Search for Bodies Edges Closer to Crippled Nuclear Plant

Tepco Said to Plan for Three Months of Cooling at Fukushima

Engineers at Tokyo Electric rejected a proposal to flood reactors at the damaged plant, which could lower temperatures in days rather than months, according to the person, who asked not to be identified because he isn’t authorized to speak to the media. Instead, the utility is pumping in water and venting off steam, a method called “feed and bleed.”

Flooding the space between the pressure vessel and the surrounding containment could bring temperatures down in days rather than months, according to the person.

With Record levels of radiation being found in fish and vegetables Japan says milk is magically safe to eat.

WHO says there is no need to take new public health measures after Fukushima upgraded to disaster of same level as Chernobyl after several days ago the real risk was food becoming contaminated.
I guess we'll just wait and see in 10 to 20 years if more precautions were necessary!!:banghead:

Japan's northeast suffered many large past tsunamis

(Reuters) - Japan's battered northeastern coast suffered many large tsunamis in the past and nuclear power stations there should have been built to withstand these huge walls of water, a scientist said on Thursday.

..."It's known to have happened before and it's well documented and so when they built a nuclear power plant they should have provided for a tsunami of the same size," Geller said.

"But they planned for a tsunami to be 5.6 meters and the actual tsunami was about 15 meters, so it completely overwhelmed the defenses."

Geller said all nuclear plants in Japan should be reviewed to ensure they are tsunami-resistant.

"They definitely should, they are almost all on the oceanfront. You need a lot of water to cool them," he said.

The concentration levels of radioactive iodine and cesium in groundwater near the troubled Nos. 1 and 2 reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have increased up to several dozen times in one week, suggesting that toxic water has seeped from nearby reactor turbine buildings or elsewhere, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Thursday.

The announcement came as the plant operator continued to grapple with pools of highly radioactive water found on the plant's premises, with the level of polluted water filling an underground trench edging up again after the company finished pumping out around 660 tons of water.

According to the latest findings, a groundwater sample taken April 6 near the No. 1 reactor turbine building showed radioactive iodine-131 of 72 becquerels per cubic meter, with the concentration level growing to 400 becquerels as of Wednesday. The concentration level of cesium-134 increased from 1.4 becquerels to 53 becquerels.

Yes, Iodine has gone up x6 and cesium is x30. Also sounds like they can't pinpoint just where it's leaking from.

And how do they know that people who have previously been issued a certificate have not sneaked back in to gather belongings and are now contaminated anyway?

I thought they could just bathe them to decontaminate them, isn't that what they said?

8 years old, refused medical treatment? So very sad :(

They need to dispel myths and do dome serious educating with facts over there.

Workers were firing water into the pond from a distance in an effort to prevent the fuel from overheating and releasing radioactive contaminants, but fluid collecting in an adjacent flood control container triggered an incorrect warning that the pond had been filled. Personnel halted water transfers to the pool for a number of days in response to the warning, allowing heat and radiation levels to increase even though the fuel was thought to have remained submerged, Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency Deputy Director General Hidehiko Nishiyama said. Water spraying began again on Wednesday.

I've seen these videos on the internet before and heard the theories of at least the eastern part of Japan slipping and thought it was far fetched. But now-I'm not so sure the idea is that out there. Apparently there are some surveys that lend some credence to at least part of Japan in danger of slippage into a deep trench off the coast.:waitasec:

Geologists are releasing their findings from the massive undersea earthquake and warning that the eastern coastal regions of Japan are in danger of falling into the trench created in the sea floor. Quote:After the earthquake it was hard to collect GPS data points. The results during an earthquake in the east-southeast direction showed moving about 5.3m for Oshika Peninsula, about 1.2m found that there was a new settlement . Moreover, the continued gradual deformation after an earthquake was in wide range around the focal area, after a change from large earthquakes it was greater than 20 cm.

The areas closest to the epicenter of the quake jumped a full 4 meters (13 feet) closer to the United States, geophysicist Ross Stein at the United States Geological Survey told The New York Times. As Japan's eastern coastline sunk, the tsunami's waves rolled in.

Nuclear fuel inside the crippled reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant has partially melted and settled in granular form at the bottom of pressure vessels, according to an analysis by the Atomic Energy Society of Japan made public by Friday.

The panel has assumed that the fuel has slowly melted and become granular as it was quenched when it fell into the cooling water and then settled at the bottom of the reactor pressure vessels.

Parts of the fuel rods in the Nos. 1 and 2 reactors have apparently been exposed, while those in the No. 3 reactor have been completely submerged in water, according to the panel.

Meanwhile, small amounts of plutonium believed to have been released as a result of the ongoing disaster have been detected in soil samples taken at the nuclear complex in Fukushima Prefecture, according to TEPCO.

The agency said, meanwhile, that pressure inside the No. 1 reactor has dropped somewhat, an indication that air inside the reactor has leaked outside, but that no major changes in radiation levels have been detected.

Also Friday, the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., said it will pay up to 1 million yen to residents of each of the roughly 50,000 households within 30 kilometers of the plant who have been forced to evacuate their homes or remain indoors, as provisional compensation for the damage caused by the crisis.

That's $11954.57 per household, total of $597,728,500 in US dollars.
