An alleged prostitution ring has been shut down in Israel, and police say male cult leaders told women the future of the state and their own spiritual redemption depended on them selling sex. Drugs and alcohol were also used to ensure their compliance. The proceeds are reported to have gone into the hands of the leaders. Police have released the names of two suspects, in the hope of encouraging other victims to come forward.

'Eight ringleaders of what police are describing as a “messianic” cult active throughout Israel are accused of telling female recruits that they must prostitute themselves to non-Jewish men “to save the Jewish people and expedite the redemption,” Haaretz reports.'

David Dvash, AKA 'David the Best', 60, a resident of the hard-line Bat Ayin settlement in the West Bank, is one of two suspects named. He reportedly has two wives and 15 children (who have been removed from his care by welfare agencies now). One wife is also a suspect in the case.

Another suspect is named as Breslov Hassid. Lawyers for them both have entered insanity pleas.

'Dvash was first introduced to the public after he sued an insurance company and an actor in their advertisement, for taking on his character in a successful commercials series. In 2008 the court ruled in favor of Dvash, demanding the company to compensate him by 400 thousand Shekels'

"A young woman who was hurt addressed me, a woman that wasn’t prepared to speak with anyone before", Lehava activist Anat Goferstein said. "We spoke for a long time, she told me of a cult which draws women and forces prostitution on them...under a cover pertaining to Jewish law, under strong religious belief and self-annulment of the woman so that her personality was completely erased. He would stand over and take pictures, and they found a religious explanation for that as well..."

400,000 Shekels is about $110,000, by the way.

I notice they could only prostitute themselves to non-Jewish men.
