Smoke billows from a Kyoto Animation building in Kyoto, western Japan, Thursday, July 18, 2019. The fire broke out in the three-story building in Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto, after a suspect sprayed an unidentified liquid to accelerate the blaze, Kyoto prefectural police and fire department officials said.(Kyodo News via AP)

"TOKYO -- A man screaming “You die!” burst into an animation studio in Kyoto, doused it with a flammable liquid and set it on fire Thursday, killing 33 people in an attack that shocked the country and brought an outpouring of grief from anime fans.

Thirty-six others were injured, some of them critically, in a blaze that sent people scrambling up the stairs toward the roof in a desperate - and futile - attempt to escape. Others emerged bleeding, blackened and barefoot.

The suspect was injured and taken to a hospital. Police identified him only a 41-year-old man who was not a company employee. They gave no immediate details on the motive.

Most of the victims were employees of Kyoto Animation, which does work on feature films and TV productions but is best known for its mega-hit stories featuring high school girls. The stories are so popular that some of the places depicted have become pilgrimage sites for fans.

The blaze started in the three-story building in Japan's ancient capital after the attacker sprayed an unidentified liquid accelerant, police and fire officials said.

“There was an explosion, then I heard people shouting, some asking for help,” a witness told TBS TV. “Black smoke was rising from windows on upper floors. Ten there was a man struggling to crawl out of the window.”

Japanese media reported the fire might have been set near the front door, forcing people to find other ways out.

Firefighters found 33 bodies, 20 of them on the third floor and some on the stairs to the roof, where they apparently collapsed, Kyoto fire official Kazuhiro Hayashi said. Two were found dead on the first floor, 11 others on the second floor, he said."

Kyoto animation studio: 33 dead in suspected arson attack in Japan - CNN
"Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe tweeted that he was left speechless at the "gruesomeness of the crime," and offered condolences to victims.
Founded in 1981, Kyoto Animation -- known as KyoAni -- produces animations and publishes anime novels, comics and books, according to its website. Among Japan's most well known studios, its most famous works include "Free!", manga series "K-On!", the anime TV adaptation of "Haruhi Suzumiya" and "Violet Evergarden" which Netflix picked up in 2018.
The company's philosophy as posted on its website includes keeping a "humanitarian" corporate culture and believes that "promoting the growth of people is equal to creating the brightness of works."

"There was an outpouring of grief on Twitter Thursday with fans of the studio offering their condolences."

"Kyoto Animation is a beloved, organized, & independent studio full of talented people who’ve worked/helped tirelessly on these gorgeously animated & heartwarming shows that spread joy to millions. My condolences to all the brilliant staffs & their families."

While most of the blame should be placed on the suspect, with 33 dying and many others with serious injuries the place sounds like a firetrap--and management is responsible for that.

"After the tragic Kyoto Animation fire on Thursday that has left at least 33 dead and 35 people injured, several people are still missing.

One of which is presumed to be famous animator Yasuhiro Takemoto."

"Shinji Aoba is suspected of starting the fire that killed 33 people and injured dozens more at Kyoto Animation aka KyoAni in Japan on July 18. There were around 70 people inside of the building at the time of the fire. The Kyoto offices are located in a residential area in the city of Kyoto, which is 30 miles north of Osaka.

Aoba was initially apprehended by a Kyoto employee and later taken into custody by police who had arrived on the scene. The suspect suffered burns to his face, chest and legs. Reports from Japan says that Aoba has yet to be questioned by investigators as he is under sedation at a hospital. NHK in Japan reports that Aoba admitted to starting to fire when he was first taken into custody...

Witnesses told BBC News that Aoba could be heard complaining that Kyoto had stolen and plagiarized his novel prior to allegedly setting the fire. Officials in Japan have not definitively stated what they believe Aoba’s motive was. In the weeks leading up to the fire, the company’s president said that threatening letters had been received at their offices."

"The suspected arsonist behind the deadly fire at an animation studio in Japan was identified Friday as Shinji Aoba, who served time in prison for robbery and has been treated for mental health issues, according to reports."

"Aoba, a resident of the Tokyo suburb of Saitama, is believed to have bought two 20-liter (5-gallon) gas cans at a hardware store and prepared the incendiary attack in a park near the studio after traveling by train, according to Reuters, which cited Nippon TV.

A Kyoto Fushimi Police spokesman said authorities were not yet aware of a link between the suspect and the studio, according to CNN."

"After completing his sentence, he briefly lived in a shelter for former convicts before moving to his current apartment, where he lives on welfare, the news outlet reported.

He also had run-ins with his neighbors over noise that police have responded to."

"The studio received a death threat through its website in October 2018, police said.

The company filed a formal complaint to police but they were unable to identify the sender."

I'm against capital punishment but I don't think it would be a problem if someone forgot to give this guy any painkillers!
What's his defence going to be, "I only wanted to leave dozens of people unemployed and burn their life's work?" o_O That on it's own would deserve a long prison sentence IMO!

Suspect in Japan anime studio fire charged with murder
''TOKYO -- Japanese prosecutors formally filed murder charges Wednesday against a suspect in a deadly fire at a Kyoto anime studio last year, after it was determined that he has recovered enough from his own severe burns and is mentally fit to stand trial.

Police in the southern city of Kyoto did not arrest Shinji Aoba, 42, on murder and arson allegations until late May, 10 months after obtaining a warrant, because they had to wait for him to recover. Authorities also carried out a mental evaluation of Aoba and concluded that he is capable of taking criminal responsibility.''

''Aoba sustained severe burns to his face, torso and limbs and was unconscious for weeks. He still cannot walk and was transferred on a stretcher from his hospital room to a detention centre, where an investigation was carried out while his health was carefully monitored.''

''Police have said Aoba told them that he set the fire because he thought Kyoto Animation "stole novels" and that he thought he could kill many people with gasoline.''

A Japanese court sentenced a man to death after finding him guilty of murder and other crimes Thursday for carrying out a shocking arson attack on an anime studio in Kyoto, Japan, that killed 36 people.
