Gun Traced To Doctor Anthony Garcia, Accused In Four Nebraska Deaths

That parity was detailed in an arrest affidavit unsealed Thursday in the case of Dr. Anthony Garcia, who is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and weapons counts in the May deaths, as well as the slayings in 2008.

Police soon discovered it wasn't just the stab wounds that linked the victims.

The slain doctor, Roger Brumback, was the chairman of the Creighton University School of Medicine's pathology department. The boy stabbed to death five years earlier in a nearby neighborhood was the son of a professor who worked closely with Brumback in the same department. That connection led police to research those associated with the department, uncovering another eye-opener – that Hunter and Brumback had fired Garcia from the pathology residence program for "unprofessional conduct" in 2001.

Why fired resident Anthony Garcia didn't emerge as suspect in 2008

Several names were discussed during that meeting in March 2008, about 10 days after the killings. But there's one name William Hunter doesn't recall raising: Anthony J. Garcia.

Yes, Hunter had played a significant role in firing Dr. Garcia from his medical residency in pathology at Creighton in 2001. But the resident had also left quietly, with no threats or subsequent personal contact of any kind. And it had all been seven long years ago. Hunter simply didn't consider him a likely suspect.

“Honestly, he wasn't on the radar screen,'' Hunter said in an exclusive interview last week. “I didn't think he had any animosity to me.''

Third CU doctor might have been another target

Just after 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 12 — the same day police believe Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife were killed — someone tried to break into the home of Dr. Chhanda Bewtra, a colleague of Brumback in the Creighton pathology department.

Bewtra, who was not home at the time, said police have never told her whether they think the incident was related to Anthony Garcia, or to the slayings of the Brumbacks and the two 2008 killings in the home of Creighton pathologist Dr. William Hunter.

But like Brumback and Hunter, Bewtra played a part in the 2001 firing of Garcia from his Creighton pathology residency.

Grace: Amid tragedy, doctors in Creighton pathology lab tried to stay focused

These pathologists, who are trained to be medical detectives, were nagged by their own questions in the unsolved murders: Who would do this? Why? And was anyone next?

Some answers came Monday and provided a measure of comfort, closure and shock.

The man charged with the murders had once worked among them in this same pathology lab. He had once won one of the residency spots in a program so competitive that up to 300 apply for just two to three openings in Creighton's four-year program. He had been terminated — a move so rare, Sharma couldn't remember another time it happened in her nearly 10 years there.

Being terminated would have been devastating, she said.

“Our training is stringent,” she said. “It takes time. It takes effort. It takes money.”

Yes, some medical residents wash out of their programs for various reasons. Maybe the specialty isn't the right fit, and advisers help them find another medical field.

But termination is different, Sharma says. Termination makes it hard to find another placement. Termination can destroy your career.

Attorneys: Close Dundee Murder Hearing

In their motion to close the preliminary hearing to the public and the media, the attorneys argue that release of information from the court hearing will impact Garcia's right to a fair trial.

They also argue that there is really no other remedy available other than closing the hearing.

Creighton slayings: Anthony J. Garcia wants closed court hearing

Douglas County Prosecutor Don Kleine said he doubts a judge would close any proceedings.

“We don't have secret hearings up at the courthouse here,” Kleine said.

Meanwhile, Douglas County Sheriff Tim Dunning announced Tuesday he plans to increase security at the county courthouse because of increased risk at the high profile hearing.

A photo ID will be required to enter the courtroom, and people won't be able to come in while the hearing is in session, he said in a press release.

He also said that there will be “a more focused” security presence at the courthouse.

Garcia is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in connection with some of the most high-profile crimes in recent Omaha history.

He's also charged with three counts of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and one count of use of a firearm to commit a felony.

Kleine has said he's considering asking for the death penalty in this case.

Creighton slayings: New details emerge; Garcia to stand trial on 4 murder charges

http://www.omaha.com/article/20130814/NEWS/130819514/1685

Anthony J. Garcia had hoped to woo a bad-boy loving stripper by telling her that he, too, was dangerous and had “killed a small boy and an old lady,” an Omaha police homicide detective testified today.

Douglas County Judge Darryl Lowe cited that testimony in his ruling that prosecutors have enough evidence to justify trying Garcia on four counts of first-degree murder..........

Creighton slayings: Garcia's Internet searches, DNA evidence help build case

Anthony Garcia's Internet searches were among the most damning evidence used to build the first-degree murder case against him, an Omaha police detective testified Wednesday.

.......................snip.....................

In a separate action Wednesday, lead prosecutor Kleine gave notice of the state's intent to prove three aggravating circumstances that might merit the death penalty in the Garcia case:

>> That the killings were heinous.

>> That there were multiple killings.

>> And that at least some of the killings were committed to conceal the identity of the killer.
