hit some brush.

Well, here in Sarasota, the grandkitty Banjo & I weathered the storm pretty well. We enjoyed our own personal hurricane party with homemade chocolate cream pie. I let him taste the cool whip on the tip of my finger.

My dinner was Cesar Salad. Banjo's was his kitty food with a spinach leaf and his calming meds mixed in. (I'm allergic to cats by the way - hence the catio.)

We have had more rain today than all of yesterday and last night. At times it is a steady rain, and at times it is a deluge with wind The sun comes out briefly between the rain storms. I just did a yard tour.

The water is puddling in the back yard in low spots. There's few oak branches and a bunch of twigs down, the plastic lattice blew a few feet. I had it leaning against the oak tree. My new silver buttonwood tree lost a small branch. A few plants in the new butterfly garden are leaning. Trash cans fell over. Nothing like Hurr Ian last year.

There was also problems with looters. They would take a boat after the storm to empty houses where people had evacuated and steal from them. National Guard had closed the only bridge to the islands but boats were used.

Mr Bobbitt survived:

Cedar Key, Fla., resident Michael Bobbitt rode out Hurricane Idalia at his home. He describes the experience and how his community will rebuild after the storm.

And again:

Citrus County is like the forgotten little kid in this story lol Not much coverage of the damage, which is going to be major on the west side of Hwy 19.

They faired exceptionally well, until late morning when the surge came. I was on facetime with my daughter and you could visibly see it rising. These people evacuated...then returned home, only to have their house flood and have to swim out of their windows.

The main road through town, US HWY 19 is shut down at both ends of town due to the flooding. If you look at the map, 19 is approx 9 miles inland from the Gulf, but the Crystal River, King's Bay and all the canals, makes the entire area flood prone.

Just south in Hernando, the entire beach area is shutdown. Roads/homes are flooded. The National Guard is performing rescues. In Hernando, we aren't as dramatic at Citrus County....we take things in stride:

I was incredibly fortunate, to only have a few limbs down and not to even lose power. The home that I was going to purchase, but someone beat my offer, is completely flooded.
My mother's house has started to flood in a converted garage and high tide is not for another hour or more.
My stepmother is trapped in her home in South GA due to downed trees with no power and minimal cell service.
Sounds bad, but could have been so much worse!

I went outside to take a pic of the huge branch that fell on my house and was getting pelted by pinecone missiles so beat a retreat. (This is only the first of three larger branches that have fallen since. My entire back yard is now fallen large branches. Thankfully- I have a metal roof) For reference- I am 65 miles inland.

Oh no!
I was watching a webcam in Gulfport. The surge wasn't bad until most of the storm had passed to the north. The western winds in the southern part of the storm pushed all the water on shore. It wasn't particularly windy either. Just water coming in like a bad high tide. Around 5 am, downtown Gulfport was flooded.
______

I hope your mom and daughter are OK..Sounds like the worst is coming.

When I see Gulfport I think of MS, I guess because I’ve been to Biloxi a few times.

Your butterfly garden looks fine, just a bit soggy.

When I plant trees, I plant small small trees, (1-5 gallon) so the buttonwood branch looks large to me! Hope the new buttonwood is OK.

@branmuffin shared the webcam with us last night. So, I watched it. It's on Tampa bay. (I think)

At least the water is receding a bit. It'll be worse when high tide comes in again, though. I can't believe that yellow Kia Soul is still sitting in the same place. Did anyone see the snakes in the water around 2 am? I felt like I was watching one of those teenage horror flicks where they're walking into a house with a homicidal maniac saying, "this looks like a safe space to hide!" I don't think those snakes were water moccasins, maybe rat snakes and smaller non venomous snakes. But still. And I'm not the least scared of snakes, I just like to know where they are.

What freaked me out during TS, Lucy (?), I can't remember now, but it was the deluge of fire ants that started invading our porch. I was freaked to the max, thinking that they were going to take over the house. The kids were little, they were screaming, and honestly, I was ready to join them.

But, no, Mommies are fearless. Of course. I was out there spraying poison on them. Brushing them off with a broom, there were so many.

Just saw footage from Cedar Key.
Flooded nearly to the top of a stop sign, with waves completely covering it intermittently.

Eta: I think they just said the footage I’m referencing is from Keaton Beach. I’m personally not familiar with the place.
Cedar Key is near Rosewood.
I saw a movie about Rosewood. They kept mentioning Cedar Key.

It's mostly rural.
There was a sawmill and pencil factory there.
I guess there were lots of Red Cedars there. (Currently planted for timber throughout the eastern and central US and harvested and widely available for fencing and siding)

Apparently, the town was in decline and a 1896 hurricane was the last blow.
Herbert Hoover created the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge
It's a wildlife/tourist area.

I was watching the beach cam during that time. I had no idea that downtown was flooded. I didn't see anyone on the beach.

Yeah a few tilted plants in both butterfly garden beds. I’ll see how they do when the last of the Adalia tail lashing passes thru. The dead branch out back is from the big oak. Here’s my new little silver buttonwood. The broken branch is maybe 12”? I literally went out 3:30 am to check on it! The Crape Myrtle did fine too.

Feel for those who made it through the hurricane and then later are flooded. That is what happened to my neighborhood during Hurricane Florence.
