Deputy Police Chief Tom Keane said Thursday authorities are continuing to follow leads, but they lack suspects.

Two weeks after Rhoni Reuter was shot to death in her Deerfield home, family members say they remain optimistic her killer will be caught.

"We have a positive attitude. We believe this person is going to be found," Rhoni's younger brother, Thad Reuter, said Wednesday.

Coping with the loss is taking an emotional toll on family members as they wait for answers about the puzzling Oct. 4 slaying that took the life of a woman who was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first child.

Deerfield police have arrested Marni Kay Yang, 41, in connection with the deaths of Rhoni Reuter and her daughter, Skylar, in October 2007.

Yang once was romantically involved with Gayle, according to sources, who believe the motive for the killing was jealousy.

The Lake County State's Attorney's office has charged Yang, of the 5000 block of North St. Louis Avenue, with two counts of murder, police said.

Very rarely do I think someone is truly crazy. This one might be it. She set up another woman to look like the possible killer, has a history of weird behavior and harassment. A casual conversation that quickly turned to the subject of murder as two old friends ate soup led to the arrest of the prime suspect in the slaying of Rhoni Reuter, the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle, investigators said Thursday.

A female friend of suspect Marni Yang's asked Yang to meet her Sunday at a northwest suburban restaurant, then secretly recorded their conversation, said police, who offered new details about a pivotal moment in the case.

The conversation quickly veered to Reuter's slaying, Deerfield Deputy Police Chief Rick Wilk said.

Investigators knew about the 9 mm handgun, rental car and disposable cell phones allegedly used in a cold-blooded plot to kill the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle.

But none of it was enough to make an arrest. Police desperately wanted to hear Marni Yang, their prime suspect, describe how Rhoni Reuter was gunned down in a Deerfield condominium.

After seven often frustrating months of preparation, a 40-hour training course and court orders approving electronic bugging, authorities said they finally got what they needed as they eavesdropped on Yang's cell phone calls with a close friend.

I noticed Sean Gayle had given a news conference a few months ago, and denied a romantic relationship with Yang, making it sound like she had an obsession with him. What seemed sad to me, watching Dateline last night, was that Yang's own son believed her capable of killing Rhoni.

I was also wondering where Yang's children have been since her arrest ~ are they with their father? I feel so sorry for them.

Marni Yang will spend the rest of her life behind bars for the 2007 jealousy-fueled slaying of Rhoni Reuter, the pregnant girlfriend of ex-Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle.

There was a lot of press for the attempt by Marni Yang's family to get her a new trial or have her exonerated. A big press conference featuring her children and father and a team of forensic experts. It is hard to believe that this is being brought back up again.
