I'm also surprised that it keeps getting pushed off. Perhaps someone thought it was a bit too ironic to sentence her on Valentine's Day after she'd testified against her ex-husband at his murder trial (MOO). I'm not seeing any recent local journalist chatter about the reschedule.

She pled guilty to 2nd-degree murder, robbery, kidnapping, armed burglary, and aggravated battery "with no guarantees that her potential sentence could be waived...But the plea and planned testimony gives prosecutors legal basis to go below the guidelines." Guidelines would be 31 years to life. (older article but the points about her charges and sentencing guidelines remain valid)

Melissa Jo Schafer sentenced to 30 years in 1999 Jacksonville murder

Mar. 25, 2022

Head bowed low, emotion in her voice, a Jacksonville police officer's ex-wife said she was "so very sorry" for her part in Saad Kawaf's 1999 death.

But after Melissa Jo Schafer spoke, and her attorney and the prosecutor recommended a 25-year prison term, she was sentenced Friday to 30 years as an accomplice in the convenience store owner's murder.

Schafer, 52, accepted a plea deal in exchange for testifying against William Robert Baer Jr., who was her husband when they orchestrated their plot to rob Kawaf. She pleaded guilty on Dec. 18 to second-degree murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and aggravated battery for her involvement in the stabbing death of the 39-year-old.

A former Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer accused of murdering the man he was supposed to be surveilling cites his years with agency as one reason he should be granted bond.

Former detective William Baer is charged along with his ex-wife Melissa Schafer in the 1999 stabbing death of convenience store owner Saad Kawaf. JSO announced the arrests in the decades-long cold case in June. Baer, 67, has been held in the Duval County Jail without bond ever since. Schafer, 50, was arrested in Missouri but hasn’t yet been brought to Jacksonville

Former Jacksonville detective accused of murder cites his police career as a reason for release

Words fail me ……

This - Former Jacksonville detective accused of murder cites his police career as a reason for release -

Who is he kidding? I would cite his police career as a reason to keep him IC! He (allegedly) murders a man, a valuable member of the community with a wife and family who have missed out on so much by the loss of Saad Kawaf , whilst he, Baer was a serving Law Enforcement Detective Officer and then has the gall to say that he should be released on bond because he’s trustworthy as a result of his Police career ?
Get this P of S person parading as a so called man , a new job as a comedian- he seems to like having a joke around!! Grrrrr!
