Smollett's attorneys, Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes, issued the following statement Tuesday:

"'Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him. Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29th. He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgement.'"

"'Jussie and many others were hurt by these unfair and unwarranted actions. This entire situation is a reminder that there should never be an attempt to prove a case in the court of public opinion. That is wrong. It is a reminder that a victim, in this case Jussie, deserves dignity and respect. Dismissal of charges against the victim in this case was the only just result."

"Jussie is relieved to have this situation behind him and is very much looking forward to getting back to focusing on his family, friends and career."

Statement from Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office:

"'After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett's volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case," the Cook County State's Attorney's Office said in a statement Tuesday.'"

"Smollett had posted $10,000 bond to be released from jail after he was arrested in late February."

Basically, “this happens all the time, but quick, find the cases that illustrate that this happens all the time.”

CBS 2 has obtained an internal email from the Cook County State's Attorney's Office regarding a search for felony cases dropped under similar circumstances to the Jussie Smollett case.

We are looking for examples of cases, felony preferable, where we, in excersing [sic] our discretion, have entered into verbal agreements with defense attorneys to dismiss charges against an offender if certain conditions were met, such as the payment of restitution, completion of community service, completion of class, etc., but the defendant was not placed in a formal diversion program,” the email states.

BREAKING: Two law enforcement officials briefed on the matter tell @ABC the FBI is *reviewing* circumstances surrounding dismissal of criminal charges against Jussie Smollett. ABC News is told this is not an investigation. It is a "review" or "inquiry".

MORE: As the @ABC7Chicago I-Team revealed this morning, records obtained from the Chicago police file on the Smollett case show the FBI was already involved in part of the investigation. 1/2

In that report it was revealed that CPD forwarded a copy of a search warrant pertaining to Jussie Smollett’s Apple iCloud account to an FBI analyst. 2/2

This whole thing stinks of subterfuge, and has been rotten from day one.

I guess after all the publicity/media attention, the public will be told to "move along, cuz there's nothing to see here".

So much for transparency and "Lady Justice" being blind. It feels like the Twilight Zone!!:eek:

IMHO, this is setting a dangerous precedent.

Just a ? Does double jeopardy come into this case at all if the FBI decides to rule on the letter? Or can JS be charged with something else? Just curious.

No double jeopardy as they are separate crimes under different jurisdictions.

The federal investigation regarding the letter, has no bearing on the crimes in which he was charged for in Chicago.

And that’s along the lines of what justice looks like. Weak punishment, but it was something.

    Far cry here.

There is a number of other hoax cases similar to this where the accused only got community service and a fine. Those cases did not get attention towards the sentencing like this.

    like:
    Breana Harmon
    Nicole Marie Hosmer
    Rachael Mattice

oh and Jacob Wohl did the same and wasnt charged

This did not set the precedent.

This one got the attention it did now because that’s the attention it has received all along.

Back when people took this crime at face value, it led all the nightly news broadcasts and had prime time cable news coverage.

It wasn’t just national, it was global.

That coverage hasn’t waned, because interest hasn’t dissipated.

People are mad at being lied to.

I get that, but its the same crime. Precedent shows this is the kind of punishment it receives. No celebrity should get special treatment, good or bad. So why do people want him put away for life for something other people continuously get fines/community service for.

Oh, I certainly don’t feel that he should be punished any differently.

I said that in the previous thread.

Typically, these crimes involve a guilty plea, probation, and restitution.

    That would have been fine.

What doesn’t sit well, is the justice system showing favoritism in the form of all charges being dropped, despite the overwhelming amount of evidence here.

Yes and she apologized and was ordered to pay back the money the police used to investigate the crime, in addition to the fine.

JS continues to lie and hasn't made restitution.
