Police renew search of Chisholm Creek Park for missing 5-year-old

A meticulous, renewed search for 5-year-old Lucas Hernandez in Chisholm Creek Park on Friday came up empty for Wichita police as the hunt for the boy who has been missing for nearly a week now continues.

Authorities had previously searched the park on Monday, but Officer Paul Cruz said “a new tip” prompted “a strategic search” of a portion of the park Friday afternoon. The search included K-9 units and Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputies.

Pile of rocks prompts police search of Chapin Park for missing Lucas Hernandez

A tip to police of a disturbed pile of rocks prompted a police search of Chapin Park on Tuesday afternoon for a boy missing for 11 days.

Someone walking in the area found a pile of rocks on top of ground that may have been disturbed and called police at about 4:45 p.m., Officer Charley Davidson said. Officers investigated the area with the help of police dogs, but nothing associated with the case of missing 5-year-old Lucas Hernandez was found. Chapin Park is near Hydraulic and MacArthur Road.

[h=1]Tree in Lucas Hernandez photo connected to case from decades earlier[/h]Nine-year-old Nancy Shoemaker disappeared on July 30, 1990. Her body was found seven months after her disappearance. As the search for Lucas continues, people in the Wichita community and beyond hope the boy's story does not turn out the same as Nancy's.

A connection between the two children comes in the form of a willow tree. One photo of Lucas shows the boy with his backpack, ready for school. Directly behind him is the small tree.

That small willow tree was planted in memory of Nancy Shoemaker. Like Lucas, Nancy was a student at Beech Elementary School.

Day 15: Texas volunteers discusses search to help find Lucas Hernandez

The search for missing 5-year-old Lucas Hernandez is now entering the third week.

On Sunday, Texas Equusearch worked on day two of their search. The team's founder Tim Miller says he got involved in the search after local law enforcement, community members and Lucas's family asked for help in finding Lucas.

"Unfortunately, we don't have any good news yet. We can say we know where Lucas isn't. We've covered a lot of ground. We've been working just hand-in-hand with law enforcement. And you know, little tips and little information comes in that they feel is priority, which doesn't need the whole community and volunteers and stuff to know."

[h=1]Search for Lucas Day 19: Group gathers for vigil outside missing boy's home[/h]WICHITA, Kan. It's been 19 days since 5-year-old Lucas Hernandez was reported missing. Police, search groups and community members have not uncovered any signs in the search for the boy, but hope remains.

Thursday night, several dozen people gathered for a vigil outside the boy's home on South Edgemoor. Those gathered at the vigil holding candles and signs, are hoping for answers. And they say they will keep asking questions.
One of the people they want answers from is Lucas' stepmother, Emiliy Glass. Glass is in the Sedgwick County Jail, charged with one count of child endangerment for a situation involving a different child.

It’s been three weeks since Lucas Hernandez was reportedly last seen and the public is not letting this case slip through the cracks like so many others.

A public search is planned for Sunday morning, near 29th and Oliver, in the area directly across from Chisholm Creek Park.

A special Texas search team is returning to Wichita to continue their search for missing five-year-old Lucas Hernandez.

Texas EquuSearch temporarily suspended their search on March 6 after receiving credible information on another case that needed immediate attention.

The team's founder Tim Miller told Eyewitness News that Equusearch will return Monday morning to follow up on new information provided by detectives.

Miller couldn't disclose the location the team would be searching.

Volunteer searchers were out on Sunday following up on tips and using dogs.

    <snip>

Laforce is just one of the searchers on foot Sunday but she says the most important searcher is on four feet.
"Since it's so cold out here, all of our noses are running, that cadaver dog is gonna have a much better scent than we are right now."
The dog, Laforce says, is helping them search for clues or signs of Lucas. In the meantime, she's also helping set up a reward fund for information leading to the 5-year-old.

"God forbid if Lucas isn't found safe, this reward that we're putting the money in towards can go to a memorial or we can set up a scholarship in his name. Anything we can do. But we are not there yet. We still have hope."

Searchers say within the past week, they've found a towel that appeared to have blood on it and turned it over to police. No word from police on if that towel is connected to Lucas's case.

Missing boy's dad would welcome stepmom home if she can win release from jail

In a phone interview with The Eagle on Monday — the 23rd day that his son, Lucas, has been missing — Jonathan Hernandez said: “I am standing by her until either some other information comes out or something about the case breaks. If it involves her, obviously it would be different. Obviously, my thoughts would be changing if she was implicated in any way involving Lucas.”

Still, he said, “Everybody has to be innocent until they’re proven guilty.”
There shouldn’t be a lynch-mob mentality against his wife, he said.
“I realize it’s frustrating for the public not to know” what happened to Lucas, he said.

He added he remains hopeful that his son will be found OK.
If his wife can obtain a lower bond and get out of jail, it would benefit her and their children — their daughter and Lucas, Hernandez said.
“I’m sure we have a lot of things to do personally between her and me” if she gets released, he said.
Glass is asking a judge to change her bond so she can be released from jail and have contact with her family and other children.
