Delayed start to closing arguments due to late juror. “She’s going to take an Uber,” court officer says. Court in recess as we wait.
Closing arguments begin. Up first - attorney Steve Sack for the defense. He didn’t call any witnesses before resting his case.
Sack tells jury in closing arguments that he never said Teixeira didn’t kill Dr. Richard Field. “Because he did...but he did it in self-defense and that’s not murder.”
@DARollins is in the courtroom to listen to closing arguments in the Teixeira trial.
Sack’s closing arguments lining up with what Teixeira told police. He claimed Richard Field killed Lina Bolanos. Sack mentions domestic violence as the victims families shake their head.
Sack says his client was afraid and knew no one would believe him. Says when he was arrested, he was babbling about “he killed my wife” because he “fully believed” he was having a relationship with Lina Bolanos.
Sack says his client was honest with police. Even told them he stole from the couple after they were dead because he “got greedy.” But says he only stabbed Field once in self-defense.
Sack says none of Teixeiras fingerprints were found at the crime scene. And if he was wearing gloves when he stabbed Bolanos as many times as she was stabbed, there would be blood on them. There wasn’t any.
Sack ends by saying although Teixeira stole from penthouse A and killed Field in self-defense, he’s not guilty of these charges.
ADA John Pappas begins closing arguments for the prosecution.
Pappas says this is about “the real evidence in this case and the imagined story the defendant came up with.” Calls Teixeira’s version of what happened “absurd” and “ridiculous.”
“He is a person literally caught in the act.” Pappas says it wasn’t enough for Teixeira to kill the couple, he’s now trying to destroy their names with a “preposterous” story.
Pappas is using a monitor and playing surveillance video of the route Teixeira took to get to the couples’ building.
Pappas shows surveillance video of the defendant outside the building - “he’s lurking out front, lurking out back, waiting for his opportunity.”
Pappas is holding up the BB gun Teixeira allegedly used. “What would Lina Bolanos do with this pointed at her?”
An image of Bolanos’ jacket appears on the screen. It’s bound with duct tape. Pappas asks the jury if the defendant’s story is true - “How does it get like that?”
“This attack on Lina Bolanos happened immediately... and it had nothing to do with Richard Field,” says Pappas.
