IN IN - Marina Boelter, 18, Bloomfield, 31 December 2014

Details of disappearance updated:
Marina Pearl Boelter – The Charley Project

Boelter was last seen after getting off work at the IGA grocery store in Bloomfield, Indiana at 6:00 p.m. on December 31, 2014. She got into a silver, beige or gold 2009 to 2011 Mercury Milan with multi-spoke rims, a spoiler and a shark fin antenna at the top, driven by a middle-aged Caucasian male with glasses. They drove off in the direction of Boelter's apartment.

Boelter's companion, who has not been publicly identified, said she told him she would attend his house party later that evening, but she didn't want him to know where she lived and asked to be dropped off at a closed-down pizza restaurant. She has never been heard from again. When she failed to show up for work at the IGA the next day and missed a visitation with her young son, who was in foster care, she was reported missing. Her purse, phone and keys were missing from her home, and the rest of her belongings at her residence were undisturbed.

Boelter's ex-boyfriend, Douglas "D.J." Lockhart, who was the father of her son, was stabbed to death six weeks after her disappearance. Authorities stated they have found no evidence to suggest his murder was related to Boelter's disappearance.

The man who gave her a ride the night she disappeared has prior criminal convictions for abduction and rape, and a man who lived in her apartment building had once been convicted of torturing and murdering a young girl, but no suspects have been named in Boelter's case. Her disappearance remains unsolved.

"The man who gave her a ride the night she disappeared has prior criminal convictions for abduction and rape, and a man who lived in her apartment building had once been convicted of torturing and murdering a young girl."

What? Is this an Indiana thing or just completely mad neighbourhood?

Marina's case was featured on Still A Mystery last night on the ID channel. I imagine it will be replayed sometime soon.

Has Marina Boelter Been Found? Is She Dead or Alive?

I feel bad for her family that they have no answers.
This case seriously needs some public exposure. In the same state we have the Delphi murders tearing up the airwaves, newspapers, magazines, YouTube and podcasts. And here we have a missing young murder that barely gets a snippet of info being put out there. Don't get me wrong, Abigail Williams and Liberty German definitely deserve justice. But I have difficulty understanding why the state police are so mum on this case.

Marina Pearl Boelter is a young mother, daughter, sister, aunt, sister-in-law, and friend. Petite in stature but with a big personality, her mother, Tressie "Cricket" Palmer, affectionately referred to her as her "little tornado". Marina's favorite color is purple; she loved to write poems when she was young and became a prolific journaler as she grew into a young adult. Her sister-in-law and biggest advocate, Ashley Boelter, is married to Marina's brother David and remembers falling in love with Marina instantly the moment she met her at age 6.

At the time of her disappearance, Marina was working at the deli counter at the local IGA grocery store in Bloomfield, IN, but Marina had bigger goals in mind. She took the job at the deli as a first step on the road to her dream career of becoming a pastry chef. Smart and loving, she was a good student in her early years in Ohio but became less engaged with school after the move to Indiana. However, she'd earned her GED and was even planning on applying to colleges to achieve her dreams of a culinary career when she went missing. She had become a mom to Landen - her child with her on-again, off-again 20 year old boyfriend Douglas "DJ" Lockhart - in April of 2014, when she was just shy of 18. She was a very good mom, but an incident occurred at her home where Marina lived with her mother Tressie Palmer, father John Boelter, grandfather Craven Palmer, sister Faith Boelter, and other siblings. A fight between her sister Faith and her boyfriend resulted in the child being involved in a tragic accident, and Marina subsequently lost custody. Landen was placed in foster care, and the fight caused a rift in the family that stands to this day. However, Marina was on her way to regaining custody and was actually supposed to get Landen back right around the time she disappeared.

On New Year's Eve 2014, Marina was looking forward to celebrating a new year and excited about the party she would be attending later that evening. She'd had a rough year, but it seemed things were looking up. She had just moved into a new apartment in Bloomfield, IN and she was on track to regain custody of her 8 month old son Landen. Marina admittedly had some struggles with the men she became involved with. Landen's dad DJ Lockhart was said to be abusive at times, but Marina's mom was convinced they loved one another and Lockhart would never harm her. Though they were not together at the time of her disappearance, it was clear Lockhart still loved her and in fact, wanted her to go to a party with him on the night she vanished instead of the party she was planning on attending. That party was being hosted by Marina's current boyfriend Toby Deem, who Marina was secretly seeing. Deem was an older married man who also happened to be a close friend of the family, particularly of Tressie Palmer. He'd helped Marina get an apartment just a few blocks from his home and his business Deemon Cycles and also helped her move in. The party was being held at Deem's home and his wife was also hosting, but Marina was still looking forward to attending.

At about 6:00 pm after her shift at the deli counter on 12/31/2014, Marina got ready to leave, but Lockhart had come by and tried to talk her out of going to Toby Deem's party. He wanted Marina to attend a party with him instead, but Marina declined. In fact, she was on the phone with Deem when Lockhart appeared at the IGA, and she said "Oh , it's DJ" and told Deem she'd call him back, but she never did. Witnesses reported Marina and Lockhart having words, and Marina accepted a ride home from an unidentified man who was reportedly a frequent customer of the deli. Lockhart stated he observed Marina getting into a car with a heavyset, middle-aged man wearing glasses, at the old Sunoco gas station gravel parking lot directly north of the IGA where Marina worked. The car was described as a metallic colored (gold, silver, or beige) Mercury Milan manufactured between 2009 and 2011 with multi-spoke rims, a spoiler, and a Bluetooth or shark fin antenna on top. That was the last time anyone ever saw Marina; she did not show up at the party that evening as planned.

A good recap and it has some things I didn't know such Toby Deem and his party. However, I thought LE found the guy that gave Marina a ride and he told LE where he dropped her off in town. Seems like it was near a pizza restaurant that had been closed.

OK, after reading the linked article it mentions the guy who gave her a ride later on. More info that is new to me in that article such as more on Deem and her missing journals from her apartment.

Was hoping there had been some progress on this case, but more publicity and pressure could be the start of this. I remember Marina's story from listening to an interview on the Unfound podcast several years ago, I believe, with her mother, Tressie.
My guess is that this case is probably a simple scenario, the very familiar one of a young woman getting a lift from a male that she had no idea was terribly dangerous. Of course these men always say that they dropped the woman off, conveniently always where there is no-one else, no cameras to see them. The woman is never seen again.
But without physical evidence, Marina's blood in the car, and her body not being found which might have had other physical evidence to link to this very good suspect, the difficulty with prosecution is probably that there were at least two other suspect males, the violent ex and the nearby predator to create too much reasonable doubt. Very sad and frustrating, you have to wonder this is one of those cases where police are sure who did it but either due to mistakes or just not enough evidence being captured at the time, it won't get prosecuted yet.

Hi, everyone-
The pizza place was most likely Mill's Street pizza (formerly Joe's in 2014, the Grip's in 2019), which shutdown earlier in 2014. The pizza place was said to be close to her home and Vernon Briner lived next door. He was the only other person living in the complex, according to reports. So this would have been 702 S Seminary St, Apt C, Briner's old address (available because he is a registered sex offender). Marina would have been Apt D. This is right across the street from Mill's St. Pizza.

Briner moved in February 2015, as per the registered sex offender address base, to a home north of Bloomfield.

Follow-up on my last post:
Vernon Briner has a "rock-solid" alibi according to some articles. I followed-up, and it seems that he was at work. He has worked at the same place since Marina's disappearance. He would have to have been working 6 pm to about 12 am to be completely cleared, according to reports I have seen. The place he works has no known policies for New Years Eve hours, so unless police followed up diligently, there isn't much to prove he was at work on New Years Eve at those hours.

I have to emphasize again. He moved less than a month after Marina went missing. He was released from prison for murder of a woman around Marina's age (19 years old for his victim), and was released on Marina's birthday.

On New Year's Eve in 2014, Marina Boelter was seen leaving the IGA grocery store where she worked in Bloomfield, Indiana, around 6:00 p.m. D.J. Lockhart, Marina’s former boyfriend and father of her young son, was reportedly in the parking lot of the store at the time. He told police he saw the 18-year-old being driven away from the store by an older man. Just six weeks after Marina disappeared, D.J. Lockhart was found stabbed to death. Indiana State Police said, however, they have no evidence to suggest the two incidents are connected in any way. Marina’s family continues to search for her and posts updates on the Facebook page ‘Find Marina Boelter.’ In November 2022, an officer with the Indiana State Police Department told Dateline that Marina's case is still an active investigation. Marina is described as 5’3”, weighing 110 lbs., with blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a tattoo on her foot of a star with butterfly wings. If you have any information that can help bring Marina home, please contact the Indiana State Police at (812) 332-4411.
