He was reportedly travelling from Munich to Venice and had not been heard from since Aug. 2, in Bad Tölz, Germany, according to a family member.

Freiheit, who is 32 and an avid hiker, having climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu and Everest’s base camp in the past, is from Brandon.

The Tölz police are launching a search for Jeff David Freiheit. The Canadian, who was alone on the Munich-Venice long-distance hiking trail, has been missing since August 2.

He left Munich on 31 July. Last seen in the Tölzer Land. The family of the 32-year-old had reported to the police in Tyrol after the man's trail had been lost. The Austrian officials forwarded the case to their colleagues in Tölz.

"We do not yet know exactly where something might have happened on the way", says Andreas Rohrhofer, deputy inspection chief of the Tölz police, on request. It is clear at the moment that Freiheit left Tölz at 6 a.m. on 2 August for Lenggries. "He spent the night in Tölz and called me in the morning," reports Freiheit's wife Selena Anne in response to a question from the Tölzer Kurier.

"He was still seen in the area of the Tölzer hut at the Brauneck," Rohrhofer says. From there the path led him towards Tutzinger Hütte and Benediktenwand. "We don't know if he's arrived at the cabin," says his wife. The Alpine task force is currently on its way to clarify this.

The summit book on the Benediktenwand will also be examined. Should Freiheit have entered his name there - "preferably with day and time,"according to Rohrhofer - another piece of the path could be traced. The next stop on the hike would have been Voderriß.

"He had booked an overnight stay there," says Rohrhofer. "He didn't get there, though." Of course, the police also tried to locate the Canadian's cell phone. Without success. "After a few days have passed since the disappearance, it is not surprising.

Update Saturday, 5pm:

There are no new findings in the case of Jeff Freiheit, who went missing. However, the police confirm on request that the 32-year-old is still being sought. The experienced hiker from Brandon in the Canadian province of Manitoba was on the Munich-Venice long-distance hiking trail of his dreams.

The last sign of life was on August 2nd. On this day Freiheit was headed from Brauneck towards Tutzinger Hütte and Benediktenwand. The next stage was to lead him to Vorderriß. There, however, he did not arrive at the accommodation he had booked.

Update Sunday, 6pm:

Where's Jeff David Freiheit? Police and Lenggrieser Bergwacht searched for the missing Canadian on Saturday and Sunday. Until the late afternoon of Sunday without results, according to police. The 32-year-old had set off in Munich on July 31 to hike from there to Venice. Last seen August 2 at Brauneck. There's been no sign of him since.

"On Saturday, the police helicopter flew from Brauneck to the Benediktenwand several times in both directions and at different altitudes," reports Police Commissioner Fritz Schwarm. "They haven't found anything." Also the hope that Freiheit had entered his name in the summit book of the Benediktenwand was not fulfilled, according to Schwarm. Bad luck was that the summit book had been replaced on August 5. So the landlord of the Tutzinger Hütte had to search for the old one first. But also there: no entry.

On Sunday, the Alpine police task force and the Lenggries mountain rescue service deployed in several search teams to search for the missing person at the foot of the ridge in crevasses and under ledges. In the current weather with not too low temperatures, Schwarm believes it is quite possible that the man, if he has fallen and was injured, has survived until today. Jeff David Freiheit's wife and mother also arrived in Bad Tölz at the weekend.

Update Monday, 9.30 a.m:

The search for the missing Canadian Jeff Freiheit will continue on Monday. Already on Sunday the mountain rescue services Lenggries, Bad Tölz, Penzberg, Benediktbeuern and Wolfratshausen were on the road with more than 60 personnel in the area between Brauneck-Bergbahn and Benediktenwand. Also 4 search dogs of the Dog Squadron Hochland as well as two helicopters of police and federal police were in action and the drone of the Penzberg mountain rescue service.

"Despite the heat, we managed to search a very large area in a relatively short time. Thanks to the numerous emergency forces and a meaningful composition of the individual teams of local mountain rescue workers and dog handlers," says Till Gudelius of the Lenggrieser Bergwacht. Unfortunately without success.

At nightfall, the police and mountain rescue service decided to stop the search. Now the GPS trackers, which each search party has carried along, are evaluated. "Thanks to the Penzberg special task force for technology, it is possible to cover exactly those areas in which we have already searched," explains Sylvia Frei, spokeswoman of the Lenggrieser Bergwacht. This avoids that areas are searched twice, others not at all.

The terrain is very rugged in many places. Grooves and ditches that are difficult to access run under the Achselköpfe "With the GPS evaluation we can search again purposefully at the places, that the emergency forces did not reach yet," according to Frei.

Update Monday, 10:53 a.m:

Police are announcing the current state of the investigation: A testimony from Sunday evening suggests the conclusion that after spending the night at the Tutzinger Hütte at the foot of the Benediktenwand Jeff Freiheit actually set off for Vorderriß on August 3 as planned. On Monday, the search measures will therefore now concentrate on the Jachenau Vorderriß area. The restaurant Post in Vorderriß was the next destination after the route plan of the Canadian known here. However, according to current knowledge, he did not arrive there. In addition to the mountain rescue service, police helicopters (Bavaria/Federal Police) and officials of the Alpine Task Force will also be involved in the search operation on Monday. "A large praise is to be given here to the mountain rescue service for their engaged and professional actions", so Andreas Rohrhofer, deputy inspection leader of the Tlzer police. The mountain rescue services of Lenggries, Benediktbeuern, Kochel and Penzberg are among those involved. Also rescue and avalanche dogs of the mountain rescue service are in action.

Search for Canadian Jeff Freiheit - Update Monday, 6pm:

The search on Monday did not bring the hoped-for success either. Around 4 p.m. the action was stopped. 40 Mountain rescue forces of Lenggries, Benediktbeuern, Bad Tölz, Wolfratshausen and Penzberg as well as 4 search dogs of the dog squad Hochland and one police dog were deployed. "The task force was able to search an extremely large area on the second day as well. Unfortunately not with the hoped-for success," according to Sylvia Frei, spokeswoman of the Lenggrieser Bergwacht. However, the action did not remain entirely without discovery: the helpers discovered two pieces of clothing. These are now being examined by the police to determine whether they are the missing person's T-shirt and jacket. "We do not remain inactive during this time. Thanks to Penzberg's special task force technology, we now have the opportunity to evaluate the GPS trackers that each search party carried with them. "We'll put the records on a map so we can find any gaps." The search should then be repeated to cover all gaps. When that will be, however, has not yet been determined. In consultation with the police, the search for the missing person will continue.

Wife, mother of missing Brandon hiker travel to Germany to help with search | CBC News
The wife and mother of a Brandon man who went missing last week while hiking in the Alps have flown to Germany to be closer to the exhaustive search underway for him.

German police officers and search and rescue crews spent the weekend scouring a roughly five-kilometre wide ridge of rugged hiking trail located just north of the Austrian border searching for Jeff Freiheit, according to the man's wife.

"Jeff’s sister, Amanda Devigne, tells CTVNews.ca that Freiheit may have been spotted at a shop in the town of Jachenau on Aug. 3, but rescuers completed a search of the area between the Jachenau and Vorderriss on Monday that turned up nothing. She said that articles of clothing found in the area turned out not to belong to him.

Devigne says her brother “knows what he’s doing” having hiked to Mount Everest’s base camp and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

“He’s out there alone and hurt and scared or he’s not alive,” she said through tears over the phone from Winnipeg. “Both options are terrifying.”

Devigne said she’s hoping other hikers will remember Jeff and contact his wife Selena Freiheit or call the police in Bad Tolz, Germany.

Search for Canadian Jeff Freiheit - Update Tuesday, 12.35 pm:

There is no new information on the whereabouts of the Canadian hiker Jeff Freiheit, who has been missing for days in the Isarwinkel. The garments found on Monday between Jachenau and Vorderriß probably do not belong to the 32-year-old, Andreas Rohrhofer, deputy head of inspection of the Tölz police, confirms on request. On Thursday, the Alpine task force, the police officer and the mountain rescue service will meet again to discuss what can still be done. By then, the GPS trackers that the mountain rescuers had with them during the searches between Saturday and Monday have also been evaluated. They can be used to check very closely whether there are gaps that still need to be searched. But it seems unlikely that there are large blind spots. "Actually everything has been searched," Rohrhofer says .

The search for the Canadian has aroused much public interest. The police received a corresponding amount of information. "We still have a few tips to work through," says Rohrhofer. One whistle-blower said he saw Freiheit in the Lenggries beer tent on Friday, another reported a sighting in Bolzano, Italy. Everything will be checked, saccording to Rohrhofer.

Bolzano / Bozen is not on the trail itself. If JF has walked on and remained under the radar, he'd be on Day 15 of his trek and that would put him east of Bolzano as the crow flies. It is very odd that they haven't found him.

What a sad instagram! these lovely pictures, great beer included and then the missing posters....

So he was walking very fast and he looks heated in the last video. A medical emergency would be a possibility, between the Jachenau and Vorderriss, but if so, why hasn't he been found?
The two previous days, he made a video when he was on his way, he did not do that on August 3, or maybe he did, but he didn't post it.

Surely more people must have seen him, the weekend was 4 & 5 August, there must have been even more hikers around. Wonder if they have found where his phone last pinged.

'We just need to find him': Manitoba teacher missing in Germany

This is interesting. The article links to the instagram of JF and to the FB of his wife.
On Monday she posted an article from the German press. In the comments, someone is surprised because the path from Tutzinger Hütte to Vorderriss is quite easy. And JF will be easier to find.

Another poster writes that he knows the area well and that the weather is so good you might even sleep outside, and soak in some gullies in the rivers though this is not without danger.

So there we go.

JF wasn't found in an area where he would have been easy to find. Let's assume he wasn't found because he wasn't there. In fact, because the track from Tutzinger Hütte to Vorderriss is so easy, he arrived early in Vorderriss.

Two options. One, JF stayed the night in Vorderriss and something went wrong with the registration.
Or, because it was still early and the weather was good, he hiked on and slept under the stars. (From what I've seen he is carrying a sleeping bag).
He does not carry a solar charger (that I've seen) so he cannot charge his mobile and he cannot upload pictures nor contact home.

Conclusion from this scenario: Whatever happened to JF, happened after Vorderriss, and they need to move the search southwards.

In the most optimistic version of this scenario, JF is sleeping rough, he has enough cash to pay for food and as long as the weather stays good, he will not check into a hotel, at least not until he arrives in Belluno.

Search for Canadian Jeff Freiheit - Update Wednesday, 12.20 pm:

The family of missing Canadian Jeff Freiheit has formed a Facebook group. "Volunteers searching for JEFF FREIHEIT" is the name given to volunteers who want to help in the search for the 32-year-old. Furthermore, Selena, the wife of Freiheit, doubts that her husband was seen in Jachenau on the morning of August 3. To the best of her knowledge, the witness merely claimed to have seen someone in the 32-year-old's cap. But there is no personal description. The Canadian's cap is quite memorable: it bears the large inscription: "Ernie Freiheit".

According to Freiheits wife, the 32-year-old wore the white version of the cap when he left Lenggries for Brauneck on August 2. And this is exactly what the witness claims she saw the next day in Jachenau. But it would also be quite possible that Freiheit lost his cap somewhere on the way and another wanderer picked it up, at least that's what Freiheit's brother-in-law Nick suspects. The family is convinced that the 32-year-old never arrived at the Tutzinger Hütte at the foot of the Benediktenwand. There are only confirmations for reaching the Brauneck mountain station (photo on Instagram) and a stop in the Tölzer hut. A couple is said to have seen Freiheit at Latschenkopf between 11 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. on August 2.

The family therefore believes that the Canadian has disappeared somewhere between Latschenkopf and Tutzinger Hütte. This area had already been searched by about 60 mountain rescue service and Alpine Police Task Force volunteers during the weekend.

If someone found that cap, picked it up and wore it, let's hope this person comes forward. IMHO the cap does not look like something you lose easily when wearing it ~ as it should be ~ so how would JF have lost it?

Search for missing Brandon teacher continues
Aslo on Wednesday, 13 days after Freiheit went missing, Selena noted on her Facebook page that a group page called “Volunteers searching for JEFF FREIHEIT” had been established. It is primarily focussed for volunteers on the ground helping look for the Brandonite, however.

“This group is almost entirely composed of people from the area in Germany. When you share my last post, people from the area will be able to join the group. Some of these members are already actively searching for Jeff even though it was only formed yesterday,” she wrote.

Search for Canadian Jeff Freiheit - Update Thursday, 1.15 pm:

Once again the mountain rescue service and police will go in search of the missing hiker Jeff Freiheit. The Tölz officials are currently organising the operation for Friday, 17 August. "The area between Brauneck and Benediktenwand will be searched," according to Andreas Rohrhofer, deputy Tölzer inspection manager. They had already searched there, but they want to play it safe. But why did you choose this area? "The only thing that is 100% certain at the moment is that Jeff Freiheit took out money on August 2 in Lenggries and was at the Brauneck mountain station," says Rohrhofer. The latter is proven by a video that the Canadian uploaded to Instagram. All indications of later whereabouts are not absolutely certain.

However, further indications have also been received which are still being processed. On Friday there will probably be 20 men from the mountain rescue service, 7 police forces including dog and helicopter on site.

A misunderstanding between the Tyrolean and Tölz police has been cleared up. The Austrian colleagues - there Freiheit's wife Selena had reported her husband missing - had sent the Tölzer photos showing the Tutzinger Hütte and the ropeway there. Due to a misunderstanding, the colleagues assumed that the pictures were taken by Freiheit, says Rohrhofer. This was another reason why it was assumed that the 32-year-old made it as far as the Tutzinger Hütte. Only later it turned out that these were general pictures from an unnamed source.
