STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Shirley Vinson Merritt's obituary gives no hint to the tragedy that took her life - but one glaring omission does.
Among her survivors, the notice of her death mentions one son, a daughter-in-law and many grandchildren. But nowhere is the name of Richard Merritt - the son accused of killing her - ever mentioned.

Richard is on the run from U.S. Marshals after he allegedly stabbed his mother to death. Now, a manhunt is underway to find a man facing a murder charge in addition to other crimes to which he had pleaded guilty just days earlier.

Because before he was an accused murderer, Richard Merritt was a disgraced attorney who pleaded guilty to theft, forgery and elder exploitation charges. He was facing 15 years in prison but hadn't been taken in yet.
This was in late January. Shirley was found dead on Feb. 2 at her Planters Row home. Investigators at the time believed Richard may be driving her brown 2009 Lexus RX350 with a Georgia tag that reads CBV6004.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - The trial of Richard Merritt, who is accused of brutally murdering his mother, is expected to continue on Monday in DeKalb County.

Prosecutors say the disbarred attorney was supposed to turn himself in to prison to begin serving a 15-year prison sentence for stealing money from his clients in 2019.

The jury learned Friday about Merritt’s life as a fugitive living in Nashville.

They heard from a woman he met on a dating app. She testified she knew him as Mick Malveaux from Louisiana and says they dated for several months.

GA v. Richard Merritt: Disgraced Attorney Accused of Killing Mother

Posted at 6:00 AM, May 19, 2023 and last updated 8:32 AM, May 23, 2023

The prosecution rested its case in the murder case against fugitive lawyer Richard Merritt Tuesday morning. Judge Courtney Johnson also denied the defense's motion for judgment of acquittal.

Merritt is accused of killing his mother Shirley Merritt on the day he was set to turn himself in to authorities for his financial crimes. He was on the run in Tennessee for eight months.

Fugitive lawyer #RichardMerritt said a cartoon rock, which depicted his financial crimes, was sent to his mother's home in January 2019, a month before his mother, 77-year-old #ShirleyMerritt, was killed.

Richard testified that the cartoon rock and threats he had been receiving impacted his mother's health — so far that she was hospitalized.

Is anyone else watching this?
The defendant took the stand, and his story about two men breaking in with guns, taking them down to the basement, then killing only his mother because she wouldn't be quiet (with a knife from the kitchen, not the guns they brought) has got to be one of the silliest stories ever. He said these men were there because they were mad about all the money he stole from his vulnerable clients, and was going to prison for.
Then two gunmen then stabbed his mother 77 times with a knife from her own kitchen, bludgeoned her with a weight from her basement, then left Richard unharmed - with a stern warning not to go to the police, or the rest of his family would get the same. So he took his mother's car and threw away her phone, drove to Nashville, living under and assumed name, and moved in with a woman he met on a dating app until he was arrested - all for his family's safety.
Honestly! It doesn't even make sense! This is the best he could come up with?
