Perry (6) (was last seen in Skokie with his 16-year-old sister at her friend’s home around 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, reported missing Jan. 5, 2022, Chicago & found deceased late Friday night Jan. 7, 2022 near an abandoned house in the 700 block of Van Buren St. in Gary; in truth Damari died on Dec. 30, 2021 during a punishment from his “mom”; killed on his 6th birthday) – *Jannie M. Perry (38/now 42) “mom” arrested (1/7/22) & charged (1/8/22) with 1st degree murder, obstructing justice (because of fake “story”) & concealment of a homicidal death. Indicted & recharged (2/2/22) & arraigned (2/18/22) with 1st degree murder, aggravated battery of a child, dismembering a human body, conspiracy, aggravated domestic battery, concealment of a homicidal death, endangering the life or health of a child, abuse of corpse, obstructing justice & failure to report the death or disappearance of a child under 13 yrs. Old. Plead not guilty. $5M bond. Lake County
Plead guilty to 1st degree murder & had other charges dismissed on 12/4/25. Sentencing hearing on 4/2/26.

*Jeremiah R. Perry (20/now 24) “brother” – Case Management hearing on 4/14/26 & trial set to begin on 5/4/26.
*Juvenile (16/now 20) “brother” arrested (1/7/22) who is also believed to be responsible for his death, faces charges in Lake County’s Juvenile Court in Waukegan. Has not been named. Lake County Juvenile Court.

Lake County Judge Christopher Lombardo sentenced Perry to 45 years in the IDOC following a sentencing hearing held on Thursday afternoon.


Before being sentenced, Perry gave a very brief statement of allocution where she apologized and said that she has been a mother for over 20 years but that it “doesn’t come with a manual.”


"Two North Chicago police officers testified during the hearing and prosecutors also played two videos for the judge.


One of them was only a few seconds and showed Damari’s sister knocking his head against the kitchen counter after catching the boy in the garbage.

The second video was several minutes long and showed a phone setup to catch Damari “stealing” crackers.

Both videos, which showed the boy naked with his hands tied behind his back, were texted to the mother, who responded by saying she was so sick of the “disgusting skeleton.”

Damari was reported missing in by family members in Jan. 2022. The family told police he had gone to a party with his sister in Skokie. Jannie Perry claimed Damari and his teenage sister were driven from North Chicago to Skokie by a man and a woman, the teen had "several" drinks and then fell asleep, and when she awoke her brother and the man were gone.

But police in North Chicago later determined that story was "completely false." Damari's body was found several days later, 70 miles away and across state lines in Gary, Indiana.

Perry and two of Damari's siblings were charged with murder and obstruction of justice.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Service confirmed they'd had prior contact with the family before Damari's death.

Prosecutors said on Dec. 30, 2021, Damari had taken food from the trash at the Perry family's home, which upset his mother and other relatives. As punishment, Damari was put in a cold shower for an extended period of time. When he became unresponsive, prosecutors said none of the relatives tried to get him medical help. Instead, they drove his body to Indiana, burned it and left him near an abandoned garage.
