IN - Ray Hanish, 49, strangled to death, poss. conn. to Nicole Bowen’s murder, Kentland, 17 Mar 2019

I struggle with the family being told he died of natural causes when there was clearly a "scene" at his home. Another questionable case handling.

just FYI -

On Nicole Bowen's case:

Re Garrett Kirts:
IN – Charles Ray Hanish (49) (March 17, 2019 found in his home, Reynolds) – suspect Garrett Kirts (21). White County
White County Prosecutor Bob Guy confirmed that he’s waiting for Kirts’ trial to wrap up in Newton County before filing any charges connected to Ray Hanish’s death in Reynolds. He declined to give many details, other than to say witnesses tied to the Newton County death of Nicole Bowen have cooperated in the White County investigation too. Alleged cause of death asphyxiation. Kirts will be sentenced on 1/11/21 for Nicole's case.

and
*Christopher Channing Mathis (27/now 28) – 9/18/20: Plead guilty & sentenced to time served (912 days). Out of jail. Cooperating with White County on Hanish case.

So we wait until after 1/11/21 for any movement on this case.

Correct Niner and thank you. However, per the family, they were initially told he died of natural causes. Per the description of his home being in shambles, and his death now being labeled homicide by asphyxiation, I question why natural causes was ever said.

Mathis is still attracting my attention, especially the conspiracy charge in the warrant. That was changed in the court doc to 2 counts of dealing in a substance represented to be a controlled substance .
Here's the case #: 56D01-2009-F6-000897
Vinelink has him currently in Newton County jail.
**************************
Sept 25
Christopher Channing Mathis, 28 of Kentland, was arrested by the Newton County Sheriff’s Department on a warrant for conspiracy to commit dealing in a substance represented to be a controlled substance (Level 6 Felony), and dealing in a substance represented to be a controlled substance (Level 6 Felony).

Nothing yet.

Everything he had has been decided except for

This one did have a warrant but it's been recalled and the case was decided on 1/13/2021

@FrostedGlass - is this pertaining to Kirts? It does say in the article the name.

Feb. 25, 2023
MONTICELLO — On Thursday, a grand jury met in the White County courthouse to hear evidence in the 2019 murder of Charles “Ray” Hanish, whose body was found in his apartment in March of that year and whose death was ruled a homicide due to strangulation. Hanish was an RN and was working in a nursing home at the time of his death.

o_O Yes!

[Snips from your article]
White County Prosecutor Mark Delgado, who took office on Jan. 1 of this year, said this is the first grand jury to be called in the county in the 12-13 years he’s been here. He said he obtained a true bill from the grand jury, which allows him to proceed with charges. He explained the true bill is similar to a probable cause in that it acknowledges there is enough evidence to go forward with charges. None of the proceedings in the grand jury can be shared or discussed with the public.

Garett Kirts, who is serving a 55-year sentence for the strangulation of a W. Lafayette woman in Newton County, will be formally charged with Hanish’s murder next week Delgado said.

@Niner Did we ever hear who the female with Kirts was, living in a van. Whose van was it? I was just searching records to see if he had a co-defendant for this murder but couldn't find one.
