Mr. Johnson was last seen on video surveillance footage departing from the Federal Point Yacht Club on 11/22/2021 at approximately 1100 hours in his 19-foot 2006 Marine Clearwater 1900CC center console boat . Mr. Johnson was seen by himself on the vessel. The last time Mr. Johnson's cell phone pinged was on 11/22/21 at 1717 hours off of Bald Head Island, NC. Mr. Johnson may have taken a handgun with him prior to his departure.

Joseph Matthew Johnson was 44 years old when officials said he was last seen in November. He was alone when he left the Federal Point Yacht Club marina in a Clearwater boat, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. Now, seven months after Johnson disappeared from the North Carolina coast, a Clearwater boat that he owned was discovered more than 2,800 miles away across the Atlantic. The boat washed onto São Jorge Island, part of the Azores region about 900 miles off the coast of Portugal, according to the Carolina Beach Police Department.

The missing man wasn’t inside the boat, and the search for him continues, officials said Monday, June 27 in a news release. Johnson, a Carolina Beach resident, reportedly hasn’t been seen since about 11 a.m. on Nov. 22. That day, officials said his cellphone stopped pinging at about 5:15 p.m., when it was near Bald Head Island.

Mr. Johnson may have taken a handgun with him prior to his departure.~~On 6/21/22, the Carolina Beach Police Department was contacted by authorities in São Jorge Island, Azores, Portugal in reference to locating Mr. Johnson's missing vessel. The condition of the vessel showed heavy barnacle and algae buildup indicative of the vessel having been capsized and/or on shore for an unknown extended period of time. The Portuguese authorities conducted an examination of the vessel and a search of the area and was unable to locate Mr. Johnson or obtain information on his whereabouts.~~Yellow Notice being issued for Mr. Johnson with Interpol.
