Marcus Arbery said his son, who aspired to be a boxer, was athletic and known for taking daily jogs. Ahmaud Arbery lived in Brunswick, one town over from Satilla Hills, where the McMichaels live.

"He took his body very seriously, always ran and had pride in everything he did," said Marcus Arbery. "It cuts me deeply how his life was taken. I would have preferred them to come and take my life instead."

Cooper said when police told her that her youngest son was shot and killed inside a home during a burglary she had no reason to question it "because it was authority talking."

McQueen’s sons, Rafael and Akeem Baker, grew up playing sports with Arbery, she said. “It’s ridiculous that this young man is gone and these two are sitting around having dinner right now. We understand that the people who live in this neighborhood didn’t do this. So we don’t want to be disrespectful to them. But we’ve got to be heard.”

In fact, some residents joined the march. Nancy and Ann (both declined to give last names) filed in with the marchers at Zellwood Drive. Nancy said she often saw Arbery jogging through the neighborhood. She just wanted to show her support.

“It’s my neighborhood,” Nancy said. “I had seen him jogging. It scares me that something was this reckless. I know the McMichaels, but this just wasn’t right.”

"Complete shock. I’ve never been involved in anything like that before,” Bryan said. “Complete shock.”

[SNIP]

“I am not feeling safe at all… I haven’t felt safe in at least 3 to 5 days now,” Bryan said. “Like Amy (Elrod, Bryan’s fiancée) has said, the threats have been real.”

[SNIP]

“I had nothing to do with it. I’m trying to get my life back to normal, and it’s been smeared for the last week,” Bryan said. “I was told I was a witness and I’m not sure what I am, other than receiving a bunch of threats.”

Gough said people should be thanking his client.

"But for his action, there would be no evidence of this crime," Gough said.

New video appears to show Ahmaud Arbery moments before his death

In a statement, the owners of the under-construction home say they have no relationship with the McMichaels, and would never have wanted what they call a "vigilante response."

"First, and most important, the English family -- the homeowners -- want Ahmaud Arbery's parents to know that they are very sorry for the loss of their son and they are praying for them," said the statement from Elizabeth Graddy, attorney for homeowner Larry English. "Second, it is crucial to understand that the English family -- the homeowners -- were not part of what the McMichaels did. The first accounts suggested a link between the McMichaels and the homeowners, but there is none. The English family had no relationship with the McMichaels and did not even know what had occurred until after Mr. Arbery's death was reported to them. After seeing Mr. Arbery's photo in news reports, Larry English did not even think Mr. Arbery was the person that appears in this video. Even if it had been, however, Mr. English would never have sought a vigilante response, much less one resulting in a tragic death."
