8/20/20 Update: On Thursday Porter Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford ruled to deny the motion to suppress the recordings as evidence. At the last hearing, the defense asked the judge to not present the recordings to jurors when the case goes to trial Oct. 6. A former FBI agent testified the cellphone recordings are not the originals & have been altered in some unknown ways. Porter County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Armando Salinas Jr. argued to keep the evidence, saying, in part, that the records were obtained from the iPhone of Silva, who will testify to their authenticity. Next status hearing on 8/31/20.

Attorneys agree on rules for upcoming Kerner trial

Trial is set to begin Oct. 6.

Among the questions brought up in Monday’s hearing was how to deal with discussion of John Silva II, who is also charged in the killings.

Kerner, who was 17 at the time of the killings, reportedly said he shot Grill after Grill tried to rob him during a drug deal.

9/21/20 Update: Attorneys reached agreement on a series of questions about what testimony should be allowed in the trial. At issue was what testimony might be prejudicial to Kerner’s defense. Judge Bradford also set out rules for the trial, which is set to begin Oct. 6. Jurors will be selected at the Porter County Expo Center, to facilitate social distancing. Because of the pandemic, the public will not be allowed inside. Two seats are being set aside for the media to represent the public. Only one chair each will be allowed for the victim’s family & the defendant’s family. Masks will be required at all times except when witnesses are testifying. Next trial starts on 10/6/20.

Double slaying case will be Porter County's first jury trial since COVID-19

About 150 potential jurors are being called in in an effort to select 12 jurors and two alternates in light of concerns by the defense of bias resulting from pretrial publicity surrounding the high-profile case.

Once a jury is selected, which is expected to be Tuesday or Wednesday, the evidence portion of the trial will commence back at Bradford's courtroom with new precautions in place, such as limiting attendance to just one family member each for the accused and for each of the victims. A couple seats are being set aside for the media and jurors will be kept safely apart in the courtroom.

The trial is scheduled to take place Tuesday through Friday during the next three weeks if needed, the court said.

Defendant not put off by graphic images of charred skeletal remains in murder trial

Numerous photographs of skeletal remains found in a burned-out car were shown Thursday morning to jurors in the Connor Kerner murder trial, despite objections from the defense.

Porter County Sheriff Cpl. Nathan Graf, who is part of the department's crime scene unit, said the burned vehicle and remains were discovered March 2, 2019, in the area of County Roads 250 West and 550 South in Porter Township.

Police have said Kerner, then 17, loaded the bodies of Grill and Lanham into the trunk of the teens' Honda Civic after killing them, loading the car with various containers of flammable liquids, driving it to Porter Township and setting the car and bodies ablaze.

Kerner reportedly told his then-girlfriend he shot Grill about noon Feb. 25, 2019, after Grill tried to rob him during a drug deal in the garage of Kerner's grandparents' home in south Hebron.

That former girlfriend, who The Times is not naming at the request of prosecutors due to safety concerns, testified Wednesday afternoon that he threatened her if she were to tell anyone about the killings.

And since Monday is a holiday - I'm going to "assume" that trial continues on Tuesday, Oct. 13th.

found this for Wednesday's testimony

UPDATE: Valpo man threatened more killings following double slaying, former girlfriend says

Oct. 7, 2020

VALPARAISO — A few days after Valparaiso resident Connor Kerner allegedly killed two Lake County teens, his then-girlfriend asked what would happen if she told someone, the young woman told jurors Wednesday afternoon.

"You know how I am," the woman said, quoting Kerner. "I would kill your family and make you watch it. I would kill you after."

The woman, who The Times is not naming at the request of prosecutors due to safety concerns, is credited with leading police to Kerner following the Feb. 25, 2019, killings of 18-year-old Thomas Grill Jr., of Cedar Lake, and 19-year-old Molley Lanham, of St. John, at Kerner's grandparents home in south Hebron.
[.....]
Indianapolis-based defense attorney James Voyles raised questions earlier in the day Wednesday about the reliability of Kerner's former girlfriend. He told jurors the young woman offered two different explanations of where Kerner told her those details, was uncertain if Kerner was talking about himself or co-defendant John Silva II, went to lunch with Kerner the next day, and only came forward after Kerner broke up with her.
[.....]
The woman testified that Kerner never mentioned Silva in relation to the killings.
[.....]
He said prosecutors will present evidence Silva, who is also charged, made audio recordings of the crime in question and a conversation with Kerner. But an expert will testify those recordings were altered in some fashion.
