ORLANDO -- More transcripts of depositions were filed. One of the four added in the court file is of Dr. Madhavi Martin from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Dr. Martin explained LIBS -- Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. She describes it as making a fingerprint.

This technique has been around since the 1960s.

She was asked by Dr. Arpad Vass to see if she could find magnesium, calcium, sodium, or iron while analyzes carpet from inside Anthony's car.

This type of analysis to determine elements for decomposition has never been introduced in court before.

Anthony's defense team is fighting to keep it out.

Martin is listed along with Vass and Dr. Marcus Bain Wise as assisting in the analysis of air samples taken from Anthony's trunk.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Mason asked to add six additional witnesses. He said two of the witnesses are mental health professionals.

Prosecutors said they want the defense team to show why they should be allowed to add the late witnesses.

Casey Anthony attended the hearing, Baez did not.

"We're voluntarily striking," Mason said.

Mason said they would drop one name from the list of additional witnesses.

Prosecutors announced they will depose the two mental health experts on that list next week.
"The state is going to say she acted guilty -- she had a consciousness of her guilt," defense attorney Richard Hornsby said.

Ashton also announced that he would turn over a CD to the defense team of 236 photos he plans to use at trial. The images include some of Caylee Anthony's remains, which have been sealed by the court.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There was a very short hearing held Thursday in the case against Casey Anthony, as lawyers for both sides deal with some last-minute experts the defense wants to call in the upcoming murder trial.

Mason did not address his accusations during or after court. Other than cutting off Judge Perry at the beginning of the hearing, Mason did not address in any way his accusations that Judge Perry was "disingenuous" and flat-out wrong to allow jurors to hear Casey Anthony lie to investigators and to her family during phone calls and visits with them when she was in jail.

ORLANDO -- The FBI destroyed it, Casey Anthony's defense team wants to squash it, but the state thinks it's a link proving Anthony killed her daughter.

According to a report by Yuri Melich, the lead detective on the case, a FBI lab technician noticed residue on a piece of duct tape "in the perfect shape of a heart. The heart was not hand drawn and residue appeared to be consistent with the adhesive side of a heart shaped sticker."

Also, while searching the Anthony home, a sheet of stickers were found in Anthony's room.

The state wants to link these three pieces together during her murder trial in May, but the defense and the FBI lab technician said not so fast.

Casey Anthony hearing: Science debate returns to courtroom today
By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

8:16 a.m. EDT, April 1, 2011

The debate about what kind of scientific evidence will be allowed at Casey Anthony's murder trial will resume today in an Orange County courtroom.

Her defense attorneys are fighting to toss such evidence, calling it "junk science."

The defense, has its own forensic botanist, Dr. Jane Bock, who said some of the scene's plant growth suggests a period of one or two weeks — not several months. If the defense can create doubt or confusion about when the child's remains were placed at the site, it can also argue that Casey Anthony couldn't be responsible for that particular act.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Judge Perry wasted no time in putting both sides in their place Friday during a hearing .

The hearing concerns what evidence will be allowed at the murder trial.

Prosecutors accused defense attorney Baez of failing to disclose new testimony by a defense expert.

Perry expressed exasperation with Baez's failure to share the information he planned to use during the hearing.

Baez voluntarily withdrew an exhibit that the judge told him he would not have been allowed to use because he failed to tell prosecutor Jeff Ashton about it.

Ashton grew outraged at Baez, accusing him of a discovery rules violation.

"Clearly this is willful. Clearly this is deliberate," Ashton said.

Baez argued successfully.

Cindy Anthony, also took the stand and testified that she put fabric softener sheets into her daughter's car to mask a terrible smell. She admitted to Ashton that she said in her deposition she could not remember doing that.

Friday morning, Dr. Kenneth Furton, a chemistry professor from Florida International University, said Vass' science was not widely accepted in the scientific community.

Furton said the same chemicals found in decomposition or chloroform can also be found in common household products, or even food as common as "Velveeta cheese."

If that's true, that means the trash found in the back of the car could have influenced Vass' test results. The defense hopes to prove it may have been rotting pizza after all.

Late this afternoon, Dr. Barry Logan, a forensic toxicologist from NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, is testified.

Logan says the science used by Vass and others at Oak Ridge National Lab in this case have not been properly validated with "error rates." He said such error rates have become an expectation "for evidence offered in court." This is because the rates establish some measure of reliability of these new findings

Talking With … Scot Safon: Casey Anthony trial is 'gigantic' for HLN
Orlando Sentinel "Snip"
April 03, 2011

When it comes to TV coverage of the Casey Anthony trial, Scot Safon will be one of the most important figures determining what viewers see. He is executive vice president of HLN and oversees truTV's "In Session," which will provide pool coverage of the trial.

CFB: How big a deal is the Anthony trial for HLN?

It's a gigantic deal for us. It's a case that has been very important to our audiences since the early developments in the case. Nancy Grace has done a ton of coverage. It really strikes a chord with people who watch us. We get active audience feedback. It's true across the country. It's not a regional-interest story. It's about justice.
