A new view of Hurricane Dorian shows the layers of the storm, as seen by an experimental NASA weather satellite that’s the size of a cereal box. TEMPEST-D reveals rain bands in four layers of the storm as Hurricane Dorian approaches Florida on Sept. 3, 2019. The multiple vertical layers show where the strongest convective “storms” within the hurricane are pushing high into the atmosphere, with pink, red and yellow corresponding to the areas of heaviest rainfall.

Known as a CubeSat, TEMPEST-D (Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems Demonstration) uses a miniaturized version of a microwave radiometer – a radio wave instrument used to measure rain and moisture within the clouds. If TEMPEST-D can successfully track storms like Dorian, the technology demonstration could lead to a train of small satellites that work together to track storms around the world. CubeSats are much less expensive to produce than traditional satellites; in multiples they could improve our global storm coverage and forecasting data.

Thirteen weeks: that’s how long it takes to go through boot camp to be a Marine Corpsman, and that’s what North Dakota native Serene Wilkinson has been doing all summer at a training depot located at Parris Island, South Carolina.

Due to Hurricane Dorian, she was forced to evacuate and come home before her graduation — so her family and friends decided to bring a graduation ceremony to her.

The winds are howling here in Charleston South Carolina. I have lost power. I can hear debris hitting my house. All in all, doing okay for now.

Best wishes to all impacted, and their family and friends.
Please try to stay positive and most of all stay as safe as you possibly can and keep in contact for as long as you can so that we know you’re ok and if you are likely to lose power pls email mods with your address in the event that we need to get help out to you x God bless

Thank you for thinking of me. Several of my neighbors stayed behind as well, and they are checking in on me frequently. Prayers to everyone touched by this awful situation.

WATCHES AND WARNINGS
--------------------
CHANGES WITH THIS ADVISORY:

Island, Delaware, and also extended northward in the Chesapeake Bay
to Drum Point, including the Tidal Potomac River south of Cobb
Island.

The Storm Surge Warning has been discontinued south of Edisto Beach,
South Carolina.

Flight meteorologists released dropsondes to investigate the structure of the storm below. These probes detect atmospheric conditions as they fall down through the storm – something like a reverse weather balloon. This data is sent directly to the National Hurricane Center and is ingested into weather forecast models – significantly improving their accuracy.

The Hurricane Hunters fly a special grid pattern through the storm featuring several bumpy – sometimes really bumpy – trips through the eyewall and into the calm eye. Finding the exact center of the storm helps provide insight into where it could be headed next.

Twisters began spinning up in Dorian’s outer rain bands Thursday morning, causing damage in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Another tornado passed near Myrtle Beach shortly before sunrise. The National Weather Service has already logged more than five reports of tornadoes or waterspouts (which are tornadoes over water).

At 9:00 a.m., a large waterspout appeared just offshore of Emerald Isle, North Carolina. It is unclear it if made landfall as a tornado. The circulation strengthened about five miles inland northwest into Onslow counties, producing a tornado that tossed debris more than a mile high. Radar indications suggest it was uncharacteristically strong for a tornado spawned by a tropical cyclone.

The most likely locations for tornadoes will be within a county or two of the coast from near Charleston, S.C. to the North Carolina/Virginia border. Anyone north of Dorian’s eye should be prepared to seek shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued. Tropical cyclone-spawned tornadoes are known to develop very suddenly, and be very transient in nature. They’re also usually tough to see due to low cloud bases in hurricanes. The local National Weather Service offices have proven adept early Thursday in detecting the circulations, which ordinarily appear more subtly on radar than traditional tornadoes.
