WORCESTER, Mass. — A family member identified the mother and daughter who died after they were found shot inside a bullet-riddled vehicle in Worcester on Tuesday, investigators announced Wednesday.

Officers responding to a report of shots fired in the area of Lisbon Street and Englewood Avenue just after 3 p.m. found two female gunshot victims inside a parked SUV, according to the Worcester Police Department.

The victims, who police identified as a mother and daughter, were rushed to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A family member identified the victims as Chasity Nuñez and her 11-year-old daughter, Zella.

The daughter's name is actually Zella Aria Milton (not Nunez).

Chasity worked at the MIT healthcare system according to her facebook and linkedin pages.

Chasity Nuñez, of Worcester, and her 11-year-old daughter, Zella, were the victims of Tuesday's shooting in the city's Columbus Park neighborhood.

The guy they're still looking for was charged with marijuana possession in 2017 and crack cocaine possession in 2019. I hope they get him soon.

He also has previous firearm charges:

Police said Belnavis does not have a license to carry, and “does have prior firearm charges in 2021.”

Notes:
The shooting was on Tuesday March 5, not March 6.
Both Karel Mangual (who has been arrested) and Dejan Belnavis were charged with
"armed assault with intend to murder".

This looks like a liquidation but I cannot imagine what the motive of such a brutal act could be.

Prosecutors say Mangual and Belnavis fled the scene of the murders on Englewood Avenue in the city’s Columbus Park neighborhood and got into a getaway car that was later recovered in Harford, Connecticut.

Belnavis and Mangual are no strangers to run-ins with law enforcement, according to Worcester District Court documents obtained by Boston 25 News. The two have faced a slew of violent charges that date back to 2014.

Belnavis has previously been charged with the following offenses:

  • Drug possession charge in 2023
  • Two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges in 2021 -- was found guilty of one count
  • License suspended in 2020
  • Breaking and entering charge in 2018
  • One count of strangulation/suffocation, one count of assault and battery on a family member charges in 2018 -- accused of punching girlfriend repeatedly, strangling her to the point where she almost passed out -- charges dismissed
  • License suspended, excessive speeding charges in 2019
  • Drug possession charges in 2019
  • Drug possession charge in 2016
  • Drug possession, unlicensed operation, and speeding charges in 2016
  • License suspended, failure to yield at an intersection charge in 2016
  • Drug possession, unlicensed operation charges in 2016
  • Uninsured motor vehicle charge, registration suspended in 2017
  • Resisting arrest charge in 2017 -- found guilty
  • Drug possession to distribute, conspiracy to violate drug law charges in 2017
  • Marijuana possession, drug possession, conspiracy to violate drug charges

Mangual has previously been charged with the following offenses:

  • Assault to murder charge in 2014 -- accused of sending a man to the hospital after firing multiple rounds at him -- dismissed
  • Assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle) charge in 2019 -- found guilty and identified by police as a gang member
  • Liquor possession under the age of 21 charge in 2014
Chastity Nuñez was a member of the Connecticut National Guard and received honors like the National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Army Achievement Medal.

She also served as a Patient Safety & Clinical Quality Program Coordinator at MIT Health since July 2023.

Zella was a student at Worcester Public Schools. The school district called her death “unimaginable” and a “terrible tragedy.”

Mangual is being held without bail and will reappear in court for a dangerousness hearing later this month.

Anyone with information on Belnavis’ whereabouts is urged to contact Worcester police.

An investigation into Chastity and Zella’s deaths remains ongoing.

The mother shot to death alongside her young daughter in a parked SUV in Worcester earlier this week was a decorated servicewoman who was “full of compassion”, the National Guard told Boston 25 Thursday.

Chasity Nuñez and her 11-year-old daughter, Zella, were shot and killed while sitting inside a parked SUV in the area of Lisbon Street and Englewood Avenue just after 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Nuñez received honors like the National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Army Achievement Medal since joining the service in 2020, National Guard spokesperson Major David Pytlik told Boston 25.

“Chasity was beloved by her fellow Soldiers in the 142nd Medical Company. Her wit, social nature and dedication to duty made her one of the best Soldiers in our unit,” Pytlik described. “I cannot begin to make sense of why this happened and why her family, friends, co-workers and fellow Soldiers have been robbed of her and Zella. What we can, and must do now, is support one another as we grieve, process this profound loss and honor their memory.”

“I’d describe Chasity as incredibly resilient, brilliantly intelligent, destined for success in her civilian and military careers, and more full of compassion than anyone I know,” Pytlik added.

Additionally, Nuñez worked in the MIT Health system as a Patient Safety & Clinical Quality Program Coordinator since July 2023.

“Chas was passionate about the health and wellbeing of the MIT community. She was beloved by the colleagues who worked closely with her, and her dedication to our patients was powerful and impactful. She will be deeply missed,” Cecilia Stuopis, MD, Chief Health Officer of MIT Health, said in a statement.

It’s paywalled. Can you give a short synopsis please?? TIA!

Authorities announced Dejan Dante Belnavis, the man wanted in the shooting deaths of Chasity Nunez and her 11-year-old daughter, Zella, in Worcester, has been taken into custody in California.

Law Enforcement sources say Belnavis was picked up by US Marshals in San Diego on Monday afternoon.

This is such a unbelievably senseless murder and so sad. I hope they throw the book at these perpetrators and they will never get free again. Can they also be federally charged?
