It was 1936 when 70-year-old Agafya Lykova's parents fled to the Siberian wilderness to escape religious persecution under Stalin. She was born nine years later. She's never lived in a community of people who aren't relatives.
Now, the loneliest woman in the world is completely alone. Her last sibling died in 1988 and a young helper has left, unable to cope with the isolation. She is being bothered by a bear - which she keeps at bay by beating a bucket - and hasn't managed to get enough firewood chopped in time for winter. She lights fires with flint and catches fish to supplement the vegetables she grows.
The army has stepped in to bring her suppliers, but Agafya won't consider leaving her hermit existence. Instead, told by soldiers she can reach millions of people by talking to media, she's appealing for a companion to share her cold and lonely life. If possible, she'd like that person to share her religious beliefs - she's an 'old believer'.
