Jury ends deliberations for the day.

I think it is good that the jury wasn't in haste. They could get a good nights sleep, let it play over and over in their minds tonight and be fresh in the morning. And I agree with another person who said they may already have a verdict and not yet have what they will charge her with. For the sake of Caylee I really hope it is guilty in the 1st degree.

I looked up the David Westerfield trial and I found this:

The trial lasted two months and concluded on August 8. On August 21, the jury found him guilty of kidnapping and first degree murder

It also took more than 3 months for the judge to formally sentence Westerfield to death, after the jury had recommended it.

I don't think one can tell much about the length of deliberations...

I didn't think they'd come back with a verdict today. Not that it's even in same category - not even close. But I was a juror on a criminal trial and we all agreed on a verdict, but also agreed to sleep on it for the night (it had already been a long day).

Now mind you, I was not sequestered or anything like that. But the jury has been there for 2 months! I wouldn't expect them to come back any earlier than tomorrow afternoon - after that I would begin to start wondering.

Especially after LDB's closing. I listened to it again, it was just so amazing!!!

My hearts and thoughts go out to the jurors tonight.

When it was announced so quickly that there was a verdict in the O.J. Simpson case, my dh immediately said, "It's not guilty." According to him, not guilty verdicts take longer than guilty ones. There are a LOT of charges against Casey, I can see it taking awhile. They might be discussing whether or not she deserves the death penalty. I'll be happy with either, just so she spends the rest of her life in prison.

it's my opinion that the Prosecution presented an extremely strong circumstantial case....and I believe the jury probably already determined that ICA is guilty...but I also believe the jurors will opt for 1st degree murder - life w/no parole. IMO, they did not give their verdict today, choosing instead to sleep on their decision & to make ICA stew for a "night of eternity"....as payback for putting the family, the attorneys, law enforcement and the jurors thru this fiasco.

I don't think the jury has reached a verdict, I think they probably voted, saw there were varying opinions, and began going over the evidence. JMO. I don't think they are going to rush, a few days doesn't matter much now, they have been gone 6 weeks. But I also don't think it will be easy for 12 people to decide on what degree of murder this is. JMO

Does the jury know if they are close to a verdict they can request a longer deliberation day? Is this in the jury instructions?

Agree. Several choices may make it more difficult for an unanimous decision, at least initially.

I have confidence in this jury that they are working hard. They deliberated for under 6 hours today(and that likely also included them being able to eat lunch. I'm not worried that they haven't come back with a verdict yet. I take it as a good sign that they are working through the evidence.

I think this jury respects the oath they took, I think they have bonded with HHJP and with each other. Look at how lighthearted the jury sounded when HHJP asked them if the Dessert Lady visited them yet nearly every afternoon during the trial. Remember when HHJP asked if the jury could hear noise, the jury laughed, and he told them about the hawk that perches outside the window ledge behind him?

I do believe that the computer forensics will trouble the jurors and they will have to decide what they believe about the differences between the Net Analysis and Cacheback reports about the Google searches for chloroform and the visits to sci-spot.com to learn to make chloroform because that goes to premeditation according to the prosecution theory.

Regarding your last paragraph, I believe one of the male jurors is an IT specialist. Hopefully he will be able to assist others less knowledgeable and walk them through it.

IIRC, there are two IT Professionals on the jury. They should be able to help explain that. IIRC too, there are no chemists.

HHJBP just sent the jury back for the night. They'll continue deliberations tomorrow morning.

Thanks! Let's hope they've made some progress today - chosen a jury foreperson and taken a preliminary count of guilty vs. not guilty vote to see where they stand.

Does anyone know if once the verdict is announced, is the jury released from sequestration, or are they kept sequestered during the penalty phase (if there's a guilty verdict).

I don't think the decision about whether to give Casey the death penalty or not is even an issue with them. The decision for a guilty verdict has to be all of them agreeing to the charges. The decision on whether or not to give her death is an individual decision and should not, imo, weigh in on their decision to decide guilt of innocence. They have to follow the law and when they were sworn in, they swore the would.

I did not think that we would get a verdict today. I will be surprised if we get one tomorrow. I am leaning more towards Wednesday or Thursday. They have a lot of evidence to review.

I am happy that they are going to get some much needed rest tonight. No more having to sit there for hours on end listening to testimony. It is now up to them to review the evidence and make a decision. I pray it is the right one.

DH and I were discussing this. He opined that they probably needed further instruction by the judge about the charges (someone tweeted that the judge and jury are to meet at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, but take that with a grain of salt).

OR...I'm wondering since the jury asked for a list of the evidence, they want to smell/touch/see the "smell" cans.

BBM -Me too - I think it will be Wednesday and hope they take the time to go over all jury instructions.

I believe they will remain sequestered along with the alternates until they are discharged.

Actually saw HHJBP dismissing the jury for the night, and nothing was mentioned about a request for evidence, etc. He stated they would return at 8:30am tomorrow to resume deliberations.

They aren't supposed to be thinking any penalty in these deliberations. Just the charges and guilt or innocence. and you're right, there are a lot of charges with lots of evidence to consider.
