A preliminary hearing for the patricide case is set to begin in January right after the holidays and just before jury selection starts in the Bosma trial on January 18, 2016.

Justice John McMahon strongly advised Millard more than once to get a lawyer. Although he made clear that the decision was ultimately Millard’s, he said: “I haven’t seen a lot of first degree murder charges” where self-represented defendants succeed.

“I do think it’s in your best interests to get a lawyer.”

Labour dispute at Toronto prison delaying court proceeds, judges, lawyers say

Judges and lawyers say labour troubles at Toronto’s South Detention Centre are slowing down proceedings in several trials, including that of accused killer Dellen Millard.

The jail has been plagued by problems since opening in 2014, caused in part by an ongoing labour dispute between the provincial government and OPSEU, the union representing correctional officers.

Millard finally entered the court at around 12:30 p.m. on Monday -- nearly three hours after he was supposed to arrive.
“I actually started in transit at 6 a.m. this morning,” Millard to the judge. “I didn’t arrive here until 12.”
OPSEU denies that there was any delay in transporting Millard to the hearing.

0:38 ff: He came in alone, no family or friends were in the courthouse to watch his first appearance in this case

1:16 ff: Now throughout his first appearance, he was making several submissions himself for reading material, and outside externally supplied lunches while he's going to be staying at that centre.

@0:43 - "Remarkably, he actually looked pretty clean cut. He was sporting a braided ponytail on the right side of his head and he did get up to speak with the judge several times. He is very articulate and does not seem to be fazed by the numerous charges he is facing."

"Never before has it taken three assistant Crown attorneys to prosecute a homicide case in Hamilton.

The diverse team of Tony Leitch, Craig Fraser and Brett Moodie will set the precedent Jan. 18 when the high-profile Tim Bosma murder trial begins. The massive volume of evidence, the complexity of the case and the fact there are two accused may account for a trio of Crowns instead of the usual two.

Clairmont: As his accused killers face trial, please remember Tim Bosma

Tim would be 35 now.

He would be watching his little girl blow out six birthday candles. He would be celebrating wedding anniversaries with his soulmate, Sharlene, and enjoying their dream home in Ancaster. His parents, Hank and Mary, would brag about how well their doting son turned out.

That's how it ought to have been.
