KY KY - Redhead Murders, 70's-90's

This case (mentioned earlier) strikes me as a Robert Ben Rhoades victim: http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/784ufmo.html

She was found bound and in an abandoned farm house.

Robert was a long haul driver that bound his victims (often shaving their heads & torturing them). He was convicted.

Most of the other cases linked here have a few similarities beyond the red hair and the length. It seems a number of them were found without their shoes but often with most of their clothing. A few had descriptions of their socks being clean (I take that to mean that they were carried not walking to where they were found). Other similarities were that they had been struck upon the head/neck and were strangled in some fashion. All were dumped not killed on site.

I looked through all the links and it's pretty obvious there was more than 1 killer active at that time. Some seem out of place (the 5 month pregnant woman, the lady with the possible overdose and another who had been set on fire), but there is a bulk that seem to fit the same.

I think he keeps shoes as trophies. He obviously didn't keep jewelry as most still had things like that with them. Shoes were always missing.

Here are the ones I think go together:

Has anyone consider Glenn Edwards Rogers. The Cross Country Killer/The Casanova Killer
He killed Redheads. He traveled with a circus from 1989 - 1983
Some think Rogers Killed over 100 people. He was convicted of murder in Cal and Fla and was on death row in Cal. and I think he has been executed. He pimped girls and killed one of the girls...a redhead.

ID show about Glen Rogers. He traveled in these states & definitely had a history with women with red hair.

I lived in Nashville until 1995 and remember when a lot of these murders were discovered. I'm 5'3 1/2" and a red head. The story was that the killer preferred petite redheads. My sister is also a redhead but a bit taller than I am.

Anyway I can't find it now but at one time there was a truck driver arrested that they thought may have been connected to these murders. He had abducted a petite redhead and she some how managed to get away from him and alert LE as to him. They did make an arrest but I don't know how it turned out. Does anyone following these murders have any knowledge of this arrest? I can't even remember where the arrest was now, maybe right outside of Nashville.

Yes, I believe you are talking about Thomas Lee Elkins who is the subject of the first post in this thread. He was later convicted of crimes in Florida and Texas as well that all involved sexual assaults. From the TXDPS website: Thomas Lee ELKINS, a violent sexual predator was added to the most wanted list on 10/11/2012. ELKINS was a civilly committed sex offender who removed his ankle bracelet and fled from a halfway house in Houston on October 5th. On October 19th, a tip was received placing ELKINS as a passenger in a truck which was later pulled over by TX DPS Highway Patrol and Coppell PD at a location in Coppell, Texas. At 9:07 am, ELKINS was arrested and transported to Coppell PD without incident where he was questioned by a DPS CID Agent. This arrest was the result of a tip and a $5,000 reward will be paid.

These are the crimes that he was charged with in Texas: Aggravated Sexual Assault, Assault, Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Rape, Forcible Rape, Indecent Liberties with Child, Aggravated Battery

It infuriates me that a dangerous sexual predator like this, who could also be a killer, would be in and out of at least 2 other jails before going to Texas where he was placed in a halfway house!

That is the first person I thought of, interesting comments here by Anthony M says he has many letters from him and some murders being in KY amongst many other states. http://serialkillers.briancombs.net/3707/victims-of-glen-rogers/ scroll right to the bottom of the page. After all he did originally confess to killing 70 people.

This article is mainly focused on the capture of Bruce Mendenhall, a truck-stop hooker killer, but mentions a few others like him.
It gives insight into the type of people who would be killing these ladies. I said "people" because not all of these women could have been killed by the same offender.

The murderers of these women just seem to have the same "type" and operate in a similar manner. I don't know if truck-drivers generally have a love/hate obsession with redheads or if redheads have the tendency to gravitate toward being Truck Stop hookers. But the murders of so many redheads along interstates makes it look like more than a coincidence.

Looking at the crime scene, Nashville Metro Detective Pat Postiglione thought: serial killer. Postiglione, a small, wiry man with black hair, nearly black eyes, and the trace of a Queens accent, had encountered them before, and he saw several things that said “serial killer” to him here...

I was going back through this thread today and saw that many of my DoeNet links were dead. They weren't really identified, just changed from "hotcase" to "regular case" with new links. I now realize I should put a date or something because when something is still a Hotcase, it is a number with no tie to a state/date/etc.

I will go on and post their updated links...

NamUs just listed a case of a UID that was found off of State Route 58 in Huntington TWP, OH that was found in a field, estimated between 1980-2011. Just skeletal remains, no hair mentioned. The only thing found were press on nails, a sequined top or dress, and undergarments. Her nails and clothing, the possible time of her death, and the fact she was found close to a highway in the mid-West, made me think of these cases. I wonder how many more are out there.

I generally dislike NamUs profiles, especially ones without pics. The stats they give could often include just about anyone. I'll let this one slide in that respect since they likely haven't been able to examine her thoroughly.

From this one, I take it that she was a sexually mature yet pre-menopausal female (the age range of 16-55). She was likely killed around 2006, but could have been killed as early as 1980 (that's a big time-span).

Her clothing makes me think that she was in the lower half of the estimated age range (at least at the time of death). She was wearing a spaghetti-strap shirt and a "brand" name (Victoria's Secret) bra. Plus the french manicure fake nails makes me think the younger end, too.

Regarding the Victoria's Secret bra... I know there have been VS stores in Louisville since at least the early/mid-1990's.
I don't wear/buy girls' underthings, so I may be a little off on that date.
Louisville is generally where we go when someone in my area goes "to the mall." It looks like Cleveland would be the "go to the mall" town for where she was found, or perhaps Columbus a bit further south of there.

Anyway, I looked up some history of the company. It was started in San Francisco in 1977 and rapidly spread into malls during the mid-1980's. Then I saw that they were noted for having one of the "best-selling catalogs." So basically, looking for when/where she could have gone to a Victoria's Secret to get the bra went out the door. Having a catalog would make it just as simple to buy something if you're in BFE as it would be to get it if you were in NYC.

And most of the "Redhead" victims were found near Interstates, or at least major thoroughfares. This lady was found about halfway between I-20 and I-71, though not really close to either.

On the Peugot watch...
I know that they make cars. But watches?
I guess they could, but I've never heard of a Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Mercedes or Land Rover watch.
If it were some kind of promotional item, we should look for folks missing from outside of the USA that could have gone to the USA. It's a French company, but I only know of them from a few trips to Ireland many years back. I am sure that someone "over here" probably owns one, but I can't recall ever knowing anyone that actually drives a Peugot.

Hopefully, more info will be learned/released about her.
As it stands now, this could be either a high school student or her grandma. The date-of-death range basically covers my whole life (I'm 36) and would include countless missing females. Plus, we don't know if she's white/black/Hispanic/Asian/etc...

I think it's supposed to be Peugeot not Peugot, but someone spelled it wrong. Peugeot is a watch company and if I recall, they were really big in the either the 80s or 90s. I always had Swatches.

Was Glen Rogers ever suspected in the redhead murders? The areas where killings took place were convenient for him. The red hair is a is puts a flag on him. He was abused by his mother who had red hair. The last 2 victims as Wikipedia states don't fit the time line, maybe not connected.

I'm from Leslie County, Ky, and my great grandpa on my mother's side mentioned this in passing years ago. He used to be a trucker at around this time hauling goods from factories in Mexico. I was about 11 at the time, and I was at his house watching Cold Case Files. He was in the living room with me sort of staring at the tv but not really watching it. Out of the blue, he says "that reminds me of a guy I used to know who drove trucks." He proceeds to tell me about how this dude used to sort of work with him and would pick up hitchhikers a lot. He said he'd usually let them go, but every now then he'd pick up a little red-head or strawberry blonde and kill them. I thought he was crazy talking, because he has a habit of doing that, but years later when I was in college I can across this series of murders and about had a heart attack. I know this is all baseless; I can't prove any of it and honestly he could be crazy and it's all coincidence. Still sends a shiver up my back, though. I believe this guy was a trucker.

This could be useful though! Sometimes it takes multiple witnesses to prove a story is true and not rumor. This could help point someone in the right direction!
