Please do not mistake my wondering as a defense or an excuse. I am sick over this and cannot fathom what was going through her mind. I'm wondering if being unhoused was the motivator of this horrendous crime. Perhaps she felt overwhelmed by the situation or found it too difficult to care for herself and a child while not having a permanent residence. She decided this was the best way out. I am curious to know if there was a history of physical abuse prior to this act.

She would only have thought this was best for herself. "If I can't take care of him, no one else can." Also that she felt like a failure so took it out on him. No love nor connection toward her son, IMO.
