Family seeks answers in Nevaeh's murder

The family of Nevaeh Buchanan say they will not rest until the killer of the 5-year-old child is brought to justice.

Nevaeh's father Shane Hinojosa said the recent birth of his daughter was bittersweet. "My new daughter was born and it was kind of hard for me to deal with that because she has some distinct features of Nevaeh," Mr. Hinojosa said.

Rev. Dale Hayford, who is a friend of the family issued an appeal to the killer to surrender. "There's going to be no peace in their heart or life until they deal with this; my door is open and I am here to pray for this person, I am praying for them daily," Rev Hayford said.

Number of area missing persons in the hundreds

It is hard to use a word like 'grateful' in the context of missing persons, but it's a word more than one detective in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan would feel comfortable with.

They are grateful cases like those of Neveah Buchanan, Cindy Sumner, and Jennifer Shively don't happen a lot.

The same goes for Monroe County in Southeast Michigan where missing person’s detectives are focusing all their efforts on finding five year old Neveah Buchanan's killer.

He says he'll keep doing his best to find his 130 missing people before any of them end up like Neveah Buchanan, Cindy Sumner, or Jennifer Shively.

Stories of the year: Nevaeh missing shocked community
last modified December 26. 2009 11:17PM
<snipped>
Nevaeh Buchanan went missing from the Charlotte Arms apartments on N. Macomb St. during Memorial Day weekend. A massive search that involved hundreds of county residents — some joining to literally walk through neighborhoods and acres of land calling her name — went unsuccessful. FBI specialists converged on the county and the Emergency Operations Center opened. Less than two weeks later, her body was found by fishermen along the banks of the River Raisin in a crude concrete grave.

In October, several family members, including Nevaeh's mother, Jennifer, met with The Evening News to speak out publicly in an effort to keep her name alive in people's memories and vent frustrations over no one being arrested for the crime.

Fundraisers were held in her memory and reward money was offered, but there have been no arrests made in the case that, going into 2010, remains unsolved.

MONROE MYSTERY: Nevaeh's killing
Posted: Dec. 27, 2009
<snipped>
Hundreds of people searched for her, borne by relentless local and national cable news coverage and the hideousness of someone snatching a 5-year-old from outside her mother's apartment on May 24 in Monroe.

And when two fishermen found the body of Nevaeh Buchanan 10 days later, the news grew more sickening.

Whoever killed her buried her in concrete, possibly while still alive, in a shallow grave next to the River Raisin in Raisinville Township.

Nevaeh's killer still walks free.

Family still seeks answers, closure in girl's slaying
13,000 tips later, grisly Nevaeh case remains unsolved after 7 months
Article published January 03, 2010

Sherry Buchanan said she hurts every day, but the holidays are among the hardest. She also is dreading Feb. 3, when her granddaughter would have turned 6 years old.

"I think about Nevaeh constantly. I just wish that she was here now," she said just days before Christmas. "I raised her from the first day she was born. I did everything with her."

Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said a special task force of local, state, and federal law enforcement continues to investigate and the crime remains a high priority.

"Investigators are still pursuing leads and following up on additional information received. The investigation is far from having reached a dead end," he said in a written statement.

Detectives assigned to the case last month distributed questions to residents, asking for written answers. The questions ask about their activities and whereabouts on the day Nevaeh went missing and whether they were the person responsible for the crime.

Diane Edwards said she and her family complied with the requests even though she had doubts about the questionnaire's usefulness.

"If we didn't fill it out, it would seem like we might have something to do with it," she said.

Mourners recall slain Monroe girl
Somber gathering marks Nevaeh's 6th birthday
Article published February 04, 2010
<snipped>
Nevaeh Buchanan would have turned 6 yesterday. Although the girl was killed last spring, she was fresh in the minds of mourners who gathered at her grave here to remember her on her birthday.

"I wish she was here so I could make her a big old birthday cake," said Diane Lawson, her great aunt, the anguish in her voice apparent.

Instead, she put balloons on Nevaeh's grave that already was beautifully bedecked with a blanket of greenery and pink flowers. The heart on the balloon read "I love you."

Shaun Lawson, Nevaeh's cousin, said he organized the brief service in St. Joseph Cemetery to keep memory of the girl alive and as a reminder that her killer has not been found.

The case remains unsolved. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has released no new details since the release of the autopsy, which showed the little girl may have been buried alive.

As a cold wind blew across the cemetery, Nevaeh's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, tied a Happy Birthday balloon to the gravestone.

The search for Nevaeh Buchanan
Monday, February 15, 2010
<snipped>
Almost a year and 13,000 tips later, no killer has been charged with the child's death

It's the most high-profile murder case in our area in years. Nevaeh Buchanan, 5, was taken from her home and buried alive. It happened last summer, but to this day, the crime remains unsolved. Her name was Nevaeh-- heaven spelled backward-- and on her tombstone, she's called "Monroe's Little Angel."

Diana Lawson is Nevaeh's great-aunt. She still lives in the Charlotte Arms apartment building, across the hall from where Nevaeh was last seen. That was May 24 of last year.

A large, wooden cross now stands along the riverbank, marking the site where investigators recovered Nevaeh's body. It's here you'll also find signs offering a $20,000 reward to whomever can help solve this mystery.

Two weeks ago would have marked Nevaeh's sixth birthday. A small crowd gathered to remember the girl, including Nevaeh's mother, Jennifer Buchanan. Jennifer did not speak to the media.

She and Nevaeh's grandmother, who was the girl's legal guardian, have since moved out of Charlotte Arms. Meantime, Nevaeh's aunt says she still contacts investigators, asking for updates.

We were all set to talk with a sergeant about the investigation and where it stands, when the sheriff of Monroe County pulled the plug. At this point, we are told there will be no on-camera interviews about the Nevaeh Buchanan case.

As for Nevaeh's great-aunt, she wonders how much detectives know and how much she doesn't. "They're not talking much about anything. I don't know if they've got anything, any clues." That leaves her, and many others, to question: what led up to the killing of Monroe's little angel? Who took the young life of Nevaeh Buchanan? And perhaps the most nagging question of all -- Why?

Nevaeh reward poster campaign
Search continues for Neveah's killer

A renewed effort is underway to help catch whoever killed 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan in May 2009 in Monroe, Mich. Members are hoping to renew interest in the case and help heal a community who wants to see this little girl's killer caught. The reward poster campaign will be this coming Monday 6-9 p.m. at the Moose Lodge Family Center on Macomb Street. A prayer service will conclude the event.

Reverend Dale Hayford of Cross Walk Community Church was searching an area behind an abandoned warehouse when he got word that the body of Nevaeh had been found.

She was covered in quickcrete, buried alive, and left at the bank of the River Raisin in Raisinville Township. "I was searching by myself that day about 4 o'clock, 5 o'clock, and the phone call came across that they had found a body on the River Raisin," Rev. Hayford said.

'The community is still hurting," he said. "They want an answer. They want to find out what has happened. They are in pain and the community is still grieving over this."

Two rewards are being offered for the arrest of Nevaeh's killer. There is a $1,000 reward from Crimestoppers of Michigan and $20,000 reward from the FBI. "We're hoping this person will turn himself in," Rev. Hayford said. "In order to find peace in their heart they are going to have to do that."

If you think you know anything at all about the abduction and murder of Nevaeh Buchanan you asked to call the Nevaeh Task Force at 734-457-6713.

FBI Offering $20,000 Reward, Group Circulating New Fliers, Grandmother Still Suspicious

POSTED: Monday, April 26, 2010

Nevaeh's grandmother Sherry Buchanan attended the vigil and is still suspicious about the entire ordeal.

Amid prayers and the well wishes of others, Sherry told Local 4 that her daughter, Nevaeh's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, is no longer being looked at by police. “They have talked to me many times and they have told me that they have cleared her," Buchanan said.

But she has some suspicions on the involvement of others. Her gut tells her that George Kennedy, her daughter’s boyfriend at the time, was probably involved. “In my heart, George treated that baby like it was his own kid…and I still feel to this day that he had something to do with it," Buchanan said.

Nevaeh’s mother, Jennifer Buchanan, attended the vigil, but didn’t want to talk.

Family and friends hold vigil for Nevaeh

Police aren't commenting on Nevaeh's case. They still have not named a suspect in the five-year-olds death. In the days after she went missing back in May last year, a person of interest surfaced but no charges were filed. Even Nevaeh's mother Jennifer faced scrutiny so much so that she didn't want to go to last night's event; but she eventually changed her mind.

Nevaeh's grandmother Sherry Buchanan says Jennifer "just wants to be left alone right now. The detectives and everybody have cleared her. It's hard for her to get out because people have ridiculed her a lot and she didn't have anything to do with this."
