Hi, I haven't seen this mentioned so please pardon if it's already been discussed. I'm thinking maybe LE is so fixated on the Elantra is because DNA would likely be present. Even if the killer washed or detailed the interior there's a chance blood evidence might be found. Unless scuba suit, booties etc the killer would probably have some amount of blood on them. Victims blood in the killer's car is great evidence towards a conviction. JMO

Almost sounds as if they have a specific car in their sights, and need a "tip" to place that known specifc car in the area to give probable cause to search it for DNA.

Lawyers please chime in: if they have a a specific suspect car in mind, and search it without iron clad probable cause, does that blow the whole case?

Could we be looking at a vehicle where roommates might have access, and they're not sure which of the roommates was driving that night? Could we be looking at roommates who actually committed the crime?

I guess there aren't any toll roads around there that might capture vehicles (like EZ-,pass in the eastern US). Does WA or ID LE commonly run ALPRS license plate scanners? Being in a relatively remote location with low-traffic back roads out of town makes this difficult. Maybe insurance companies could help find a covered matching vehicle within close proximity to the area?

Hopefully some valid tips have been submitted and it's down to simple brute force analysis by more eyes to find paydirt.

Btw, someone mentioned night vision equipment. Were there lights left on in the house? (Still on the following day when police searched the house? Would they even make note of that, since it was daylight when they arrived?) Kind of an odd little detail...moo

Qmfr, ran out of time on post to add as ETA, continued

I just watched the video of them walking home again, and Mickey Shunick’s case and the grainy surveillance video of the white truck following her riding her bike home from the bar popped in my head. That perp, BSL, just happened to see her, and it was a crime of opportunity iirc.

Obviously LE has already canvassed and watched any and all available footage in the first days right after the incident of their walk home, and I’m guessing they couldn’t see anyone following them home, otherwise if they did, I would think a suspect photo or vehicle photo would have been released.

So talking it out, I’m guessing the Mickey Shunick theory doesn’t work here, unless if this is the case, they maybe followed along a parallel route. Or there wasn’t much surveillance available.

Unless that’s where the white vehicle comes from, but that doesn’t like it is - they say it was reported in the area, and the NBC reporter said LE told her multiple people called that in.

So I guess they don’t have that actual vehicle on camera...? That seems odd to me, so as mentioned previously, why not release the photo/video of the vehicle if they have one?

So, maybe, they DO have the vehicle on camera, but it’s grainy and not useful for the public, but their forensic specialists and car manufacturers have been able to definitely identify the car as a white Elantra.

Maybe they’re not releasing that exact image, and just saying “in the area of” because they’re keeping where exactly the car was parked, and what route was taken, close to the vest, and keeping that detail private so if and when they have a suspect in custody, if he confesses, they can ask him where he parked, what route he took, and if that detail matches then that is one confirmation it really is him.

I feel like often in these cases LE really keeps some stuff close in anticipation of the scenario of false confessions. I was really surprised to learn about how often this has happened in the past with other cases, I’m like why on earth would someone to confess to something awful they didn’t do, but apparently it happens, how frequently I’m not sure, but I think that’s something they plan for.

But then if they knew the exact route, where it was parked, etc., wouldn’t they want to tell the public in case they saw anything?

Yeah so rambling now, I don’t know, so many possibilities and complexities here. I have to trust that whatever they’re saying and not saying, and releasing and not releasing, is for good reason.

How about the local department knew they needed hep and just used one of the above pro forma filing reasons to get it? It doesn't have to actually be one of those reasons for the local department to use them to satisfy the legal requirement to have feds come in and help. Some departments do not want help, but there is every reason to believe that these locals and the states wanted specialized help; and to get it would have had to assert the possibility if one of those reasons to get the FBI in there legally.
I have a question. Can FBI bring charges as well, or would that only be through the local department? I agree it is for extra help. I just wonder in general, if the crime crosses state lines are the FBI able to bring additional charges. I hope I worded that right. Thank you.

Here it is guys at about the 1:47 mark you can see police responding over labor day weekend to the house because of a noise complaint. 2 guys answer the door and say that they don't know who lives there. Police eventually figure it out and contact Madison. LE has way more videotape on this case then they are choosing to release to us. Be patient they say they are getting to the bottom of it.

I wonder if this vehicle has any significance or correlation to the Moscow Murders. Comments by Eugene Police Department in Oregon - “We are aware of it and have sent the vehicle information to Moscow Idaho. We will refer everybody to call Moscow Idaho police for any additional information.” ~EPD.

Eugene is approximately 8 hours from Moscow.

Not too far (about 60 miles) from the scene of that unsolved home invasion/stabbing near Salem?

When you go into a location with Wifi, if the login credentials have been saved to your phone (most automatically do)- you automatically connect (ping).
So when all victims came home, provided their phones were turned on and wifi was enabled- LE should have record of the exact times.
It's unclear to me why there has ever been any question about their arrival times, because of this.
Has this been addressed or does anyone have any thoughts on this?

IMO, The roommates were targeted meaning someone was aiming to kill them, but the killing itself may have been ‘spur of the moment” ( not premeditated).
This! With one of the roommates leaving soon for a whole new life, it would make a lot of sense. Like, the discussion may be this is our last chance if we want to do this. Just my thoughts with what we do know. IMO

If K was the target the big question is who knew she was going to be in town? Her mom said in an earlier interview that she was debating whether to go so it’s not like her visit was planned way in advance. I think that makes of much harder for the attack to be preplanned by someone watching from the woods. MOO.

UDPATE: Moscow PD PIO responded to my message about the white Hyundai found abandoned, with front-end damage and no license plates in Eugene, OR. He said "We are aware of the vehicle and investigators are working on it." @LawCrimeNetwork

Not sure if this has been brought up but in the Twitter link shared above where the police are called to an earlier noise complaint at the house there is a white vehicle as they walk up that looks exactly like the one they are looking for now. MOO.

True. However, I can totally see her texting friends to tell them she decided to come in. And once 1 or 2 know, more probably knew. Also, It is entirely plausible someone wanted this done, didn't have an exact plan, then decided it was time. So many probable scenerios it's really hard to narrow down.

1/4

Moscow, Idaho Police were called to the house where the murders happened back on September 1st for a noise complaint. You can hear music and partying when officers first walk up.

2/4

In this clip you can see inside one of the downstairs bedrooms as police walk around the outside of the house.

3/4

When two men open the door – they tell officers no one inside the house partying actually lives in the house.

4/4

Police eventually get Maddie Mogen on the phone.

And there is a white car parked out front that looks like the one in question.

That white car just seems to have vanished. Somebody in Moscow must recognize it? How is it possible no one knows who’s car it is?
There’s something unsettling about this whole white Hyundai Elantra situation. It’s going to have to be federal agents and law enforcement who find it, because it seems there’s been a series of wild goose chases concerning this vehicle, and nothing seems to be panning out.

K's father says the person who is discussed in a conversation reportedly recorded between K & M that evening is not a suspect
He could be correct <modsnip>. Whether they told him this a long time ago (since he said they’ve had it for awhile), that’s a possibility. But as of the past week or so, he probably is cut off from most information except the most trivial of items they think will placate his attorney’s and his thirst.

If you're referring to the noise complaint around 9/1, that was a Chevrolet.

have we confirmed how the girls actually came home and entered that night, seemed odd to enter back door upstairs you must walk over rocks and woods.

I’m behind on reading today, but I also believe this is why finding the Elantra is so important to this case. I believe LE has their person or persons of interest and they need evidence of the victims blood in that car to connect it to the murders. Blood and not just other DNA because it is harder to explain away. Moo.

This isn't a hypothetical that is possible to answer beyond "not necessarily." The answer to any question implicating the Fourth Amendment is going to be that it depends heavily on the circumstances and parameters of the search. Whether or not evidence is completely thrown out as a result of an improper search (and, assuming it is, if that would blow the case) depends on what they found and how they found it.

If I suspected critical evidence was going to be found in a car, I would want to get a search warrant for extra protection. That said, I was a prosecutor in really not rural Idaho. There are a lot of factors that go into that decision that I can't fully analyze without all of the facts of the case and an understanding of Idaho criminal procedure/practice.
