The parents of the accused Oxford High School shooter are once again seeking to get the case against them thrown out, this time appealing to the Michigan Supreme Court.

The attorneys for James and Jennifer Crumbley have filed appeals with the state supreme court in an effort to strike down the charges against the parents in connection with the Nov. 30, 2021 mass shooting.

The Crumbleys are each facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter after four students were killed -- and seven other people were injured -- when their son allegedly opened fire during school hours. Prosecutors accuse the parents of gross negligence, saying they neglected their son and his deteriorating mental state and purchased a firearm for him, which he then used to terrorize the high school.

Defense attorneys for the Crumbley parents continue to argue that prosecutors cannot legally draw a connection between the parents and the involuntary manslaughter charges against them...

The parents of accused Oxford High shooter Ethan Crumbley continued their pursuit for a halt to their case and a block on some evidence by appealing to the Michigan Supreme Court Monday.

The Michigan Court of Appeals previously rejected the appeal filed by the attorneys for James and Jennifer Crumbley that requested a stay on their case and for some evidence, including their son’s journals and text messages, be considered inadmissible in the case against them in Oakland Circuit Court...

How many times are they able to appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court? Unlimited? Does filing multiple appeals buy them time?

I think that's the purpose of all the appeals. Delay. Delay. Delay. I don't think either attorney is doing their due diligence for these clients. JMO

Pontiac — An Oakland Circuit judge denied defense attorneys’ request to have bonds modified for the parents of the accused Oxford High shooter, who are facing charges related to the Nov. 30 shooting.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, parents of accused shooter Ethan Crumbley, are charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of four Oxford High teenagers killed in the shooting: Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; Hana St. Juliana, 14; and Justin Shilling, 17.

The Crumbleys have been described by prosecutors as grossly negligent in their care of their son, 15 at the time of the incident, and who reportedly asked them to provide him with psychiatric counseling because he was hearing voices and having hallucinations. Investigators say they purchased him a handgun as an early Christmas present and took him to a range to learn how to fire the weapon, later used to kill four and wound seven others including a teacher...

Too bad the Crumbleys weren't as persistent in getting their son the help he needed as they are about getting their bonds reduced or having the case against them tossed out. JMO

I think the judge is going to run out of patience with the Crumbleys very soon. I don't think this case is going away, no matter how much they wish it would.

Curious about how long they will be able to afford their private attorneys. Ethan is using a public defender IIRC.

Pontiac — An Oakland Circuit Court judge handling the trial of the parents of the accused Oxford High School shooter is allowing Oakland Prosecutor Karen McDonald to share information with those affected by the shooting but urged her to be cautious.

In a series of orders issued without a court hearing, Judge Cheryl Matthews again cautioned the prosecutor’s office about pretrial statements but stopped short of ordering them to stop emailing information to 1,800 registered victims; dismissed a prosecution witness named after a witness deadline had passed; and reminded attorneys of their duties to provide detailed information about any expert witnesses they planned to call at trial.

The orders are in response to concerns by defense attorneys for James and Jennifer Crumbley who asked Matthews to restrict or limit pretrial statements about the case and that McDonald's statements possibly violate the judge’s prior instructions...

OXFORD, Mich. – A judge has ruled not to limit which Oxford High School victims can receive information from the court during the case for the suspected shooter’s parents.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of the suspected Oxford High School shooter, tried to restrict who could receive updates about court proceedings.

The defense hoped a judge would limit sharing information to only the families whose children died in the shooting, and that left other families outraged. The judge granted and denied parts of their motion...

“Though the Court does not know the exact number of victims in this case, the Court agrees with the Prosecution that there are certainly far more than four. . . . The Court is reluctant to restrict the Prosecution’s dissemination of important factual information to victims. However, the Prosecutor’s Office should reasonably have known that an email sent to close to two thousand registered victims could be disseminated to the media.”

Pontiac — Oxford High School shooting suspect Ethan Crumbley was back in court virtually Thursday for a placement hearing as required by law every 30 days because of his age and being held in an adult facility.

Crumbley, 16, of Oxford is facing 24 felony charges, and is accused of killing four fellow students at the school and wounding six others and a teacher. He is facing possible life in prison if convicted...

A teenager accused of killing four fellow students and injuring more at a Michigan high school is expected to plead guilty next week, authorities said Friday.

Ethan Crumbley had created images of violence during a classroom assignment last November, but his parents declined to send him home after school officials asked them to do so from Oxford High School in Metro Detroit. He is accused of pulling out a gun a few hours later and committing a mass shooting.

“We can confirm that the shooter is expected to plead guilty to all 24 charges, including terrorism and the prosecutor has notified the victims,” said David Williams, chief assistant prosecutor in Oakland County.

Crumbley, 16, is due in court Monday. A message seeking comment was left for his lawyers...

The teen charged in the deadly shooting at Oxford High School last fall is expected to plead guilty to multiple felony charges, including murder and terrorism.

Ethan Crumbley, the teen who was charged as an adult in the shooting death of four of his fellow classmates at Oxford High School in Nov. 2021, is expected to plead guilty to all 24 charges on Monday, according to Oakland County chief assistant prosecutor David Williams.

It would be the first time a school shooter was convicted of terrorism. A court hearing is expected to take place on Monday morning. Prosecutors did not offer any plea agreement or reduction in charges...

Thanks for the links, @BetteDavisEyes!

I'm surprised, but I guess I'm not. It's not as if he can say it wasn't him, but I thought the chances of a mental health defense were good.

I also wonder how this impacts his potential testimony at his parent's trial.

I just said this to DH: How will Ethan's guilty plea affect his parents' trial? Will he throw them under the bus?

Could he refuse to testify? Does any immunity exist due to their relationship? I do feel certain his parents will not plea out unless it comes with no further jail time.

Maybe the guilty plea will spare EC life in prison, and he would be sent to a psychiatric facility for treatment instead. We have never learned the results of his psychological/psychiatric evaluation. JMO

I hope he receives mental health treatment in addition to a lifetime of incarceration. The isolation he has been held in will have possibly further deteriorated his mental state.

If only another caring adult had intervened....now, nothing can mitigate the horror of his crimes except prevention of the opportunity to kill again.

Is there more than one type of guilty plea? Is this a special plea deal?

EC is very young. While his crimes are despicable, I think some leniency might be considered. Perhaps that is part of the plea agreement. EC might have agreed to plead guilty to all charges in exchange for psychiatric treatment and a more lenient sentence. There's no DP in MIchigan, so LWOP is the maximum sentence. JMO

Nothing yet about the terms of the plea agreement. Maybe more after the hearing next week during which EC is expected to plead guilty to 24 charges.

I am surprised, I felt like he was looking forward to the notoriety he would of gotten during trial. I do hope he throws his parents under the bus. I feel strongly this would have never happened if they had been better parents. Oxford is a sister school to our community and I look forward to seeing justice served so families can fins some closure.
