"The first was to set a realistic trial date of Oct. 18. Welch’s attorney,* Tony Anderson, said that it is “a very complex case” that will cover an area from Maryland to Washington D.C., to South Carolina and possibly Delaware and all the way to Bedford County, covering a time period of 30 to 40 years.". . . . .

"Once the trial is completed Judge Updike said those bills would be unsealed and available for the public’s inspection.

A relative of the man charged in the 1975 disappearance of Sheila and Katherine Lyon has been found guilty of perjury but will not have to serve jail time.

From same article linked above:

... Patricia Jean Welch, also accused of lying to the grand jury, is slated to be tried on a perjury charge in August.
Arrested alongside Engleking in August were Amy Ann Welch Johnson, of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and Gladys Mae Stangee of Bedford. Stangee also is Richard Welch’s sister. Johnson is Richard Welch’s granddaughter.

The two women were charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice and in November were found guilty of the offense in Bedford General District Court. Both are appealing their convictions in Circuit Court, but no date has been set in those cases.

Lloyd Lee Welch Jr. is scheduled to go to trial on his two murder charges on Oct. 18.

HYATTSVILLE, Md. — A cousin of the man charged with the 1975 murders of Sheila and Katherine Lyon believes that investigators should be focusing on family members who live in rural Virginia where police believe the two sisters were taken and killed, and who might know more about what happened to the girls.

“I just think it’s a real big cover-up in Bedford,” Patricia Ann Welch, 49, told WTOP and NBC Washington, in a joint interview. “It may have started here in Montgomery County, but it ended up there.”

A year ago, Lloyd Lee Welch, Jr. was indicted in Bedford County, Virginia, on two counts of first degree felony murder for the deaths of Sheila, 12, and her sister Katherine, 10, Lyon. A few months before his trial is set to begin, his cousin Patricia Ann Welch spoke about the toll the ongoing investigation has taken on her family and she stressed that her own father, Richard Welch, was not responsible for the girls’ deaths.

..the proceeding would need to be pushed back to April of next year to give them time to prepare."

Woman Charged in Lyon Sisters Case Enters Alford Plea

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/l...isters-Case-Enters-Alford-Plea-390310061.html

"An Alford plea allows the defendant to maintain their innocence while acknowledging prosecutors have enough evidence to gain a conviction."...

"Patricia Welch received a suspended sentence of two years, a $1,000 fine and five years unsupervised good behavior, Bedford County Commonwealth Attorney Wes Nance told News4. ...Nance told the judge that prosecutors have phone records and audio recordings of Patricia Welch talking to witnesses and urging them not to cooperate with investigators."

"The defense also notes the Maryland investigators testified before a Bedford grand jury, which they claim breached the agreement with Welch. That grand jury indicted Welch on two counts of murder in 2015.

The Commonwealth says Welch is the one who breached the agreement, so his statements should be fair game. In court records, prosecutors say when talking to Welch, Maryland investigators were under the mistaken belief Welch had nothing to do with the disappearance of Lyon sisters."

Judge rules on what jury can hear in Lloyd Welch Jr. trial:

"BEDFORD (WSLS10)- A Bedford judge rules that the Commonwealth is bound by a Maryland immunity agreement in the Lloyd Welch Jr. case and denies defense motions to suppress some statements made by Welch to investigators...
The first issue pertains to an October 16, 2013, immunity letter between Welch and the Montgomery County, Maryland State’s Attorney. That office said it would not use Welch’s statements against him in criminal proceedings. The judge’s ruling means the prosecution will be bound to the letter, even though it was signed a year prior to Bedford County’s involvement in the case."

BEDFORD (WSLS 10) – Accused murderer Lloyd Welch is hanging his hope of freedom on a single sheet of paper he signed three years ago. That was the day he started talking to Maryland investigators about Katherine and Sheila Lyon.
