Iraq - Baghdad Car bombs target shopping districts, 126 dead, July 2016

CARRIIS, you made a good point in a post upthread that I think was glossed over.

There are at least 213 dead in the Baghdad, Iraq bombings.

We have just 39 posts in this thread, more than 24 hours after the bombing in a shopping mall area.

Yes, of course, it’s an American holiday, so fewer are online posting. But why is there not more outrage? Why are there not hundreds of posts mourning the dead and decrying the actions of the bombers? Why are western leaders not enmasse condemning the attack? Why are western groups like CAIR not making lots of pronouncements about the source of the attack, and lecturing us about not having negative feelings about islam and muslims? Why are we not being lectured by our politicians about not succumbing to islamophobia? Why are western monuments not lit up in the colors of the Iraqi flag as solidarity with the Iraqi people? Why are western countries not sending in teams of recovery searchers, cadaver dogs, scientists to work to identify fragments of people, etc?

Because it happened in Baghdad, Iraq. Westerners “expect” that sort of thing to happen THERE. It’s sad, but not unexpected, and fully explained by their location, their history, their culture, their politics, and their religious theocracy. It happens regularly there.

We westerners CARE when they bring that kind of murderous ideology OUT of the sandbox and into the west. As long as "they" are killing each other, we are immune to caring, IMO. We have a kind of collective fatigue for these murderous events that cannot be overcome with media sensationalism.

And let's be honest-- most westerners are CONFUSED when muslims savagely kill each other. They can't figure out which side they "should" support, because both the perpetrators and the victims are muslims, and we have been lectured to death by our politicians not to have ANY negative feelings or impressions about islam and muslims. So it's easier for most westerners to IGNORE these mass bombings in islamic theocracies, so as not to have to think too deeply about any of it, IMO.

It’s the same as most people’s response to the gang shootings in Chicago—more than 300 so far this year. We EXPECT the shootings to go up every month in violent south side gang infested neighborhoods. As long as it stays in those neighborhoods, it’s hard for most people to muster up a lot of surprise or outrage, or even care about trying to stop it, since the people there don’t seem to be upset enough to want to put a stop to it. (Unless politicians want to use the violence to make political arguments about how more gun control will magically fix all the problems.)

So in the south side of Chicago, and in Iraq, and other savage and barbaric places in the middle east, we just “note” the mayhem as pretty much what we expect from those people in those areas, and continue on with our lives.

What would shock and surprise us all is if the shooting and killing and bombing in those places actually stopped. Then we would all have something to talk about.

And the mass shootings in the US rate little press in the rest of the world. Ho hum. Just some more American idiocy. They expect it from the US. Kindergartners shot in a school in America? That 's ok with America. Not much interest, Just abother notch in American lunacy

Why was this particular shopping area targeted? Because it's frequented by shias. (Pay attention to the western dress--jeans and shirts-- of the men in media photos. It's a clue.)

So, let's review a few similar bombings in and around Baghdad in the last 8 weeks alone.

Multiple bombings in Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, have killed dozens and wounded several others, Iraqi officials said. Three of the attacks were on Shia-dominated neighborhoods while the fourth target is mixed.

In the first attack, an explosion hit an open-air market in Shaab, in northeastern Baghdad. Shortly afterward, a suicide attacker targeted those people who were helping the victims in the predominantly Shia neighborhood. In all, at least 50 people were killed, police said. ISIS claimed responsibility.

Next, an explosion struck a market in Dora, a mixed Sunni-Shia neighborhood. At least five people were killed. Then, a car bomb struck Sadr City, the Shia neighborhood, killing 14 people.

A similar attack last week on a market in Sadr City killed nearly 100 people, making it the deadliest attack in Iraq this year. ISIS claimed responsibility for that attack and other recent ones around Iraq.

BAGHDAD -- A wave of bombings struck outdoor markets and a restaurant in Shiite-dominated neighborhoods of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least 69 people, officials said - the latest in deadly militant attacks far from the front lines in the country's north and west where Iraqi forces are battling the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

ISIS, which has been behind recent deadly attacks in the area, claimed responsibility for the deadliest attack, which took place in Baghdad's northeastern Shaab neighborhood and where at least 34 people were killed and 75 others were wounded.

This is from yesterday's attack. This kind of attack is nothing new or unusual for Baghdad.

IS claimed the attack in a statement saying it was carried out by an Iraqi as part of "ongoing security operations".

The jihadist group said the blast targeted Iraq's Shiite Muslim majority, whom the Sunni extremists consider heretics and frequently attack in Baghdad and elsewhere.

Here's a nice primer on the sunni- shia distribution and conflict.

*Keep in mind that all of the Arab allies of America are sunnis.

In particular, Saudi Arabia, the most violent and oppressive sect of wahabi sunni. Saudi Arabia is our best buddy! <sarc>

So peaceful, this wonderful religion called islam! <sarc>

The Bush family is BFF with Saudi Arabia leaders.

The 9-11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia yet we blow up Iraq.

And military assaults in which civilians are killed over there are celebrated over here.

eta: let's not forget that we (the USA) have killed far more civilians in Muslim countries than Muslim terrorists have killed here. I mean, it's not even close.

Like Omar mo not ISIS -local folks doing it . ISIS has been claiming all of these since Sept, and proven to be lies!!

These 5 were from affluent families and educated - a atypical of the disenfrachesed marginalized folks (like gangs here) that go for the Isis stuff

Dont remember which mass shooting it was, committed by a white AMerican, there was a comment from a British citizen that said

"looks like the Americans are killing each other again" We are the laughing stock of the world. Its like the TV show the Wild Wild West!! Most civililzed nations do not get our bang em cowboy mentality.

I would bet there are more christians in AMerica that are homophobic than Muslims that are anti AMerican

Can you say this with a straight face, considering that the presumptive Republican candidate has suggested a moratorium on accepting Muslim immigrants? To me, it's kind of odd, considering that Muslims are generally pretty conservative, politically. And it also reminds me of periods of WWII, in which some north American countries would not accept Jewish immigrants. All of this makes me throw up in my mouth a little, and the way that so many people accept this sort of policy nowadays is far worse.

The USA and Canada are countries formed by immigrants. It's something to think about.

I know (through the people I tend to follow on Twitter) quite a few Muslims who are leftist, progressive, pro gay rights, feminist, etc and who are not at all conservative, unless you equate 'has religious belief and follows religious custom' with 'conservative'. They tend to be PhD students or academics or other educated professionals.

They would be the first in the firing line of ISIS - it's Muslims like them who are "moderate" (to use a very Western-centric term) who Daesh hate the most of all, even above non-Muslims.

Being hated the most seems to be another facet of American exceptionalism.

CNN Iraq prime minister just resigned cause of this..

It's an overused cliché that Baghdad is accustomed to violence and bloodshed. It's not. Death is death, and when it visits your home and rips away the lives of loved ones, that pain is as intense here as it is anywhere else.

As of Monday evening, the death toll stood at 215, making it the single deadliest attack since 2003.

On Tuesday, Interior Minister Mohammed Salem al-Ghabban submitted his resignation, citing what he said was a lack of "coordination among security systems."
