KY - 4 horses die at Churchill Downs in the days leading up to Kentucky Derby - 3 May 2023

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The early favorite for the Kentucky Derby has been scratched hours before the race.

Forte was declared out of the 149th Derby on Saturday, according to Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers. No immediate reason was announced.

It was the fifth scratch this week from the race...
I think they should shut the track down . Would you keep sending you kid to soccer games if 6 of their players died? The FBI should be looking into this and Joseph should file a lawsuit . IMO

I'm not sure the track and stables are the same entities. But regardless, these horses are usually heavily insured. I am sure there are multiple insurance investigators ALL over this. This is big money and that is how this will get exposed.

I totally agree with you. I don't understand why they have to euthanize the horses with injuries. Can they not be rehabilitated and live out their lives at a sanctuary? Just because they cannot race anymore doesn't mean they have no use. It makes me sick. I would understand if they were in immense pain and there was no hope of recovering from their injuries, but I suspect that is not the case here. They can no longer race or will need time and medical care to race again, so they don't want to put the time, money, and energy into rehabbing them.
Horses need all four legs and they need to have equal balance among all four of those legs. Here’s an article that can explain it better than I can.

I listened to a report on the day of the race. The 2 that died after the races were of the most concern as the others were injured in different ways. Some were using dirt track and one was on grass track.

Thank you for providing this information. It is so tragic
That when a horse breaks its leg it often results in
The necessity for euthanasia. There are some owners though
Who have spared no expense in an effort to save their horse.
Barbaro comes to mind and he almost made it, but in the
End he developed deadly laminitis and was euthanized 8
Months after the injury. The there is a horse named "The
Player" who broke down in a big race--- he sustained a life
Threatening fracture but his owner did everything to save
Him and he is alive and well today.

Watching My Friend Flicka growing up, I had an absolute love of horses. Even as a kid, I knew all about the famous Kentucky Derby with all the excitement, the beautiful people, the hats, the social events leading up to the event. I was always excited about it until I read that the intense physical exercise they are subjected can make their lungs bleed. It broke my heart to learn that.

I have never watched the derby since then, and every year when I hear it is coming up, I feel ill at the thought of what those magnificent creatures are subjected to, all in the name of a win and the big bucks for its owner.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A horse died Sunday after a race at Churchill Downs, making it the eighth fatality in recent weeks at the home of the Kentucky Derby.

Rio Moon “suffered a catastrophic injury to his left foreleg a few strides after the wire,” according to notes in the Equibase chart for the sixth race...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A ninth horse died Saturday after being injured following the sixth race at Churchill Downs, making it the ninth fatality since late April at the home of the Kentucky Derby.

Swanson Lake, a 3-year-old filly, was pulled up by jockey James Graham about 100 yards past the finish line after placing fourth in the $120,000 race. She was vanned off the track...

How many horses does it take to call it a crime scene?
My first guess at the answer is =more than 9?
This is getting gross ,and looking like it is controlled by fat bourbon collectors .

The breakdown of a racing thoroughbred is extremely common on US tracks and always has been with an estimated average in 2018 of 10 horses a WEEK. Why horses are dying at U.S. racetracks at an alarming rate.

Some of the growth plates in horses' legs and hips don't fully close and fuse until they are three and a half to five years old. The richest, most prestigious thoroughbred races in the USA run two- and three-year-olds. Trainers consider this a common risk and an occupational hazard. Yes, that's disgusting. What you must realize is this is NOT about the horses as much as it is about the money. Always has been, always will be. That's the reason I can't follow racing like I once did. It hurts my heart.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two horses have died the past two days following injuries at Churchill Downs, the 11th and 12th fatalities over the past month at the home of the Kentucky Derby.

Mare Kimberley Dream was euthanized after sustaining a distal sesamodean ligament rupture to her front leg during Saturday’s first race. Lost in Limbo was euthanized following a similar injury just before the finish line in Friday’s seventh race.

The track stated in a release that both injuries were “inoperable and unrecoverable.”...

An old saying is that "a horse is only as good as its legs".

Especially true for racers.
