Did she just up and one day decide to murder her husband and take off?

She had a previous judgment against her for close to 100K for stealing from her disabled sister. (She was the payee on her SSDI as well as inheritance) She has not paid a dime on this. Apparently, her husband, who owned a successful small business, removed her from all of his accounts, to protect his assets from the judgment. She wrote checks to herself from the business account and then cashed them. No one knows for sure if her husband was killed before or after this transaction.
So...it sounds like she is desperate to gamble and is willing to kill to keep playing slots. I guess that's the only reason I think she is still in the US. She wouldn't want to give up casinos.

Do you have a link about this judgment?

This article states There is no record that Riess was ever ordered to repay the money or that she was charged with a crime in the case.

In February 2016, Riess was removed as her sister's guardian and conservator. She did not contest her removal. That same month, the newly appointed guardian and conservator asked the court to order Riess to repay more than $78,000 to her sister's account.
There is no record that Riess was ever ordered to repay the money or that she was charged with a crime in the case. Officials of the new guardian and conservator, Alternative Resolutions Inc., declined to comment Monday.

After reading about her, she definitely had a gambling problem. 2016 she was ordered to pay back her sister $100,000 because she took it for gambling.

It stated that she moved money from husband's business account to his personal account. Then wrote a check to herself and cashed at bank. IMO I understand that married people have separate accounts but I'm guessing they made everything separate after that incident. Her actions were probably watched closely so she wouldn't gamble. Her urge must have driven her to plot this out and kill her hubby.

Fact is she went gambling right after in Iowa.

IMO her kids are probably estranged from her besides her sister... they all tried to get her help.

That pic of her with brown hair....I wonder if she bleached it blonde after murdering her husband in an attempt to disguise herself.

When she's caught, she may have red hair...Watch out all redheads!

Seriously, this woman is obviously dangerous if she resorts to stealing ($100K !) and killing people in order to feed her addiction.
LE needs to put out the alert in Las Vegas....one can be so anonymous there, so many gamblers and crowds.

This case should be getting a lot more National Attention. She has murdered two people and is armed and dangerous. I live in Fort Myers and SOB's (Smokin' Oyster Brewery) is a restaurant I go to often with family and friends (their garlic crab legs!!). It's really disturbing to me that my Mom could have easily been her target if she had run into her when she was preying on women who resembled her in age/looks.

It is getting national coverage. I’m in the Boston area and saw it on the NBC Nightly News last night and HLN several times yesterday. (HLN runs in the background at home. Don’t judge, lol.)

eta: and it’s on Good Morning America right now.

More local coverage. Does anyone else find it rather odd that a woman who lived in a very small town for over ten years has no friends speaking up?

Nope, not odd at all, IMO, especially with her history and the fact that she hasn't been caught yet. Compulsive gamblers push everyone away because they only ask their friends and family for money constantly. Any friends she may have had before the gambling got bad were probably not speaking to her anymore by the time she murdered her husband and went on the run. And anyone who may have dirt on her history (like friends she borrowed money from) is not going to want to speak to the press while she is still on the run. She has allegedly murdered 2 people. If I was a friend of hers in the past, I wouldn't want to speak up and risk her coming after me. JMO.

I don't find it odd Stephanie. Given she was willing to steal from Family her track record with friends may be same. Addicts lose much. If she had any friends left they may be too frightened to speak out until she is caught. IMO it will be her addiction that gets her caught. She must be jonesing by now.

[h=1]U.S. marshals put up billboards seeking 'coldblooded killer' Lois Riess[/h]
New billboards featuring the face of a southern Minnesota gambling grandmother believed to have killed her husband in Blooming Prairie, Minn., and a woman she met in a Florida bar are going up in four states this week as the U.S. marshal’s office intensifies its search for the suspect they’ve dubbed “Losing Streak Lois.”

Billboards are going up in Texas, New Mexico, California and Arizona in hopes of generating tips that could lead authorities to Lois A. Riess, the 56-year-old woman who has been on the run since March 23 when authorities found her husband dead.
The billboard campaign comes as the marshal’s office is offering a $5,000 reward for information that could help them find the woman who is now part of a nationwide search. CrimeStoppers of Florida is offering a $1,000 reward.
