Ande Fan?

Ande Fan – The Charley Project

It's the Catholic medal that stands out for me - unfortunately there is no other information on what he was wearing when he went missing. I wish the jacket and shirt size was mentioned that would be a big help too.

I'm curious about the clothing sizes too so I busted out a standard forensic scale similar to the one they used in the photo of the jacket and measured a couple of my husband's jackets. Very rough estimation here but the bottom of the UID's jacket looks about 48-50 cm wide, which correlates most closely with the size medium jackets I measured.

This guy went missing in June. Seems unlikely he’d be wearing a winter coat?

I'd agree with you, however, the last few years I have noticed people will wear long sleeves and coats in the middle of the summer. Even when it's 80 degrees and various ages from middle school age to senior citizens.

From his Charley Project profile:

  • Medical Conditions: Fan has bipolar disorder and other medical problems, and may be in need of medical attention.
  • Distinguishing Characteristics: Asian male. Black hair, brown eyes. Fan's left kneecap was injured at the time of his disappearance. His nickname is Andy and some agencies give his name as "Andre." He was born in China.
I am guessing he could not have walked too far if that is him, it's about 6 hour drive from New Haven to Harpers Ferry, WV. Maybe hitched a ride with the wrong person? or abducted?

No other updates yet to this story?

West Virginia state troopers, the United States Park Police, lue Ridge Search and Rescue Volunteer Team, and the Medical Examiner responded to the scene, where they recovered human remains and the clothing of an uknown person.

Police said the body had on a blue ‘Montgomery Ward’ dress shirt, red jacket with a stripe across the chest, elastic cuffs and waistband, white Puma shoes (high-tops, size 10) and a necklace with an image of ‘Saint Mary’ and the following saying: ‘O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.’

On Friday, April 10, police say they conducted a more extensive search of the area where the remain were found and recovered more clothing and items, including a white sock with three red rings and a crucifix.

Investigation is ongoing to try to identify the person. If you have any information about the investigation, you're asked to contact Trooper First Class M.C. Morgan or Sergeant Chumley at 304-725-9779 or 304-725-9770.” (BBM)

“Around 6:15 a.m. Saturday [the day after he left home], a North Carolina woman vacationing on Virginia Beach saw a man take off his shirt, shorts and socks and go swimming in the ocean, [Tom’s father Rich] Duesterhaus said. When she returned to her porch, the man was gone, but his bag remained on the beach. When it was still there midday, the woman went with her husband to investigate. They found some of Tom's property and reported it to Virginia Beach Police. When she returned home to North Carolina, she used the information she reported to police to search the Internet, and found Rich Duesterhaus.

It wasn't unusual for Tom to be on the beach, his father said. As a graduate of the College of William and Mary, Tom found solace in the Virginia Beach area and often went there to clear his head. Tom was also scheduled to be at a four-day retreat starting Monday, so going down early, in a way, made sense.

But the bag the woman found didn't have Tom's credit card, keys or cell phone in it. Because Police have not found his car, Rich Duesterhaus believes his son may be sleeping in it on the road. Rich said his son's credit card hasn't been used to buy food or gas since he went missing; his cell phone hasn't made or received any texts or calls, nor has he returned any from family.

On Sunday, Youth Apostles [a Catholic organization, of which Tom was a member] combed Virginia Beach, showing hundreds of people a poster with Tom's picture on it. Rich Duesterhaus says they found two people who had seen Tom on Sunday — both times near homeless shelters.

’He oftentimes worked with service projects and taking kids to homeless shelters,’ Rich Duesterhaus said. ’He might seek refuge that way himself.’” (BBM)

“An automobile associated with former Bishop O'Connell High School teacher Tom Duesterhaus, who has been missing for six weeks, was found Thursday in a commercial parking garage near the Rosslyn Metro station, Duesterhaus' family reported.

The car had been parked in the garage since June 17, the day he disappeared, according to his father, Rich.

[SBM]

Lucy Balsten, who is Duesterhaus' sister, said attendants at the parking garage finally noticed the car and called police. A security camera tape later showed Duesterhaus parking the car and walking away, she said.

[SBM]

Balsten said the discovery of Duesterhaus' car means he likely hitchhiked or used cash to take a bus to Virginia Beach.“

So it does appear that Tom most likely did go to Virginia Beach since some of his property was found there, and probably did not return to Rosslyn after that, but ... if he did, public transportation is available from Rosslyn Metro to Harpers Ferry, WV (trying to find out if it was back in 2011):

That crucifix does look really similar. Both the UID's and Tom's are on the larger/"chunkier" side.

The whole outfit screams 80s to me but it's tough because so much of that stuff has come back into style more recently. Puma high-tops are pretty trendy at the moment. The Montgomery Ward shirt definitely gives me pause because it's been so long since they stopped making them, but I'm sure there's still plenty of them around in thrift stores. With Tom's age, it's also possible he could've bought a MW shirt in the late 80s-90s and just held on to it for a very long time.

Edit: I have a pair of similar striped tube socks that I bought from a rather trendy store back in 2011.

I found another picture of Tom wearing what appears to be the same necklace, and I do not believe it’s a crucifix, but rather, a cross. The article the picture accompanies is dated April 27, 2011, not even two months before he went missing:

Tom sounds like an interesting, all in all great human being, IMO. And I do not believe the remains belong to him.

IMO, the shoes seem too small to be Tom's. He was 6'3" tall and the shoes are only a size 10. He could have had unusually small feet, but I think it would have been noted. He sounds like the right type of guy to be this UID, though.

This post confused me (I didn't realize it was possible to quote a post from another thread like this). The quoted material in the post #10 comes from this thread: MA - MA - Simone Ridinger, 17, Sherborn, 2 Sept 1977

It's quite simple to do. You can bring forward a post from a previous thread by hovering over the # (permalink) in the original post that you want to quote. Found at the bottom right corner of the post, if you hover over the #icon, then right click, select "copy link" and then paste the link into the active thread. Sometimes helpful if discussion harkens back a thread or two.

What about Walter Grant? Homeless man who disappeared in 1992. He would frequent homeless shelters and "open door mission-type establishments." His clothing and accessories match (A button-down shirt, blue jeans, size 10 1/2 shoes and a gold-colored crucifix). The only question would be how he got from Lincoln, NE to Harpers Ferry, but it's only a day or two by car or bus.

Walter Sidney Grant – The Charley Project

Walter wore dentures and there's no mention of dentures being found with the UID. Of course they could have been lost, but with the skull they should be able to determine rather quickly whether or not the person had all of their teeth, and if any missing teeth were lost pre- or post-mortem.

The crucifix in each picture looks very similar to me, too.

I read a bit about Tom's case and it sounds very sad to me - losing his job, something he clearly very much loved.

There's no mention of pants being found either, and it took an extra search to find the sock and crucifix. Makes me think the amount of time/elements/animal activity has really disrupted the remains. They haven't given any details about the skull yet, but yes, it would be very easy to rule in or out. I think I'm going to wait a few days for more info to hopefully be released before calling.

I'm not finding anything that states that they don't think this is Morte. Until I find that information, I still believe it's probably him. I understand, from what I've read, that he wasn't religious so this couldn't be him because of the religious jewelry found. MOO, I don't think it's a valid point. I am not Christian, but my late parents were. I have my mom's cross pendant that she wore and carry it with me. Yes, I believe it can help identify him, because my close family and friends know I carry my Mom's pendant.

I'd like to know if this UID's teeth were intact. Morte had a very distinctive "gap" tooth smile. Plus, he at some point wore a similar coat, just different colors.

Nice catch on the distinctive smile. The "jacket" he's wearing in your first photo is actually a vest (not that it is important; I'm just being pedantic ). Something I noticed about the coat from the UID is that the color is kind of "Washington Redskins" colors. Red and gold are the colors; the coat looks to be red(dish) and tan. Still, Morte was a Redskins fan (per his FB).

Edited for clarity.
