I cant open the links. Do we know how many other females (only females?) were asked to get in this black car? And if so did they feel weird and refuse? Can they give a description of the driver?

Investigators are also looking into reports of a black vehicle whose driver invited other young women into the car. They've talked to one person who reported a similar encounter in another west Urbana neighborhood in early June.

Ms. Zhang inside the Teal line bus.

Ok, I was finally able to drive by this area on my lunch hour. At the exact corner where Yingying was standing, there is a small MTD bus sign that indicates it is the 22 Illini bus stop, which takes you to One North apartment complex. She got off the Teal when she realized it wouldn't take her to the complex (or was just transferring buses) and was waiting there for the 22 Illini.

The FBI missing page has only two people listed as Kidnapped in 2017. One is a guy who was kidnapped in Afghanistan, and the other is Yingying. https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/kidnap

It would appear the FBI has little doubt she was kidnapped by the driver of that black sedan.

Thank you so much for looking into all of this.

At this point, I am of the belief that Yingying was fully intending on getting on the 22 Illini bus in order to get to One North apartments. I also believe she did not order an Uber or a Lyft, making it even more difficult to identify the driver of the perp. I am also of the opinion that he the pulled up next to her with the sole intent of luring her into his vehicle for nafarious purposes, perhaps by offering her a ride.

It disturbs me that at least one person has been interviewed about "a similar encounter in another west Urbana neighborhood in early June." The last day of finals at UIUC for the spring semester was May 12, with the first summer session classes starting three days later, and second session on June 12th. There aren't nearly as many students on campus during the summer as the rest of year, making it easier for someone to commit a crime without raising suspicion -whether stealing a car or snatching someone-, IMO.

Hi all, I just want to highlight two webpages that might be useful.

This news article has a map showing her known locations and the apartments she was trying to get to: http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2017-06-15/fbi-joins-search-missing-ui-scholar.html

It seems quite likely she got off the bus to transfer to another bus to finish her journey in my opinion before the car shows up and she gets in.

The second page is from the University of Illinois Police: http://police.illinois.edu/search-updates/

They are posting updates here.

While I am not a local now, I am very familiar with this area and I have some family/friends in the area. Scary!

I believe I have found a Lyft driver whose car has a similar interior to an Astra. The interior is king of sleek-looking. I can only see his back seat and back doors in the photo.

The FBI plans to post information about Zhang on billboards across Illinois and in the Indianapolis and St. Louis areas through an agreement with an outdoor advertising company, Wade said.

Zhang, who is from Jianyang, China, was working in the University of Illinois' Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, researching photosynthesis and crop productivity.

Maybe this is naive, but what is the process for LE to legally check car registrations from the DMV and question car owners? It it especially time-consuming or complicated to do so? Because checking for guys who live in Urbana and own a black Saturn Astra, which as another poster pointed out was only manufactured for one year and is therefore super rare, seems like it would be pretty easy?

I've been pondering this as well. Some possibilities I came up with are: the car is from out of area and they either don't have a license plate number or the plates are stolen; or the car itself is stolen. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

Wow! Have you called this in? If you don't mind, could you share how you were able to find this specific Lyft driver?

I didn't report it. I'm just not sure if it's an Astra. But I found it on Facebook. There is a group for Champaign-Urbana Lyft drivers. Lots of members. Including a short list of admins.

My thinking on this is that the perp stole the car, then stole plates from a different vehicle, which he put on the car.

In this scenario, it's quite possible that the car belongs to someone affiliated with UI who is from out of state or abroad, in which case it still wouldn't be that difficult for LE to identify the legitimate owner. The identification process would likely be made even easier if the car has been reported stolen to local LE, but students and faculty members often leave their vehicles behind while they do internships/ fellowships, go on research trips, etc. for the summer, too. It's also possible the car is registered with the university, an apartment complex, etc. for parking purposes. Same concept can be applied to stolen plates.

Even if LE has found the legitimate owner of the Saturn Astra, unless there is a clear image that shows the perp in possession of it -and if LE has found such footage, I'm inclined to believe they would have have released it by now-, it would be difficult to find the driver, IMO. It's also possible the perp already had a second set of stolen plates even before kidnapping Yingying for post-abduction purposes.

More info on the Saturn Astra:
"General Motors predicted sales of between 30,000–40,000 vehicles a year in the United States. Sales were slow, due initially to a large glut of unsold Ions and later the uncertainty surrounding the Saturn brand's future. In 2008 only 11,968 were sold in the US and in 2009 this fell to 6,298.

(I)n 2010 General Motors discontinued the Saturn brand."

For comparison purposes, in 2008 a total of 351,007 units of Toyota Corolla -same class as Astra- were sold in the US, and in 2010 -the year it came out-, a total of 24,495 units of Chevrolet Cruze, also a compact class vehicle, were sold in the US.

I'm kind of unfamiliar with all of this as far as DMV cars and all that but what happens if the car isn't or never has been registered therefore it being driven illegally? Which then it wouldn't be traced back to anyone. Correct?

This case is horrible! I feel really scared for this girl. She was likely a very trusting person, who must have been so excited to be going to sign a lease for her own place. She probably thought the driver was going to help her. What should have been such a happy day for her ended up leading to this.

How frightened she must be if she's still alive. I hope we will soon read that she found a way to escape if she's being held, or that the driver got scared himself and released her. My heart is so heavy for her family...

Thanks to everyone for sharing their solid theories here. I imagine that quite a few people's opinions will turn out to be correct...

Thanks, that makes sense. I kinda think if someone was going through all that trouble though for the purposes of abducting girls, they'd also get a less identifiable/much more common car, like a Civic or something.

This is scary; I'm so worried for her and feel bad for the stress her family must be going through.

Security video shows Zhang getting into a black Saturn Hatchback on North Goodwin Avenue in Urbana on June 9.

The FBI says the vehicle circled the area before making contact with Zhang. They are examining her cellphone records, to see if she called for a ride.

I don't recall reading the part I bolded in any other articles. I definitely think this was a predator looking for prey. It reminds me of the Mickey Shunick case or Sierra Lamar. I hope this one somehow has a better outcome, but it's not looking good.
