Police allege that Emanuel Lopes, 20, threw a rock at Weymouth cop Michael Chesna, who dropped his gun. Lopes grabbed the officer's gun and shot him five times in the head and five times in the torso and legs. Lopes also allegedly fired three rounds into Vera Adams' home. The 77-year-old woman was killed.

A responding police officer then shot Lopes in the leg.

Man charged in deaths of Weymouth sergeant, bystander due in court

Emanuel Lopes was indicted earlier this month by a Norfolk County Grand Jury. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday (to be arraigned).

Lopes, 21, is facing 11 charges: two counts each of murder and armed assault with intent to murder involving a firearm; one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a rock; larceny of a firearm; carrying a firearm without a license card; use of a motor vehicle without authority; negligent driving; leaving the scene of a crash causing property damage; and malicious destruction of property.

Accused Weymouth cop killer deemed competent to stand trial

Lopes’s next hearing is on Jan. 31, when a judge will consider the release of information from the competency report and the state will argue for a buccal, or cheek, swab for DNA from Lopes.
