Nathan Carroll Takes the Stand in the Murder Trial of Bonnie Woodward

Special Prosecutor Jennifer Mudge called Nathan Carroll to the stand. Nathan was 16 when the murder happened. Mudge asked Nathan Carroll about his childhood growing up. Nathan said to the jury that he knew Bonnie Woodward stepdaughter Heather Woodward from his church.

He also said it was Roger Carroll’s idea for Heather to run away and move with them. During his testimony, Nathan said his dad said several times: "Bonnie must go away."

Nathan was granted immunity for his testimony.

Heather testified that after she ran away from home and she went to a teacher's house and hid. She said she stayed there until Bonnie came looking for her then she called Roger and Monica Carroll and she went there and stayed

The fragments were sent to university experts who said two of the fragments were not from Woodward and the others were so degraded by fire or so small that no DNA evidence could be extracted. Davis did not explain the origin of the fragments that were not linked to Woodward

Golike said when he interviewed Roger Carroll in 2010, Carroll claims he had never met or talked to Bonnie Woodward or was located at Bonnie’s car. He told Golike he must have been framed because there is no way "my prints were found all over that car.

The prosecution asked Davis if the bone fragments, key, and button found in the search could be prehistorical and he said: “no it was not prehistorical and it was forensic.” He also said the condition of the bones indicated that a significant fire had burned the bones

The jury took four hours to deliberate. Circuit Judge Eric Pistorius on Monday ordered a pre-sentencing report for Roger Carroll and set a sentencing date of April 27.

Roger Carroll was sentenced in October to 65 years in prison for killing Bonnie Woodward in rural Jersey County. He was transferred to Menard Correctional Center in Chester Illinois to serve his time. [snip] Carroll is eligible for parole on 04/16/2083.
